For old releases (buster and before) we only keep the plain-text
variant on the website.
So why not do so for Bullseye as well now?

So it now tries to use other fonts, but fails in the same way at the end.

Thus, there is something different badly broken here, not the fonts itself...

Since I fear we won't get a fix for this from dblatex/xetex maintainers resp.
upstream for this special situation (bullseye buildchain on bookworm machine)
I think it would be the best solution, to disable PDF for all languages for
bullseye. Not perfect, but probably the best we can get.
That way we would at least get up-to-date html versions in case of late
changings, but hey - this is only for LTS period of oldstable and should
therefore be acceptable.

The feeding of the robot is not useless; the information is processed and

2024-07-26 Thread Holger Wansing
robot
(https://l10n.debian.org/coordination/spanish/es.by_translator.html)
are integrated into the centralized l10n statistics page
(https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/es).
That statistics pages are originally not planned to deal with these data,
and this is the reason for inconsistencies, which people are seing.

Of course, this would force people to look at two pages instead of only
one, to see the whole picture.
But probably that would be an improvement nevertheless.
That would divide the huge process of building this whole statistics beast
into two smaller parts, allowing for easier maintenance and debugging in
case of errors (or topics, that just seem to be an error, but are not).

And finally:
The page
https://i18n.debian.org/nmu-radar/nmu_bypackage.html
is currently pointless, since there is noone doing such NMU uploads for
l10n updates (that was bubulle's part, who is no longer active in Debian).
So people should not care about this page.
Maybe we should remove it? Or place a big fat warning about its status?
It's annoying, if different pages (with totally different approaches) are
compared against, and the differences lead to such complains.

So long

Debian website: Translation sync

2024-05-05 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello all (previous website translators in BCC):

recently there were some changings in English, which you are not aware of
probably, since the relevant files are not listed at the website statictics
pages like https://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats/de.

I did some syncing as far as possible for me, however there is still some little
work to do for translators.

So you might want to look into these files:
webwml//international/l10n/po/tmpl.src
webwml//international/l10n/po4a/tmpl.src

You can lookup the changings in English via these commands:
git diff 29e4b6a41ff6..0b3b565fa9cc -- english/international/l10n/po/tmpl.src
git diff 29e4b6a41ff6..0b3b565fa9cc -- english/international/l10n/po4a/tmpl.src

> I agree, and still think we should be publishing the single page version.

1.
Currently, the package does not ship this version. So this would have to
be re-added there.

2.
There are pro's and con's for both the single-page and multi-page variants.
Thus the only possible way IMO is to ship both via www.d.o.
The developers-refererence also ships both already, so it would be consistent
there.
To make the existing mechanism work, which finds both variants on the
web mirrors via webwml, the single-page html file needs to be named
debian-policy.html:
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/-/blob/master/english/doc/devel-manuals.defs?ref_type=heads
That needs to be dealed with in the package, just renaming the file does not
work, since it would break all the internal links.
(Don't know how it worked in the past on the website with the file being named
policy-1.html though.)

3.
There were several bugs (e.g. #873456, #876075, #879048) with the single-page
html version. Are they known to be solved now?
Sphinx has received much development in the past 7 years, so there may be a
chance to have them fixed ... (?)
To get an idea of where we stand, I have built latest version of debian-policy
with re-activated singlehtml variant (build via sbuild, so with latest Sphinx
version), made the copy-and-rename dance which happens on wolkenstein for
publication on www.d.o and pushed the result at
https://people.debian.org/~holgerw/debian-policy-with-singlehtml/

The multi-page html is found via
https://people.debian.org/~holgerw/debian-policy-with-singlehtml/debian-policy/index.html

while single-page html is at
https://people.debian.org/~holgerw/debian-policy-with-singlehtml/debian-policy/policy-1.html

Could the Policy Editors team check, if everything is fine now, and if
this should be published again?
At least there is still an issue with the footnotes, there are 16 occurrences
of #id1 for example... (search for "[1]" in policy-1.html).

