Debian Installation ISO DVD Image Files

2006-05-31 Thread Robert J. A. Fernandes.

Dear Sir,

I have downloaded DVD ISO Images files from this below
location: -

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/3.1_r2/i386/iso-dvd/

in this section the file size its shows
4.4G for debian-31r2-i386-binary-1, but when I am downloading it give me 372MB
and for the another file debian-31r2-i386-binary-2 it shows 4.1G but when I
downloads it gives me 127MB.

So is this file ok or has to be correct 4
GB? I have doubt just because of this sizes. And is it according to above
MBs then even I can burn on normal 700MB CDs right? So
whats the meaning of DVD ISO Files? I didnt get?

Please help me.

Regards,

Robert

2006-05-31 Thread Robert J. A. Fernandes.
Hi Mihira,

Thank you very much for your email.

But my problem is when I download the DVD ISO Files it showing me only
372 MB for 1st ISO and 2nd ISO it's showing me 127MB is this right size.
That's what I want to confirm with you.

IS that the same size of the both ISO files what I have downloaded, even
I tried 2-3 times again again it's the same size I think no problem
in my internet downloads, its even fast download.

I think I should burn these ISO files on DVD's then I should try
install right?

Eagerly waiting for your reply.

Regards,

Robert

Better check your internet connection. Most likely yor downloading timed

out and left you with a partial download. Use the check sum given in the

site to see if you have the complete file.

Wrong. You cannot burn a DVD image on a CD. it wont work.

So what's the meaning of DVD ISO Files? I
 didn't get?
These are image files of the DVD. you create a DVD using this ISO file.

the site provides Checksums for all the ISOs it hass. Please use those
check sums against the checksums of the files you have downloaded.
IF the checksums are the same then you can use the downloaded file.
However, since you say your file is mere 372 MB when it should be 4.4
GIGs, I highly doubt that you have the full iso.

what is the speed of your net connection ? What is your Download agent ?

if its Internet Explorer then I'm pretty sure you have a corrupt
download file. Use a download manager and download the ISO files again.

I think I should burn these ISO files on DVD's then I should try

withiut verifying the checksums, do NOT burn the ISOs as you're likely
to waste good DVDs over them.

Verify the downloads first.

No. You are trying to download them with IE or something, right? You
need
some software that correctly address the fact that you are downloading a
*large* file, like curl or wget (I do not know if Firefox will do the trick).
The problem is that your software hasn't got large file support, and it sees
anything of '4 GB + some MB' as being only 'some MB' (ignoring the first 4
GB). Your symptoms say by themselves.

The entry for this issue in our FAQ is:

http://www.es.debian.org/CD/faq/#small-dvd

www language and cookies

2006-05-31 Thread nigel barker
I find that every debian page I visit appears in Japanese until I click
English at the bottom of the page. Unfortunately some pages don't have
that option, and others remain partially in Japanese after I change
language (eg wiki pages). changing mirror doesn't help, either.

I realise that I am getting Japanese because I am located in Japan, but
can't a cookie be set for my preferred langauge? That is what happens with
Google. First visit - google japan. Every subsequent visit unless I clear
cookies - google.com.

Or if I select the US mirror, give me US english.

This is quite a recent problem. In the past I have always had debian pages
in english by default.

I'm sorry if this appears as a complaint. Thanks for the great work.

Hi!

* Matt Kraai [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060531 06:32]:

I don't think this is true anymore. Based on the CVS logs, it looks
like a variety of people have been working on the list, so I think it
should be safe for anyone to update it.

Well, I think the other editing the file might haven't seen the
statement in the header, like I did ;)

* Martin Schulze [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060530 19:06]:

Tolimar informed me that several CD vendors that we list on
http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/ are not reachable by the links we
 provide.

A colleague at work told me that. So I checked the german vendors yesterday
(there are two with quite outdated, I pinged both, one mail bounced, the
other one said they will update their offerings soon).

This shows us an important fact: Checking the URLs is not enough (all
german vendors had valid URLs), someone needs to check the content of
the URLs too (and I think that can't be automated). Guess that would be
my job, since I set the ball rolling...

If no one else volunteers (or has a good idea on how to automate
checking the contents for up-to-dateness), I'll try to do that as my
time permits to keep that data in good shape.

