Okay, I don't get it, why? We put stuff in News/ only after debian-announce
or debian-news posts, and I don't recall one for this.

Actually, I didn't want to do this exactly the same as before, I wanted to
make separate web pages for some things, but I didn't commit it in CVS yet.
(The #new-inst anchor is particularly annoying.)

I would recommend the less diligent translators that they don't update this
stuff just yet :)

The Norwegian translation

2001-11-22 Thread peter karlsson
Hi!

The Norwegian translation is again lagging behind, and this time I have
not been able to get in contact with the official translators (none
answered my last e-mail). With my limited Norwegian skills, I can do
some maintenance, but when pages go too out of sync, I will simply
remove them. Keeping them is probably not a good idea, and besides,
most of those pages are available in Danish and Swedish anyway,
languages that should be good alternatives for speakers of any of the
Norwegian languages.

If someone who actually has [one of the forms of] Norwegian as their
mother tounge wants to take over, I'd say just step forward and take
over. It's a good translation, and it would be sad to see it disappear
completely.

The Norwegian translation is again lagging behind,

... not the only one, to be honest. The following I'm eying for quite
some time now and try to bug with personal mails:

Language Translations Up to date OutdatedNot translated
Chinese (zh-cn) 69 (6%) 30 (3%) 39 (3%) 1004 (94%)
Hungarian (hu)31 (3%) 13 (1%) 18 (2%) 1042 (97%)
Korean (ko) 113 (11%) 12 (1%) 101 (10%)960 (89%)
Russian (ru) 72 (7%) 24 (2%) 48 (5%) 1001 (93%)

There are some other translations who have quite some outdated files,
but those bug me most Sometimes it seems that Korean tranlators
offer new translated files but don't care for them anylonger.

There are two more translations who currenly raised my attention but I
wouldn't bug them at the current moment.

Is it a must to read this list, at least for the translation
coordinators? I would think so, but somehow I doub that

and this time I have not been able to get in contact with the official
translators (none answered my last e-mail). With my limited Norwegian
skills, I can do some maintenance, but when pages go too out of sync,
 I will simply remove them.

Well, I sugguested that a while ago when I was truly annoyed by the
vast amount of outdated japanese files. If you remember I sugguested
the same back in that day. Jordi and Javier convinced me that it *is* a
good idea to keep even outdated files. Please read
http://lists.debian.org/debian-www/2001/debian-www-200109/msg00139.html
and the followup from Javier - I hope it can convince you, too.

Keeping them is probably not a good idea, and besides,

As said above, I like to disagree, and I guess Javier and Jordi still
do, too.

most of those pages are available in Danish and Swedish anyway,
languages that should be good alternatives for speakers of any of the
 Norwegian languages.

Well - I don't know exactly how much those languages differ but it
still might be useful.

If someone who actually has [one of the forms of] Norwegian as their
mother tounge wants to take over, I'd say just step forward and take
over. It's a good translation, and it would be sad to see it disappear
 completely.

That would of course be best and truly appreciated :)

 So long,
Alfie

Hmmm. Sorry if I jumped ahead a bit. I'd just like a place people can
go to find the woody installer, there's no link in the website now,
but we're recommending it very often.

don't think so Philpe, we, the brazillian team, control the pt translation
on Debian pages, maybe we'll have to split it on pt and pt-br some day...

Perhaps it would be more useful if wml had a mode where it barfed about
 missing tags.

Here is some material. It will only work when there is no newline embedded
in translated text.

The idea is very similar to the one used for countries: generate a template
from language_names.wml, which is read by this file. Because of this loop,
special care must be taken to ensure that file is generated before used.
A target has been inserted into Makefile.common, but IIRC previous similar
change with countries.wml did break nm.debian.org, so the 3language_names.def
script could be put on klecker under /org/www.debian.org/cron/daily_updates
to avoid such problems.

After applying patch and creating language_names.def, the game can start.
When you want to test this feature, simply add
   #use wml::debian::language_names
at top of file, and s/define-tag/define-tag-sliced/g
It seems to work quite well with english/Bugs/pkgreport-opts.inc, but please
test before making intensive use of this toy. In particular, Chinese variants
may cause trouble.