So long

It's not a bug in sphinx or something like that.
The issue was in the build process for the website, what lead to some missing
files in the manuals' tree (javascript script files and the searchindex.js).

Everything fine for now.

I'm currently working on switching the Debian release-notes to the new theme,
and that might bring some issues, since the release-notes have translations as
well (this was not the case for the debian-policy).

So maybe I come back to you in such case, if that's ok?

Thanks

Debian RT - please install an additional dependency for new html theme for Sphinx-based release-notes on wolkenstein

2024-04-11 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello DSA

To switch the Debian release-notes to the new Debian-style html theme
(already active for debian-policy, see [1]), we need one more package
installed on wolkenstein: python3-sphinx-rtd-theme.

Rationale: other manuals like debian-policy are not built from scratch
on wolkenstein, but their binary package is downloaded, unpacked and copied
to www install path.
For release-notes this is different: since the release-notes are not in the
Debian archive (there is no such package like 'release-notes'), we need to
build the release-notes completely from scratch on wolkenstein.
Therefore we need the above mentioned package for the build.

Sorry for bothering you again regarding the Sphinx docs thingy.

I'm attaching a patch for the debian.org-www-master.debian.org
dependencies including the new dependency.

Kind regards,
Holger

I did not go deeper into this scenario, I just found
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=877337
which includes a forward-backword-forward dance switching multiple
times between multi-page and single-page html variant requests.

Bug#872944: #872944 www.debian.org: Remove JavaScript from Policy Manual published on web mirrors

2024-04-10 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello www team and debian-policy editor team,

in-line with activating the new html theme on our website I also
worked on the javascript front:

to make the html theme work on small screens (smartphones) the readthedocs.org
theme relies on javascript functionality, to display a sidebar with the table
of content only, when the device is in landscape direction resp. when the
burger button is pressed.

The second javascript functionality is the full-text search.

I made all needed changings, to get the above functions work and they are doing
fine now. See

Please note, that I made use of javascript by intend, despite of this bug
requesting to remove all js functionality.
This is because I wanted to find out, what we need (aka which javascript
packages) to make all the above mentioned functions work.
Since I lack the skills to value this simply by studying source code and
reading documentation, I had to test this in live to be sure.

The outcome of this is:
we need content of the javascript packages "libjs-sphinxdoc" and "libjs-jquery"
existing in the manuals' path, to accomplish the above goals.

We need to decide now, if we want these functionality, when they require
those javascript packages.
Or if we skip such functionality.

Note: apparently we have no alternative beside js, if we want full-text
search for html output (single-page html could be a possible way, but
that output format has been disabled due to various other issues).

And being able to show/hide the sidebar on smartphones is a great benefit
when screen size is limited.

There are requests to not use js, but it has also been mentioned, that it
may be worth it enabling js, because of the relatively reduced amount of js
use in sphinxdoc / jquery.
Note: I'm lacking skills to inspect source code, which other functions are
integrated in the doctools.js / jquery.js / searchtools.js / sphinx-highlight.js
scripts resp. what the functions I find there are doing exactly!
Maybe someone can make a statement here?

I would like to mention another point:
it's a Browser functionality for decades to have the possibility to disable
use of JavaScript. So people who want to avoid any risk due to js, can or
will most probably have JavaScript disabled in the Browser settings anyway.

Please note, that this decision is not only for debian-policy, but for
all sphinx-based manuals on Debian website.
(I hope we don't make different decisions on this question for the
various manuals we have. That would make the implentation once again
more difficult.)

What should be done now?

Holger

This is done now.
debian-policy on debian.org/doc is fine as it is now.

See commits 3462a061, a2262ec9 and ae8aa074 on
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/cron/-/commits/master/parts/7doc?ref_type=heads

So, we know now what is needed, to get it this far (aka: get the search
function working and make the html theme work on big (desktop pcs) and
small (smartphone) screens:

We need javascript functionality from the packages libjs-sphinxdoc and
libjs-jquery. Without these, the above funtions will not work.
I brought it this far, to make sure of this fact.

