Are you sure about that? I was able to build mol with module-assistent
back in the days, has that seriously changed?

I guess part of the missing interest in MOL is the lack of support for
OSX 10.5 - it only supports it up to 10.4. I only found out about this
after I did finish the upgrade process about two years ago, and since
didn't notice any progress on these grounds.

Sorry to see it go nevertheless. Was fun.

Ah, right - that part. Was involved back then in the discussions to get
it applied - so this isn't an issue for within Debian. If we get mol
removed we might though want to tell the kernel team that they can feel
free to remove that patch again if they feel like it.

 So long,

AFAIK it's a small patch to export handle_mm_fault() to modules. Here's
the corresponding Debian bug report:

Alexander Graf posted some patches in March that let MOL run on top of
the KVM (see here:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=1267872281-25512-1-git-send-email-agraf%40suse.de
 )
At least that makes it possible to use MOL on PPC64 machines.
Also Alexander Graf was added to the list of project developers a week
ago.

On the other side I still use a self-compiled MOL version on my AmigaOne
PPC machines (self-compiled because the AmigaOne needs a special MOL version,
selected by a compile option - however I guess that could be
made run-time selectable).
So I would really like to see further support for MOL in Debian, but
I'm afraid I lack the knowledge (in software packaging) and time to
do this. Well, I hope MOL will return to Debian as soon as it fully
supports KVM on PPC64 and PPC32 machines.

best regards,

Gerhard

Me too.

A big problem is that MOL does require a patched kernel, i.e. the module
can't be built without patching the kernel itself. There was some work
upstream to get MOL into the mainline kernel, but it seems to have died.
Maybe Greg Kroah-Hartman would help, but I think the interest in MOL is
near zero.

Hence, I second the request to orphan MOL and remove it from Debian.

Bye, Jörg.

2010-08-06 Thread Gaudenz Steinlin
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

Hi

As I no longer use Mac-on-Linux for myself and I no longer regularly use
my powerpc machine I'm orphaning mol.

Formally mol is team maintained by the MOL Packaging Team, but beside
very few one time contributions no one other than me ever did any
packaging work since the team was created.

If noone steps up to take over the maintenance of MOL in the next week,
I will send removal requests to ftpmaster for mol and the related
driver packages.

Anyone willing to take over the maintenance of MOL should be willing to
take mol and the driver packages. Without these mol is basically
useless. The MOL kernel module currently does not build against the
current Debian kernel. And MOL does not run the latest versions of Mac
OS X. MOL upstream is mostly inactive.

Even if I request removal the subversion archive will stay on alioth if
someone wants to reupload it later.

Gaudenz
