ziyi_key_2007?

2007-02-15 Thread Povl Ole Haarlev Olsen
Hi everybody.

On http://www.debian.org/releases/ under "Integrity of the data in the
releases" it says:

[- quote -]
Digital signatures for this file are stored in the file Release.gpg, using
the key called ziyi_key_2006 (expires on the 7th of February 2007).
[- end quote -]

A similar problem can be found at http://ftp-master.debian.org/ under
"Archive signing key", where it says:

[- quote -]
The release files are signed by an automatic archive signing key. The 2006
key can be downloaded here
[- end quote -]

If the old key is expired, the texts and links should be changed to point
to the new key.

http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key_2007.asc gives a 404. Does anyone
know where the new key is?

That is total nonsense. There are no music files on any Debian
installation CD.

However, if it can scan the image, that would mean that it can mount it...

I did the integrity test and it failed (still under Virtual Machine).

After a while of scanning it said a directory with some music files or so
was corrupt.

But how can this be, this is the second ISO I have downloaded from Debian.

Or could it be the virtual machine, that the cd-rom does not work well
there?

But I never had problems with for instance Server 2003, that installs great.

(I'm new to Linux, I have SuSe installed and I want to check out Debian.)

Kind regards, Menno

Almost all "regular" Debian mailing lists are in English, so good choice.
You should only use other languages on language-specific mailing lists.

This is not really the correct mailing list for this question, as you
could have seen from http://lists.debian.org/debian-www/. The best you
could have done is to file an installation report [1].
For now, I'm moving this thread to the debian-boot mailing list. Please
reply _only_ to that list.

Seems to work fine for me. Note that you probably should not click the
iso, but right-click and use "save as".

The images are not corrupt. Either you are doing something wrong, or the
program you use to download the image can't handle large files.
For DVDs, using jigdo or bittorrent is very much preferred anyway!

To check if your image is correct, check its md5sum.
See http://www.debian.org/CD/faq/. That answers a lot of basic questions.

That can mean a lot of things. One of them could be that the linux kernel
does not support the CD controller that the virtual machine offers.
Try switching to VT2 (using alt-F2) after the error message and run the
command 'dmesg'. See if it mentions anything about the CD-ROM drive.

Also, send us the output of 'lspci -nn' for the virtual machine.

Link doesn't work

2007-02-15 Thread Menno
Hello,

I'm not sure I'm adressing a Dutch person right now so I'll write my mail in
English :-)

I tried to download the DVD distro from your primary server (as advised on
your website).

However, I can't download the ISO files:

1. On http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/

I clicked on "Bij twijfel, gebruik de primaire
  CD-image-server in Zweden."

2. There I went to:

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/i386/iso-dvd/

3. And there I clicked in the ISO files.

Result: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

I just downloaded from a mirror though and now I have the files.

Just 1 problem: could the ISO be corrupt?

Because when I try to install it on a Microsoft Virtual Machine (to test it
first) I says it can't read from the cd-rom!

After a few setup screens I get the warning that it can't read from the CD.

I get this message when he's "loading the components for the Debian
Installer".

I used the option of Virtual Machine to use an ISO and I also mounted the
ISO with Deamon Tools.

It doesn't help: it keeps saying it can't read the cd as soon as it starts
loading the components from the Debian Installer.

But it does read from the cd-rom/dvd in the steps before that so it can read
the cd-rom.

But could the rest of the ISO perhaps be corrupt?

Or does the problem lie with Virtual Machine perhaps?

Kind regards, Menno

I removed the references to woody, I'm not convinced about the other proposed
changes, so didn't apply them.

It's always possible to change the template after release ;-)

Well it is good to know that Debian wasn't installed on your computer
with malicious intent.

(The developer is in the CC list. They'll be able to respond to this
better than I can, as I have never even used that installer.)

Windows programs, (.exe files), do not run naively in a Linux/Unix
environment. There are work-arounds to make them run, using a program
called WINE.

But instead of using WINE, I typically recommend people find open-source
software to replace the proprietary software they were using. For
example, instead of Microsoft Office, use Open Office. Here's a
quick-list of popular desktop software and their Debian superiors:

MS Office = OpenOffice.org 2.0
Outlook / Outlook Express = Evolution / IceDove
Windows Media Player = Rythmbox and Totem/mplayer
Photoshop = GIMP
Internet Explorer = IceWeasle

Many users feel that the Open-Source replacements are superior to their
proprietary counterparts, but it may require a bit of getting-used-to.

Debian is a great system. It is functional, stable, secure, and free.
There are disadvantages, though. I wrote a lot about these in a blog
post, The Disadvantages of Linux and Open Source Software(1), where I
describe substantial negative issues that many users face when switching
from Microsoft Windows to a Linux-Based Operating System, and how to
deal with them.

Please give it a quick reading, and if you think you can face these
issues, run that installer next time you boot, and let us know how you
do.