I will close this bug now.

Whether javascript will stay active on debian.org website will need to be
decided. I will follow up regarding this topic on
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=872944

Sorry, the above was complete nonsens, since for Developers Reference on the
website we use the binary Debian package as a basis, which is built by
buildds, so on unstable. Thus the Sphinx version on wolkenstein is completely
irrelevant.

I mixed that up with the release-notes, which I have worked on to migrate to
Sphinx: since there is no such package like 'release-notes' in the archive,
they in fact need to be built from scratch on wolkenstein.

So ...

$ time_machine start target=submitting-date

... we are back to the beginning:

Stefano Rivera wrote:
> Sphinx search is broken on the developers reference:

Note: I'm working on debian-policy now, which has also switched to Sphinx;
as debian-policy shows the same problem, I think it's a systematic issue and
thus a solution for this will work for other sphinx-based manuals as well
(hopefully).

First, I focused on the symlinks to several .js scripts in _static, which point
to not existing targets. That has been mentioned at several places, and drawed
my attention.
After several attempts I have all those scripts existing now on the relevant
place at https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/_static/,
however the search is still not working :-((

But then --- guess what: the subject says it all:
"searchindex.js is missing" !

Indeed, that file is existing here after a local build of the package, but
is missing on our webserver.
That's because the 7doc script in webmaster's cron repo (to push /doc content on
the website) does only process html files in the root directoriy of the manual,
no .js files.

I have prepared a build of debian-policy with all needed javascript scripts
and that searchindex.js file at
https://people.debian.org/~holgerw/new-rtd-sphinx-theme-for-debian/debian-policy/debian-policy/

Everything works fine there as far a I see (with a desktop firefox and brave
browser, as well as with the mobile versions of those browsers on my
smartphone).
Feel free to test with more browsers/platforms/whatever.

I guess I will need to trim the 7doc script once again - h ...

So long

Thanks to Stéphane Blondon, we have a nice Debian theme for Sphinx now, and
I managed to get it to the website in the end so far, currently visible at
debian-policy:
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/index.html

I had to deal with some missing javascript files as well, to make the
sidebar appear/disappear on small screens like smartphones, but that works
now.

The only thing which is not working currently, is the search functionality,
but since that's not theme-specific I guess (please correct me, if I'm
wrong), I close this bug.

Javascript leaves some open issues, but for those I will follow-up on some
existing javascript bugs, we already have for the website/manuals.

Yeah, that makes we aware of that this bug is now assigned to the wrong
package (this is no longer an issue on debian-policy side, but on
www.debian.org).

Therefore, web team is most probably not aware at all of this specific issue.
So, I'm reassigning this bug to www.debian.org now.
And also debian-doc in CC, since in the past the doc/manuals part of
the website was somehow under responsibility of -doc people IIRC.

@web + doc teams:
We have (after more than 5 years) a new Debian-style html theme for
sphinx-based
documents, created by Stéphane Blondon based on a readthedocs.org theme.
It looks really good, and a preview of debian-policy with this theme can be
seen here:
https://people.debian.org/~holgerw/new-rtd-sphinx-theme-for-debian/debian-policy/debian-policy/

However, getting this theme to work on the Debian website became more and more
of a challenge these days/weeks.
An issue came up, which can be seen at Debian's website:
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/
The html layout is completely broken, because the theme relys on files
provided by the sphinx-rtd-theme-common package, which are not there on
the www mirrors.
Getting that files correctly on the mirrors occured to become difficult, sadly.

You can find a current summary of this issue at
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1064593#125

This comes down to one more adaption of the 1ftpfiles / 7doc scripts
in webmaster's cron repo.
Attached is the latest version of my patch, to get this going.