Might be a good idea, to add a log file, which vendor got pinged by
whome, and what their reaction and consequence was.

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

That would be very cool!

We also need a more sane format for the vendor information in vendors.CD. A
format similar to Mirrors.masterlist would be nice, and a script which
sorts the vendors according to the locale of the language used on the page.
Oh, and eliminate spelling out the full shop URL, only create a link, and
make the table more compact in the process, and... and... :-)

IMHO it would be useful if there were two different mechanisms: First, a
mail should be sent to vendors at regular intervals, with a link they must
click on. If they do not click on the link (i.e. do not read mail sent to
their official contact address), then remove them from the list after a
while.

Second, the Debian CD page should be automatically downloaded. If the
current distribution cannot be found (e.g. the string 3.1 rev2 does not
occur), then also remove them from the listing after some time.

...or something like that. Unfortunately, it is a bit difficult to set this
up as part of the regular build of the www pages.

[Website] Package search broken for two or more keywords

2006-05-31 Thread oscaruser
Folks,

http://packages.debian.org;

Performing two or more keyword searchs causes search results error diagnostics,
Error: keyword not valid or missing, when entered. FYI This has been broken
for a long time ( 1 year). Perhaps I am the only one attempting to search for
packages using two or more keywords, but I think this is unlikely. For a single
keyword search, there is no issues. To reproduce the error try,

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=html+stripsearchon=allsubword=1version=stablerelease=all

Ugh, that's really a hard job. As said, I really don't know how to
automate that, so I do everything by hand. So far I got to the
beginning of Australia...

We also need a more sane format for the vendor information in vendors.CD. A

sorts the vendors according to the locale of the language used on the page.
Oh, and eliminate spelling out the full shop URL, only create a link, and
make the table more compact in the process, and... and... :-)

What would be even cooler: The user has a form, where he can specify
wher the shipment goes to (you may add your sorting by locale idea
here), and chooses which architecure and which kind of medium he would
like to have (and perhaps checkboxes for not together with non-free,
only official CDs, no vendor releases or perhaps even only pressed
nothing burned).

After that he get's a list of vendors sorted by his interest: Near
vendors on the top, vendors which fullfill his request only partly at
the end.

Currently we don't have all the data available for that; some vendors
sell for example alpha and ia-64 on CD, but i386 only on DVD. And for
some vendors Debian got to big: They sell parts of the officla disc
sets.

Other interesting point about the webpage: It states at the beginning
that we mark resellers, but we don't. And actually I'm to lazy to check
that, too. So I might just remove that phrase.

Might be a good idea, to add a log file, which vendor got pinged by

their official contact address), then remove them from the list after a

That sounds like a good idea. At least we could send them their data by
script, asking them if that is still up to date.

It's even more difficult: Some have 3.1r0 DVDs and add upgrade CDs
later.
Checking for specific srings on the website could become very
complicate, since there are to many of them. So far I already saw:
3.1r2 3.1rev2 3.1+Upgrades, 31R2, aktuelle Revision von Sarge, sarge
von xx.yy..

As said: I wouldn't to it by hand, if I knew an easy and working way to
script it ;)

You could _fully_automatically_ restrict the results to the country that
the visitor comes from, by using geoip. :)

However, you'll run into trouble setting this up on the Debian servers,
where you cannot install a script just like that... IMHO, it's a good
idea to first fix the more pressing issue of eliminating stale entries,
and keep the static pages for the time being.

Currently we don't have all the data available for that; some vendors
sell for example alpha and ia-64 on CD, but i386 only on DVD. And for
some vendors Debian got to big: They sell parts of the officla disc sets.

I think the DVD-related info is wrong for many entries: Lots of vendors
sell DVDs but this is not listed.

Second, the Debian CD page should be automatically downloaded. If the
current distribution cannot be found (e.g. the string 3.1 rev2 does not
occur), then also remove them from the listing after some time.

3.1r0+upgrade should be listed as 3.1r2 (or whatever is applicable as the
result of the upgrade) on our page.

Checking for specific srings on the website could become very
complicate, since there are to many of them.

Oh, IMHO that's not a problem: We have a certain power because an entry on
our page means real cash for vendors. So we can just demand: Put that
string on your web page or we will not list you. People will get this idea
pretty quickly... ;-)

Cheers,

  Richard
