website templates for DPN / DWN

2008-06-12 Thread Alexander Schmehl
Hi!

As you might know, when I started to resurrect our newsletter, I decided
to rename it to Debian Project News instead of the old Debian Weekly
News. The idea behind that was, that since the DPN is send out on a
bi-weekly basis, the old name seemed to not fit in very well.

But when I started to send them out, I added them to the old path of our
website. It was a mixture of being lazy and having them in the place,
where people where used to read them.

So far, so good; the problem I didn't thought about back than is, that
the template system used... Well: To make a long story short: On the
website as well as in the rdf-feeds they still appear as Weekly News;
(and they are propagated to several news services by that name, too, not
to mention that the script used to generate the mail version uses the
website as base, too).

So I'm wondering what to do; if I change the templates, all old issues
of the DWN will be renamed, too, won't they? I'm not sure, that would
be a nice idea. And the URL would still contain the name weekly.

The second idea would be to create a new directory
webwml/foo/News/project or something like that, that would be more or
less the same as the weekly directory, but with slightly different
templates, so the DWN would still be the DWN and the DPN could stay the
DPN. Big disadvantage: We would need to change some links on our
website, links from the outside would need to be changed (e.g. for those
who fetch the news feed), I still had the plan in my mind, that we
might rename the DPN back to DWN, if we get enough stories send in to
send them out on a weekly basis again.

So... beside inventing a time machine and forcing make me think about
that problem before I added the first four issues to the wrong
directory, has anyone a good idea?

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

Oh, and of course there's the obvious solution to just rename the DPN
back to DWN now, which would solve the issues mentioned in my first
mail, but would be - IMHO - wrong, since they aren't send out weekly.

Any other ideas?

Problems with creation of the weekly/project news RDF feed

2008-04-22 Thread Alexander Schmehl
Hi!

It seems, that the create of the RDF feed for the weekly news is somehow
broken (that's why I disabled it for now in the Makefile).

I get the following error message:

==
~/debian/webwml/english/News/weekly$ make
../../../english/News/weekly/dwn-to-rdf.pl
Invalid format for date! at
/usr/share/perl5/XML/RSS/Private/Output/Base.pm line 251
make: *** [dwn.en.rdf] Fehler 25
==

Removing 2008/01 solves the problem, so it seems to be my fault, but I
don't know why. The PUBDATE field of 2008/01/index.wml looks okay to
me.

Anyone has an idea? Or can tell me, how to get more verbose output?

  Alexander

Beside that Wir warten auf Sponsoren is IMHO a bad translation (it's more
like We wait for sponsors; I don't think votes can use such personal
style, I would propose Warten auf Unterstützer or something similar), it
is the wrong categorie, since its In Discussion.

Thanks, for your feedback, but could there be a small missunderstanding?
We don't say, that Tibet is a nation, just that the state of Bhutan is
situated between those three locations, where we don't make any remarks
about the status of these three locations.

If I remember correctly onf of the first drafts only mentioned between
India and China, which seemed to inaccurate to us, since India and
China share a quite long border (and is even a more inaccurate
description, since the Indian-Chinese border is separated in two parts
by Nepal, isn't it?). So we felt the need to add more information where
Bhutan is and added Tibet as a third location, just to clarify in which
part of asia Bhutan is.

I'm sorry if we hurt your feelings in our attemp to describe accurate
where Bhutan is, but I don't think we did something wrong, and while
thinking about it, I don't know an other phrase. But feel free to
propose a better one.

* Richard Atterer [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060601 00:28]:

Currently we don't have all the data available for that; some vendors
sell for example alpha and ia-64 on CD, but i386 only on DVD. And for
some vendors Debian got to big: They sell parts of the officla disc sets.
I think the DVD-related info is wrong for many entries: Lots of vendors
sell DVDs but this is not listed.

I'm about to change that, too:
$ grep -c DVDtype debian/webwml/english/CD/vendors/vendors.CD
4

Just started with it ;)

Re: CD vendors to be reviewed

2006-05-31 Thread Alexander Schmehl
Hi!

* Matt Kraai [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060531 06:32]:

I don't think this is true anymore. Based on the CVS logs, it looks
like a variety of people have been working on the list, so I think it
should be safe for anyone to update it.

Well, I think the other editing the file might haven't seen the
statement in the header, like I did ;)

* Martin Schulze [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060530 19:06]:

Tolimar informed me that several CD vendors that we list on
http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/ are not reachable by the links we
 provide.

A colleague at work told me that. So I checked the german vendors yesterday
(there are two with quite outdated, I pinged both, one mail bounced, the
other one said they will update their offerings soon).

This shows us an important fact: Checking the URLs is not enough (all
german vendors had valid URLs), someone needs to check the content of
the URLs too (and I think that can't be automated). Guess that would be
my job, since I set the ball rolling...

If no one else volunteers (or has a good idea on how to automate
checking the contents for up-to-dateness), I'll try to do that as my
time permits to keep that data in good shape.