It works so far, but I wonder if this is the way we want to go.
There is a significant amount of things, which need to work correctly to
make this new theme appear correctly on Debian's website:

We need a separate copy of 3 packages in our www build tree on
wolkenstein and all www static mirrors (simply let DSA install those
packages on the machines will not work).
And every sphinx-based manual needs relative symlinks in its tree, pointing
to the above packages' content.
The 1ftpfiles and 7doc scripts, which need to be adapted for that, and
also the situation on the www mirrors is getting more complex, so I'm unsure
if we want this.
See my patch.

On the other side, I don't see any other solution apart from developing
a new theme.

Comments?

I seems it has been forgotten to remove the reference for legal.pot from
./english/po/Makefile.
Doing that, lead to similar errors for other files, that have also been
removed shortly:
./english/security/dsa.rdf.in
./english/security/make-ref-table.pl
./english/security/index.include

Debian RT - please install an additional dependency for Sphinx-based documentation on wolkenstein

2024-03-24 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello DSA

Inline with the migration of documentation to restructedText / Sphinx there is
the need for one more package to be installed on www-master:

A somewhat longstanding topic is the creation of a Debian-style html theme for
those documents (currently the style of those docs is not really in-line with
the color scheme on debian.org. See [2] for example).
Thanks to Stéphane Blondon we have a proposal now (see [1]), which is based
on a theme from readthedocs.org.
To make that work, we need to have python3-sphinx-rtd-theme installed on
www-master (?).
Without that package, we have a broken html layout, which can be seen at
[3] currently.

Please note, that this dependency is not a build-dependency, but also needed
during runtime (aka: on every www mirror which serves those Sphinx-based
documents we need to have python3-sphinx-rtd-theme installed, to make the
new theme work for the website visitor).
However, I couldn't find any other stanza for www.debian.org web mirrors
than www-master.
Are all www mirrors deployed from this stanza, or how is it supposed to
work?

I'm attaching a patch for the debian.org-www-master.debian.org
dependencies including the new dependency, in the hope that it is correct
this way.

Kind regards,
Holger

Sounds fair.
So the proper long-term solution would be to apply changings like in the

On the other hand, I wonder if the above ("You don't need the year in the URL
any more") is strictly correct:

Looking at the security tracker for instance at
https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/chromium
then choosing a CVE like
https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2024-1077
and then at the referenced DSA at
https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/DSA-5612-1
there is a link to the DSA at debian.org (the link is just named "Debian")
that points to
https://www.debian.org/security/2024/dsa-5612
and that works: it gets redirected to the correct DSA announcement at
https://lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce/2024/msg00019.html

Now leaving out the year from above link like
https://www.debian.org/security/dsa-5612
also redirects to the same announcement.

@Thomas: is this the intended behaviour (both variants are supported
and it stays this way) ?
In that case nothing needs to be done in the point release announcements...

Good catch noticing this. Thanks for the heads-up!

Changings like in attached patch should do it.

That was a bad example.
There is no such language team like de_PY (German in Paraguay).
'py' is a substitution for 'python' here; there is a German po file for
some python module at that page.

So I have removed de_PY, fr_PY, it_PY and zh_PY from the list.

As well as bin (which is a substitution for binary) and cli (as a short form
for Commandline Interface) and cut (there are no po files for 'cut' language
at that page; there are Danish, German and French po files at that page).

Greetings

Calling strip-langs.sh from cron script directly does not work
as intended, so reverting back to my previos version.

While looking at the logs now, I see that I had to change that once more:

While my first approach was, to call this new script in
webwml/english/international/l10n/po/Makefile after the gen-files.sh run, I
now realize that the correct way is, to call strip-langs.sh in webmaster's
cron repo in lessoften-parts/1l10n-data, where the data/langs file is
created. (I somehow was in the assumption, that the gen-files.sh creates
data/langs, but today I saw I was wrong here.)
While both approaches worked so far, it's the cleaner (and more obvious) way,
to call strip-langs.sh via the cron script 1l10n-data directly after creating
data/langs.
Thus changing it that way.

New script to strip out entries from languages list

I have a tested patch here, which allows to strip out some of the language
entries out of the 'langs' list, so those entries do no longer show up at
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/ and the respective html
pages are not built as well.

