I think it was something about that database import script that relied on
current vendors.CD file format, and something about sorting. We can scrap
the former because I don't think a separate database is used any more
(seeS?), and the latter can be addressed by Denis and other WML hackers
should the need arise.

¡Hola Eduardo!

Thank you for trying to promote Debian in Paraguay! :-)

We can include you in our list of Debian CD/DVD vendors on
. However, this is only possible if you
sell Debian CDs or DVDs, not if you only offer servers with Debian
pre-installed.

I had a look at your site and there is no information on what CDs/DVDs
exactly you offer, and no price information. Most links from the home page
only lead to "404 Not Found" error pages. You need to fix these problems
before we can list you on debian.org. Once you have done this, you can use
the form that is reachable via to
submit your information.

All the best,

It's not that we need to be in control, but that actually changing the
license is such a pain that we really only want to do it once. The
more restrictive the license we pick, the more likely it is we'll have
to revisit this. Since contributors can't always be contacted, the
more time passes, the more difficult (or impossible) it will become.

If it is at all possible, I want to solve it once and not have to
revisit it again.

Bits from the packages.debian.org maintainer

2007-06-02 Thread Frank Lichtenheld
Hi.

Since I seem to sense an increased stream of offers to help out with
packages.d.o coming my way (but maybe that is just wishful thinking ;)
I wanted to give a short update on the development of the current code
and the status of the infrastructure so that nobody can claim he wanted
to help but failed due to lack of information.

 - The code in the CVS is seriously lacking in many regards, especially
update and CGI speed. It runs pretty stable though and since we
excluded robots from using the CGI scripts it seems to run with at
least enough speed to keep any big complaints from rising.
(If anyone is interested, packages.d.o currently has
about 200,000 page hits a day, with a notable decrease
   - up to 50,000 - during the etch freeze and a similar increase after
   release)
 - packages.d.o is currently run on puccini.d.o, this host is
exclusivly used for this purpose. Adminstration is be done
by group pkg_maint, current members are Martin 'Joey' Schulze
   and me.
 - The same code is also used to create the page
http://packages.ubuntu.com, see branch ubuntu in CVS.
packages.ubuntu.com is run a private server of mine and
   only administrated by me.
 - Everybody with write access to the website has also write access
to this part of the CVS. The code run on packages.d.o is
updated once a day during the update cron job. Since there
is no staging ground for changes, any commits should be made
   with extreme care...
 - Last year Jeroen van Wolffelaar and I started to develop a new
version with the goal to make dynamic page generation possible
which allows for faster update of information and more flexible
presentation. We coordinated our work by using a SVN repository
   located at http://svn.wolffelaar.nl/
 - This development was stalled several times when he and/or I had no time
   to actively pursue it.
 - In April 2007 I decided to revive the development to get the code
in a state ready for deployment. Since I was by then inititated
in the wonders of distributed scm, I decided to move the code to
   yet another repository:
   http://source.djpig.de/git/?p=packages.git;a=summary
   (for cloning use git://source.djpig.de/git/packages.git)
There is also a ubuntu branch there but it is in a rather
sorry state atm regarding site layout.
 - I think the new code is currently in a state where it could be
safely deployed to packages.d.o but I'm currently waiting for
an etch upgrade of the host since the code has grown some dependencies on
stuff only available in etch. The next possibility for this
to happen is probably during Debconf.
 - I don't know yet how to handle the SCM stuff when the code
   is to be deployed.
 - You can try out this new code base at http://packages.debian.net/
(Might be slightly out-of-date sometimes since I don't run the
cronjob as often as possible to give packages.ubuntu.com more
   ressources)
 - Bug reports and patches against this version are very much welcome,
please send them directly to me (but feel free to CC debian-www
if you want to have an open discussion on the matter in question).
 - Bug reports and patches against the version currently in use should
be directed to the BTS as usual.
 - If there is interest we can make a little improvised BoF about
   packages.d.o at Debconf.

Gruesse,

As I said, I am not willing to accept what a future GR does to
the freedom of my contributions. I have been running GR's for a while,
and I know how silly some of the winners are. The doc relicensing to
the GFDL by the FSF comes to mind here.

And kinda draconian. Why are we being so hell bent on
restricting the free license choices for our contributors? As long as
the licenses are free, why dowe feel the need to be in control so much?

Faced with just these choices, I am beginning to feel the urge
to resist anything but GPL v3 for my contributions :)

Hi!

Please could you add kfreebsd-amd64 into packages.debian.org
search scripts, similarly as already done for kfreebsd-i386 ?

Its archive location is the same as for kfreebsd-i386.

Thanks

armel and kfreebsd-amd64 are now added to packages.debian.org

Sorry for all the delays while handling this bug. I had hoped
to switch to the new codebase much sooner, but this still
hasn't happened (mostly due to faults of my own).

Also added armel to packages.debian.net, kfreebsd-amd64 was
already added there.

Remaining issue: Fixing the note on the bottom of the download
page for armel. Will do it as I come to it, but patches welcome.

Hi, this is a topic for the debian-user mailing list, not debian-www, but
I'll answer anyway.

To fix this you need to download the "hostname" package from
http://packages.debian.org/hostname
Be sure to select the right version depending on what version of Debian you
are running.

Download the .deb file, then open a command shell and use this command to
reinstall the package:
dpkg -i hostname_*.deb

I think that we could write a short script similar to CD vendors
pages, where all data would be in one structured (e.g. XML) file, and
script would make copyright page per language. This would make it easy
to acknowledge copyrights of people who do not have commit access or
are not DDs. There is many of those people (I'm one, being coordinator
for Finnish translations, not being DD but having commit access to the
web site).

At least data should contain full name, copyright years, and which
languages are affected. Maybe we should record in data (but not
publish in web pages) about willingness to relicense data with
specific licenser or give permission for Debian project (or SPI Inc.)
to relicense in any DFSG compatible license.

This way there would be no copyright assignments, no paper work. Of
course relicensing would be done based on trust on email communication
about willingness of authors... (Also not all authors have PGP keys.)

This way we generate /license pages nicely and per translation.
Then for example Finnish license page would contain list of authors in
English and a list of Finnish translators (separately?).

Also a file in CVS would very convenient way to keep track of authors.
