I don't know why i had problems with IrDA. I just had to place the handy better, then it worked out-of-the box: "flexmem -l"
So if you are interested, try the packages at http://people.debian.org/~erich/ - and consider maintaining them, it probably is gonna be few work. I don't have a handy to test them myself. Greetings, Erich