For the first step I have chosen to delete most of the "Unknown language"
entries and some more, which are false-positives because of wrongly
named files/directories in packages.
It workes fine here locally.

The functionality is as the following:
When make is executed in the ./english/international/l10n/po directory,
the gen-files.sh script is called, which builds the list of languages
out of the material from https://i18n.debian.org/material/.
This list of languages is written to ./english/international/l10n/data/langs.

I have now created a script named strip-langs.sh, which removes entries
by choice from this langs file (you can define in this script, which
entries to remove).
The strip-langs.sh is called after the gen-files.sh run.
And then the html files for all the left languages are built.

With this, we would have an infrastructure, to remove single language
entries from the langs list choice by choice.

In additional steps, we could also remove entries like de_AT, de_CH, de_DE
and only leave 'de', as mentioned by Thomas.
But that's another discussion.

I have filed this as a merge request:
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/-/merge_requests/947

I have tested this for ../german/releases/trixie/installmanual.wml,
renamed that into installmanual.outdated and that works, the page gets
removed from the web, and otherwise no errors on the webwml build.
So, maybe that would be a possible "solution", instead of removing the
translation files completely?

I have a tested and working proposal ready now (here for
../releases/bookworm/index).

It contains six sets of different content, which makes it possible, to
dynamically enable the needed content for the respective situations over
the whole release cycle.

That all is controlled via these six variables:

--
# Is -2 the current release ? (yes/no)

# Is -1 the current release ? (yes/no)

# Is the current release ? (yes/no)

# Is +1 the current release ? (yes/no)

# Security updates discontinued for current release ? (yes/no)

# Has LTS period begun for current release ? (yes/no)

--

Apart from that, I have converted the hardcoded dates for "initial release
of Debian 12.0" and "security updates discontinued for Bookworm" into
tags defined in ./english/template/debian/release_info.wml, so no need to
change the index file, when the time for those change comes, just change
the tag.

I filed this as MR:
https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/webwml/-/merge_requests/944

Bug#1057288: www.debian.org: use of wml::debian::translation-check header breaks translation of "Galician"

2023-12-02 Thread Holger Wansing
Package: www.debian.org
X-Debbugs-CC: a...@debian.org

I just found (more or less by accident), that using the
wml::debian::translation-check header in wml files breaks the translation of
the word "Galician".
So this counts for all pages but English.
The result can be found on pages like

https://www.debian.org/releases/trixie/releasenotes.nl.html
https://www.debian.org/releases/trixie/releasenotes.zh-cn.html

or

https://www.debian.org/doc/user-manuals.fr.html#refcard
https://www.debian.org/doc/user-manuals.es.html#refcard

All those pages have a line with HTML | text | PDF links, where the
language entry at the beginning is blank.

Removing the translation-check header from the respective wml file will
make the "Galician" word appear.
(Interestingly, all other language names are correctly translated in either
way!)

My wild guess would be this being a wml issue (thus abe in CC), but I would be
more comfortable, if I could get more debugging info, like the full wml
commandline, or the like.
Don't know, how to get this though ...

I have switched trixie's release-notes to this new theme, and the result
is now visible on www.debian.org/releases/trixie/release-notes.

I noticed, that the links to the previous and next chapter at the top
and the bottom of the pages are missing.

Some research showed, that the reason for this is the sphinx version on
www-master, which is a bullseye system.
Starting with the sphinx version in bookworm, those links are supported.
So this will start working, when wolkenstein will get updated to bookworm.

Moreover, I changed the Debian logo to include the document name (here:
"Release-Notes"), to have that information available on every page of the
release-notes (at the top).

I used the alabaster theme, which is the default theme in Sphinx, and
set some configuration options in conf.py, to adapt some details. That's all.

So no need to create a new theme IMO.

I also had similar thoughts in the past.

What do people think about us, when they see such a massive language
list, with absolutely stupid looking (and some wrong) entries?

"Debian is completely crazy" ?
"They are unable to or have no interest in maintaining their system well" ?

