PLIP is the answer indeed.
BTW, that is documented as a part of the installation manual:

FYI, The language selection is done based on the language selected in
your web browser, see: http://debian.org/intro/cn

This is a browser issue. Change what your browser sends as
Acccept-Language, and you'll magically get pages in the language you
want (if possible). If your browser doesn't allow you to alter it for
specific requests, then ask for patches to enable it (or write or
install add-ons which allow it.)

If this is just for debbuging:

wget -O- --header='Accept-Language: de' http://www.debian.org

will do what you want.

Communication through the parallel port

2009-04-28 Thread Juan Navarro
Hi list,

A friend gave me an old German laptop:

- Intel 80486
- 20 MB Ram
- Serial and parallel port
- Floppy disk unit (broken)
- Expansion bus slot
- Operative system: Windows 95
- 500MB hard disk
- Norton Commander 5 for DOS installed

He wanted to rescue all the information that he had in the laptop (and may be
find a way to still use the laptop), the problem is that the laptop has the
floppy disk unit broken and the is no way to access de information.

I use Debian 5 and I have a laplink cable so I decided at the beginning install
Dosemu to run Norton Commander v5 (I was very lucky to have found this program
that I used when I was a teenager to transfer files between my computers a long
time ago) for DOS under GNU/Linux, because with wine didn't work.

After some attempts I gave up, it was not possible to stablish a communication
through the computers using GNU and Windows. I guessed there was a problem with
the parallel port hardware access, I enabled the lpt0 hardware access in Dosemu
but nothing happened even though the lpt0 device is working in Debian.

I tried with Windows, I found a computer with Windows Vista and it worked,
amazing the fact that NC could still run under Windows Vista, although NC have
some problems with Windows Vista (I don't blame NC) but at least I could
recover the information.

Ok, it worked, but I don't like to use MS products, I spent many hours
searching in the Net to find if there are software like NC for GNU, but, I just
found Midnight Commander, but unfortunately it does not have parallel port link
capability.

I found some Windows based programs that are capable to transfer information
through the parallel port like Total Commander, but none for GNU systems, I
couldn't believe that because GNU/Linux claims to be suitable for old computer
as for new computers, but not all the old computer have a network card and
today the only way to access that computers is through the parallel or serial
port.

Could it be possible that there are no software to perform this task under
GNU/Linux?

I found an interesting feature in the Debian Installation Guide about to use
the parallel port to install Debian, which I think is very good. I didn't try
this.

I also found another interesting way to use the parallel port to access to
Internet using the Plip driver, I think this can be a good solution to the
connectivity between old and new computers:

LINUX PLIP MINI-HOWTO
Andrea Controzzi, contr...@cli.di.unipi.it
v2.1, 12 March 1998

http://tldp.org/HOWTO/PLIP-9.html

Quickly Setting Up PLIP and NFS
June 1st, 1998 by Loris Renggli in
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/2573

The articles mention that to access to Internet through a GNU/Linux computer
the Windows/DOS computer have to use basically two programs:

The Plip driver for DOS
ftp://ftp.crynwr.com/drivers/plip.zip

And

Trumpet WinSock

I think they are very good articles but when I try to implement the Plip
solution, I could not make it work, may be I'm not good enough with GNU/Linux
networks and also I couldn't find the exactly Trumpet WinSock article's version.

I think access Internet through the parallel port in theory is a great idea but
why the free software community never develop easy to use tools to manage the
parallel port connectivity between computers?. Perhaps everybody is able to
write a program to do it.

I know that this is a very old issue, but as in my case, sometimes this kind of
solutions are needed. In the MS Windows world there are still software that
perform this task.

To finish my questions are:

- Is there a way to connect two computers through the parallel port in
GNU/Linux?
- Is there a easy way to have Internet connectivity in GNU/Linux using the
parallel port?

Think about all that old computers that could be revived!

Thanks in advance,
Juan Navarro..

