Severity: wishlist

* Package name: eaccelerator
  Version : 0.9.5~rc1
  Upstream Author : Name <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.eaccelerator.net/
* License : GPL V2
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : PHP opcode cacher and compilation optimizer

 eAccelerator is a free open-source PHP accelerator, optimizer, encoder
 and dynamic content cache. It increases the performance of PHP scripts
 by caching them in their compiled state, so that the overhead of
 compiling is almost completely eliminated. It also optimizes scripts to
 speed up their execution. eAccelerator typically reduces server load and
 increases the speed of your PHP code by 1-10 times.

Have you checked out these threads?

http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/05/msg00681.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2005/05/msg00148.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2005/09/msg00440.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/11/msg00078.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2005/01/msg00130.html

Basically, I tried to package this more than a year ago and was
basically not able to finish. So, unless the legal issues have been
resolved, this package will likely not be possible. The root of the
problem is that the GPL is not compatible with the PHP license. There
is no way around it, other than a clean rewrite of eacclerator by people
who have not seen the mmchache-derived code.

Regards,

-Roberto

hmm, right. the thing is, the code has been rewriten for the most part
of it, so they are not tied with the turck-mmcache copyright holders
anymore (afaict). so maybe it's possible to discuss it with upstream.

so basically, what has to be done? they must just explain that they
allow anyone to build their GPL software against php, is that it ?

the situations changed in the sense that we are not tied because of the
past anymore.

here is the link that explains that:
http://archive.eaccelerator.net/OldNews

and that has been achieved since, if I'm correct. so if this is just a
matter of exception to be done to the GPL, I'm really sure we can work
on it nicely.

The CVS seems to tell a quite different story.

Kind regards

If either a relicensing or an exception can be gained, then yes, it
should be resolvable. BTW, I am hoping that this succeeds since I use
this package personally and I would like to see it officially in Debian.
If you are interested I can provide you with the source package that I
created so that you are not reinventing the wheel.

-Roberto