The problem would be: which do we want to display and which
not. You would need some clever logic (if this possible) or need
to maintain a list by hand. Which would be an unthankful job,
and it costs time.

That's an issue indeed ...

"Users, who do not speak English (very well)" ???

This is a page specific for translators, and the workflow in Debian is
"translate from English to ".

So, we should expect that every person viewing this page is capable of
reading/speaking English!

Therefore, I propose to remove all translations of these pages! It is enough,
if they are only existing in English.

That would reduce the amount of pages from 9400 to 580 without losing anything.

Hi,

I'm have no experiences regarding design or CSS or the like, but I have
created some sort of a proposal for this, using an adapted alabaster theme.

See

The used conf.py can also be found there for reference.

While it looks good IMO on laptos, PC etc., it does not on a small
screen like on smartphones, because the sidebar gets unvisible.

Maybe someone can help with that?

Time for a status update:
Since the new release-notes itself are now being built on www-master (based
on Sphinx), some changings were needed for the webpage (currently
www.debian.org/releases/testing/releasenotes), because we no longer have
separate release-notes for the different release-archs.

I did that yesterday, let's say as a proposal.

Previously, there was some sort of black magic (or maybe it's perl),
which automatically creates a table with all architectures, languages,
and output formats of the r-n.
Changing this mechanism to leave out the architecture part is out of my
skills, but I managed to copy (and adapt) the logic which is being used in
the debian.org/doc part of the website, to generate the list of available
languages and formats for the different manuals there.

It looks fine IMO, and it also works. However new languages are not
displayed automatically, so compared to the old mechanism there might
be some handwork needed at some point (but rare I guess).

@webmaster, @release-team, @ddp-team: what do you think? Would this
proposal be acceptable to you for the new release-notes (trixie and later)?

I understand Thomas' approach to clean up the list of bugs for the team.
There is no point of keeping reports which are lying in the BTS for 10
or more years IMO.
They are just filling up the bug list, making it difficult to see the real
issues.

OTOH there are always people supporting the other view, pointing to
the "Debian does not hide its problems" rule. (That was my
experience in the d-i team, too.)

It's an unthankful job.

The main problem is the lack of manpower, in most teams. The
rest are only nuances.

Recently I disovered a project (it's part of Lineage OS, an open
source smartphone OS, powering my Fairphone), where cases
are closed automatically, when there is no activity for more than 3
months...
Maybe a bit fast, but probably it shows the reality:
either people are working on the issue immediatley, or never.

The solution could be, to set them wontfix, but where is the real difference
then?

Debian RT - please install sphinx build dependencies on wolkenstein.debian.org

2023-10-05 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello DSA

The migration of the release-notes to restructedText / Sphinx is ongoing, and
to be able to build the new sphinx-based release-notes on www-master, we
need some more packages to be installed there.

I'm attaching a patch for the debian.org-www-master.debian.org
dependencies including the new dependencies.

Kind regards,

I expect the build time to be reduced dramatically (rughly ~ 1/9, due to
building only one arch instead of nine), but I have no definite values,
expecially not for the run on www-master.

thanks for the hint.

However, there is nothing the webpage people can do about this in the first
instance, because the Debian package "harden-doc" (this is the package which
holds the Securing Debian manual) does not contain any txt or pdf file for
the manual.
As a consequence, they cannot be displayed on the webpage as well :-(

So, this has to be fixed in the package first.

Another point, why that makes sense:
on the main page https://www.debian.org, the link to

So people are pointed to the support page, when they look for documentation.

Severity: minor

https://www.debian.org/doc/ddp.en.html says under "Documentation Policy":

"We use Docbook XML for our documents."

Since some documents (Debian Policy, Developers Reference) have been migrated
to Sphinx/restructuredText alredy, can this be considered as the new recommend?

If so, the text should be updated to something like

"We use restructuredText or Docbook XML (deprecated) for our documents."