Might be a good idea, to add a log file, which vendor got pinged by
whome, and what their reaction and consequence was.

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

Re: CD vendors to be reviewed

2006-05-31 Thread Alexander Schmehl
Hi!

* Richard Atterer [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060531 22:17]:

If no one else volunteers (or has a good idea on how to automate checking
the contents for up-to-dateness), I'll try to do that as my time permits
to keep that data in good shape.
 That would be very cool!

Ugh, that's really a hard job. As said, I really don't know how to
automate that, so I do everything by hand. So far I got to the
beginning of Australia...

We also need a more sane format for the vendor information in vendors.CD. A
format similar to Mirrors.masterlist would be nice, and a script which
sorts the vendors according to the locale of the language used on the page.
Oh, and eliminate spelling out the full shop URL, only create a link, and
make the table more compact in the process, and... and... :-)

What would be even cooler: The user has a form, where he can specify
wher the shipment goes to (you may add your sorting by locale idea
here), and chooses which architecure and which kind of medium he would
like to have (and perhaps checkboxes for not together with non-free,
only official CDs, no vendor releases or perhaps even only pressed
nothing burned).

After that he get's a list of vendors sorted by his interest: Near
vendors on the top, vendors which fullfill his request only partly at
the end.

Currently we don't have all the data available for that; some vendors
sell for example alpha and ia-64 on CD, but i386 only on DVD. And for
some vendors Debian got to big: They sell parts of the officla disc
sets.

Other interesting point about the webpage: It states at the beginning
that we mark resellers, but we don't. And actually I'm to lazy to check
that, too. So I might just remove that phrase.

Might be a good idea, to add a log file, which vendor got pinged by
whome, and what their reaction and consequence was.
IMHO it would be useful if there were two different mechanisms: First, a
mail should be sent to vendors at regular intervals, with a link they must
click on. If they do not click on the link (i.e. do not read mail sent to
their official contact address), then remove them from the list after a
 while.

That sounds like a good idea. At least we could send them their data by
script, asking them if that is still up to date.

Second, the Debian CD page should be automatically downloaded. If the
current distribution cannot be found (e.g. the string 3.1 rev2 does not
occur), then also remove them from the listing after some time.

...or something like that. Unfortunately, it is a bit difficult to set this
up as part of the regular build of the www pages.

It's even more difficult: Some have 3.1r0 DVDs and add upgrade CDs
later.
Checking for specific srings on the website could become very
complicate, since there are to many of them. So far I already saw:
3.1r2 3.1rev2 3.1+Upgrades, 31R2, aktuelle Revision von Sarge, sarge
von xx.yy..

As said: I wouldn't to it by hand, if I knew an easy and working way to
script it ;)

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

Bug#363496: www.debian.org/doc/books should list books publication year

2006-04-19 Thread Alexander Schmehl
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

IMHO it would be nice to list the year when the book was published /
last edited, not only to which distribution they apply, too.

e.g. the Debian Anwender Handbuch by Frank Ronneburg has been
re-edited and expanded at least one time since sarge has been released.

Yours sincerely,
  Alexander

PS: If you need a volunteer to contact the authors and add that
information to the page, I could do that.

 Hi Folks,

I've just put together some artwork that you may be interested in using
for Debian Woody cds, available at:

 http://www.jonnyblair.co.uk/debian/

Because I haven't quite got the hang of GIMP, I've so far been unable to
create a single template file that allows you to edit copy to your
specific needs. I plan to address this soon.

In the meantime, the files available at the above url are appropriate
for the I386 Binary set of discs only.

Hope you find these of some use,

Bug#240900: debian-www: Mirror Size page needs updating

2004-04-21 Thread Alexander Schmehl
* Ryan Lovett [EMAIL PROTECTED] [040421 19:23]:

Thank you for looking into this for me. Is the 8 GB for i386 the total for
stable? If so, do you have the breakdown for unstable? (I should've mentioned
this before.) If its not too much trouble, are there figures for binary and
 source as well?

One moment...

$ du -s /pub/debian
14988752/pub/debian

Our stable, testing and unstable mirror (i386 without source) takes
currently 15GB.

Are you sure stable takes 8GB? I thought woody came with 7 CDs, 7*650MB
= 4.5 GB ?

Most sites I visited changed their main site, but left a link to the

IIRC last time FFII called for strike, we had a big header swpat aren't

Lieber Christian,

I heard you will have a booth at LinuxTag in Karlsruhe/Germany. May I
 buy Debian CDs there?

You mailed to the wrong List, since this one is used for coordination
of the people who create and translate our websites. The
debian-events-eu list would have been better.

And we won't sell CDs ourself, since we don't sell CDs ourself. You can
get a Debian one disk version, containing all important packages, for
free.

Some Reseller (LinuxLand, Lehmass, ...) will be at LinuxTag, too.
You can buy a complete disc set from them.
