Bug#123587: opensource.org not mentioned on /intro/free

2001-12-12 Thread Grant Bowman
Package: www.debian.org

On the page http://www.debian.org/intro/free there is no mention of
www.opensource.org. This clearly should be added even if it's not
a featured site because I think most Linux people use this site as a
reference when talking with those less knowledgable.

Thanks,

(also nm.debian.org and search.debian.org but they're a bit fiddly to

Technically yes I know this is possible because I have something
happening with each commit on a cvs'ed website at work.
But I would probably overload klecker or you'd get wierdness if, say,
you and I cvs commited within a minute of each other.

I agree, the two sections about CDs should be together. It would probably be
best if we had www.debian.org/CD/vendors and www.d.o/CD/images and then have
http://cdimage.d.o/ redirect to the latter. This would greatly simplify
translations, if anything. The image files would stay on cdimage.d.o, of
course, just the general information HTMLs would be with the rest.

Note also that /CD/images doesn't have to match the visual design of the
rest of www.d.o.

(Note also that we can make symlinks /cd, /CDs, /cds etc for those who can't
remember the exact form :) we do this for /international and /mirror already)

Maybe it wouldn't _overload_ it, but it sure wouldn't make life easy on it.

And BTW if someone touches the core templates several times within 4-6
hours, you know what happens...

I did this for releases/woody/ already. I can do it for releases/potato/,
too. I'll have to change the links to releases/stable/#new-inst for woody
anyway, so why not start now.

Yeah, unless they read the start of pretty much every section up to the
right one, about release notes. This would be fixed with the above change,
too.

There's one other problem -- the ports pages differ among each other, as
some have specific user-level data on them, and some don't.

Even better would be to have permanent redirects for these (if that's
possible with the mirroring structure we have). Symlink creates distinct
URLs that require extra bandwidth since the recipient don't know that they
are the same.

I'd rather see it wasn't changed until woody's release. Wise from the
potato release, we could fix all these links on a branch, and update all the
translations on that branch, and then merge back when the release happens.
Or, even, branch off the potato stuff and have woody on the trunk - that's
probably a better idea. Then we only need to switch to the trunk when woody
goes live, and everything will be there by magic.

BTW. 6 FIM ~ 1 EUR so there is software worth "thousands of

I originally had "hundreds of kronor" in my Swedish translation (the
original says "a hundred dollar"). Now I just say "cost hundreds", which of
course differs a bit in value if you're counting kronor, mark or euros...

Feedback for Craig Small on misc/merchandise:

2001-12-12 Thread Jeff Albro

Feedback for Craig Small on misc/merchandise:

This page is easy to read, easy to scan, and accomplishes its mission.
It's great! All I have for you is a few nitpicky improvements.

I don't believe you need the horizontal rules to separate the different
vendors. The paragraph grouping clearly indicates what goes with what.

I recommend a few wording changes on the product lists and possibly
adding notes on profit shareing for Debian:

(Notes: are my comments and aren't meant for the web page without
editing)

CopyLeft
URL: (just search for Debian)
Products: T-shirts, polo shirts, hats, frisbees, and stickers

(Note: CopyLeft posts how much is donated to Debian with each purchase, I
think you might want to mention this, assuming Debian has been "shown the
money")

(Note: really cool ultimate-weight frisbees too! Gimme!)

CafePress
URL:
Products: T-shirts, hats, mugs, mouse pads, and other articles of clothing

(Note: it looks like some of the money might go to Debian according to the
business model, but I'm not so sure... anybody know the background here?)

ThinkGeek
URL: (just search for Debian)
Products: golf shirts

(Note: no mention of donating to Debian)

If we can resolve the donation questions with Cafe Press and ThinkGeek I
think we should post it clearly. Craig - Do you want me to do the
research for that? Let's guide people to those who treat Debian the best!

Agreed, except that I think www.debian.org/CD/ should be an
introductory page like the one I put up at cdimage/~atterer, which
contains links to the other pages.

This sounds like a good idea, I quite like it! Having the content
available on cvs.debian.org makes it easily accessible to the various
groups of people who might want to change something (CD creators, boot
floppies team, translators...).

What do you think, Phil?

Thanks for saying this :) However, even if it doesn't have the same
design initially, this should certainly be an important goal. Site
design changing "in the middle of a site" is usually not acceptable.

Hm, but OTOH currently we're just wasting our sponsors' HD space,
because the official ISO mirror list is *REALLY* hard to find. (Just
try and see if you can find it!)

The *links* should be easy to find. CD mirror admins can always set up
bandwidth throttling if their mirror becomes overloaded...

But IMNSHO obscuring the links is really the wrong approach!
Information on a web site should not try to "guide" a visitor because
we "know better" than him; everything should be described so that the
*visitor* can decide what to do and get to the desired information
with the minimum number of clicks. Any "you want to do this and this,
believe me" will annoy a great many visitors.

No, you see, there will be no switchover -- links to

Hi,

I am a maintainer, about to sign a key for a prospective maintainer,
and I needed a refresher on that procedure. There is a lovely recipe
on debian's page

http://www.debian.org/events/keysigning

but there is no direct link to it from the first place that I looked,
namely step 2 of the new maintainer process

I think it would be good to link from there, and probably
also from the overview page

e.g. as a new item on the list "The following pages are for Debian
developers interested in participating".

I hope this message finds its way to the person responsible

Done. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've been doing alot of thinking about this, especially in light of the
information on http://cdimage.debian.org/~atterer/ and I think that there
is a solution that will help Debian's mirrors as well as fill the need for
user ease and simplicity.

Specifically:

"Install directly from the network. Are you sure you really need the CDs?
You can download only a minimal bootable CD image (or a couple of floppy
disc images) containing the installation system. Provided your computer
has an internet connection, the rest of the Debian distribution can be
downloaded if and when needed during installation. "

I think this is great! It appears to be the best of all possible worlds:

* Low bandwidth hit Saves time for the user (they can burn the cd quicker)

* Installs up to date programs immediately Prepared correctly should
"feel" almost identical to a regular installation.

* Doesn't require additional learning or work form the user such as using
a "build your own" cd program.

* Introduces a new user to the wonders of apt.

HOWEVER, it would appear that these CD images for a "boot CD then yank
from network" install are beta and not fully supported. If this was fixed
it would seem to be THE way to push users who had a network connection
from their new Debian box.

On the page http://www.debian.org/intro/free there is no mention of
www.opensource.org. This clearly should be added even if it's not
a featured site because I think most Linux people use this site as a
reference when talking with those less knowledgable.

Hi,

steps (a) to (c) are done under webwml/english/.
When proposing this transition, I did not realize that current links to PO
files and Debconf templates would be broken due to adoption of a pool
hierarchy.
In order to fix this problem, I would now prefer to exchange (d) and (e),
i.e. build English files ASAP, and committed files accordingly.

So English files will be installed during next build.
All international/Makefile have been synced with English, except for
danish french german korean swedish
directories, because these languages must first migrate their l10n
directory to the new scheme (which is quite easy, I did it for French).
Translators of these languages, I will let this work into your hands,
and when this is done, remember to add l10n again into international/Makefile.

Last, if build runs fine, someone should remove old files to prevent
problems with content negociation:
cd /org/www.debian.org/debian.org/international/l10n
rm po-* templates-* team-* l10n* i18n*
and also remove outdated index files.
Not sure I will have time (and rights) to do it myself.
