Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2002-06-16 Severity: wishlist * Package name : cernlib Version : 2002.04.26 Upstream Author : CERN <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> * URL : http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/asd/cernlib/ * License : GPL (but see below) Description : Suite of physics data analysis tools and libraries
Cernlib is a suite of data analysis tools and libraries created for use in physics experiments, but also with applications to other fields such as the biological sciences. The best-known of these tools are PAW, the Physics Analysis Workstation, and Geant 3.21, a particle detector simulation tool. ---------------- Some notes: The original source code only permitted the use of static libraries (at least on Linux); put everything in /cern/<someversion>; and was one giant conglomeration of stuff. I've put in a lot of work to make the code create shared libraries, conform to the FHS, and create a number of different Debian packages for people who only want one or two pieces of Cernlib. Possible licensing issue: Although CERN says that Cernlib is GPLed (see http://wwwinfo.cern.ch/asd/cernlib/conditions.html ), some of the code contains licensing terms incompatible with the GPL, and I don't know if those authors ever signed over their work to CERN. I've tried emailing upstream about the issue, but no response in about a month. If I can't get a response, I suppose the only solution is to remove the offending code (it's the optional FLUKA routines). Many thanks to Bas Zoetekouw, who has agreed to sponsor me for these packages.
