Yes. Now, we have ruby and ruby1.7, but we don't see any problem.

Anyway, I think it's time to have debian-ruby@lists.debian.org
to discuss ruby related issues in detail.

Ruby 1.6 is not equal to Ruby 1.8. Users of Ruby should be able to
choose from Ruby 1.6 and 1.8.

I think that upgrading to 1.8 from 1.6 should not do automatically.

Yes. Please see Bug#181192.

This makes me feel a bit uneasy, so I'm asking the following questions:

Is there some kind of transition plan ?
Is ruby1.8 co-installable with ruby1.6 ?

(because there always seem to be a lot of trouble with
perl / python transitions, that ruby may also have similar problems)

Package: wnpp
Severity wishlist

Ruby is the interpreted scripting language for quick and easy
object-oriented programming. It has many features to process text
files and to do system management tasks (as in perl). It is simple,
straight-forward, and extensible.

Ruby 1.8 is next stable version of Ruby. (Current stable version is
1.6.x.) ruby1.8 package provides the version of Ruby.