I couldn't agree more - language/alphabet selection should be possible
per-page. It is accepted that it's convenient for the IP to determine
the initial language being served, but please let me have a clickable
selection of language, even in other alphabets (I use English,
Spanish, Bulgarian and Arabic, amongst others)

Thanks for all the good work - - I try to help too. ;)

language settings

2009-04-28 Thread Thomas Ziegler
Hi there in Debian-land,

I am traveling a lot and working in different countries. And every time I
open the debian pages from a computer in a different country I get it
opened in the local language. It might be convenient for many users, that
the server can automaticlly select the language. And it also seems
convenient for you to let the user change the browser's default language
settings. But especially the last point is neither possbile for all users
nor desirable for the browser usage, as in my case. People might want to
read different pages in different personally preferred languages without
changing the default language setting of their browser every time. I
normally have more than 30 pages in different languages open at the same
time. And I might even want to have a look at one page in different
languages. This is all just part of living in a global world, though many
people might not yet even think of that. But it will become more and more
normal in the not so far future. So be prepared and give users a different
way to read the debian pages in different languages. In a more distant
future in which computers will be more intelligent than humans and just
"know" what users want, you could still fall back to your current
solution. ;-)

Thanks, for your help in advance.

Bug#526032: packages.debian.org: add a link to the DDTP web interface to tranlate/improve a package description

2009-04-28 Thread Simon Paillard
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n

Hi,

packages.debian.org displays the translation of descriptions provided by DDTP.
These descriptions can be translated using the web interface at
http://ddtp.debian.net/ddtss/index.cgi/

In order to :
* get new users involved in translation
* get more translated descriptions of packages
* get free proofreading of Debian users

=> we may add a link from the package page to
http://ddtp.debian.net/ddtss/index.cgi/$lang/translate/$package
like "Help improving this translation".

I am aware of the possible drawback (that we can observe on translations
that came out of Rosetta) of such a link with translation opened to
anonymous contributors..

Feel free to comment.

Re: A few questions about consultants page

2009-04-28 Thread Giuseppe Sacco
[Sorry Andrei, this was meant to be sent to the list]

Hi all,
I started adding three entries to the consultants page, but I have a few
questions:

1. is there any ordering for all consultants in the same country?
2. I noticed a lot of pages with "additional_info" translated. Should we
ask the submitter for additional_info translations?
3. one email was asking for removing an entry. It came from a different
email address than the one published, but the user name was the same;
the published email address is now not existent and the web site page
has been removed. Is there any policy in order to better check for
"authorised" requests for removal?

Bye,
Giuseppe

The three sites work for me, all only offer Debian 4. They are serious
offers, they're just not up to date. I generally don't tend to remove
vendors if they are lagging behind like this, unless their offerings are
ridiculously out of date.

Mehdi, it may have been worth the try to contact the Swedish vendors and
ask whether they offer a newer version!

First, please wait a little longer and keep asking them. Maybe they do have
connectivity problems and cannot download the images, and you will still
get them once their issues are resolved.

If you don't get the DVDs in another 2 weeks or so (and please also if you
do get them) write to us about it!

I've taken note of your complaint. We generally do not remove vendors from
our list after just a single complaint, but we will watch out for further
negative reports about this vendor, and remove him if it becomes clear that
he is unreliable.

All the best,

  Richard

What about to add JabberID as an xmpp link in addition to IRC ?
Many users/contributors use jabber, it would be nice to have the possibility to
add a proper xmpp link through your macro as MoinMoin does not provide such (as
far as I search for it though).

Thats weird, because there are three vendors listed:

OK, recheced the Vendors and:

1) LinuxsShop.nu
has only 4.0r0 DVD and CD i386/powepc

2) OKIT
Is this website in a Dial-Up?
I have an internet (backbone) connection of 100 MBit and

3) Wermlandsdata

  The offerins/Sites are not serious.
