I was wondering about the big difference to just using pam_mkhomedir
and/or using autofs.

Yeah, I was just looking for a general solution which does not need PAM enabled 
daemons.
For instance I did not find a decent way to use exim and pam_mkhomedir...
I think the same is true for all smtp servers, anyway.