I have added an entry to update packages.debian.org for the search interface
(update mapping of codenames to stable|testing|unstable; much hardcoding of
codenames there:-( )

Feel free to remove or change that, if you think it should be listed at a
different place or similar
(it's also listed on release-managers list btw)

https://www.debian.org/distrib/ is like this for ages, nothing has changed.
I guess this is to save bandwidth on cdimage mirrors? (it's only DVD and BT
images, which are BT-only; there are direct download links for netinst images)

This is fixed in the meantime; I guess you watched a cached version of the
page or the page rebuild wasn't ready at that time (I encountered similar this
morning).

That's correct, there are some things to update:
- netinst images are now much larger due to included firmware,
150-300 MB is no longer correct.
- multi-arch netinst images are no longer being built

There is no force to translate every file, right?

If a consultant does not work internationally, but only in bis own
country, it could be sufficient for him to say: no need to translate

Fwd: Debian 's webpage for Samba

2023-02-25 Thread Holger Wansing
Package: samba
Severity: wishlist

Turning this into a bugreport against samba.
(The package is responsible for the package description, not the webpage).

 Ursprüngliche Nachricht

Betreff: Debian 's webpage for Samba

The webpages describing the samba packages in Debian has a somewhat misleading
first sentence - it says that samba can function as an "NT4-style domain
controller" which implies that it cannot perform as an Active Directory domain
controller, which of course it can since version 4. Clearly this sentence was
missed when the package was updated from version 3.

Thanks,

Bug#1030009: www.debian.org: addition of non-free-firmware for bookworm and higher

I have already updated several of files you listed (those which changings
were most likely non-debatable), but now I would like to discuss, what to
do with files like

releases/bullseye/debian-installer/index.wml
releases/bullseye/errata.wml
releases/buster/debian-installer/index.wml
releases/buster/errata.wml

Those old release pages have a warning hint like

If any of the hardware in your system requires non-free firmware to be
loaded with the device driver, you can use one of the tarballs of common
firmware packages or download an unofficial image including these non-free
firmwares. Instructions how to use the tarballs and general information
about loading firmware during an installation can be found in the
Installation Guide.

unofficial images with firmware included - daily builds

unofficial images with firmware included - weekly builds

First I thought we can leave this completely untouched, since these
"images with firmware included" are still there and they are also still
useful (for some hardware at least), if one wants to install those old
releases.
But now I would like to propose, we change the "unofficial images with
firmware included" phrase, since they are no longer *unofficial* according
to the non-free-firmware GR.
Thus I propose to change this into "special images with firmware included"
for those old releases.

Comments?

Looking at
https://www.debian.org/MailingLists/index.en.html#subunsub
it has to be -request@l.d.o

And furthermore:

'subscribe' has to be in the subject!
Not more, and not in the body, as mentioned on the Arabic page.

Also, the mentioned Arabeyes project page seems dead...

Tons of News html files under www.debian.org

2022-02-03 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi all,

while looking for the build status of the latest installation-guide upload
for the website, I found hundreds of News html files residing directly under
www.debian.org, starting from 1997 until 01.06.2018.

Below a loose excerpt of those (1 per year):

www.debian.org/19970301.en.html
www.debian.org/19980101.en.html
www.debian.org/19990212.en.html
www.debian.org/2116.en.html

www.debian.org/20080726.en.html
www.debian.org/20090730.en.html
www.debian.org/20100806.en.html
www.debian.org/20110515.en.html
www.debian.org/20120706.en.html
www.debian.org/20130809.en.html
www.debian.org/20141020.en.html
www.debian.org/20150110.en.html
www.debian.org/2016060402.en.html
www.debian.org/20171007.en.html
www.debian.org/20180310.en.html
www.debian.org/20180601.en.html

They can be found on wolkenstein under /srv/www.debian.org/www and have
all been created on 02. or 04. June 2018.

I guess there was some build script for the website completely going crazy
and thus causing this.

If someone has a high interest of keeping those files, please shout :-)))
Otherwise I will delete them from wolkenstein shortly.

Hmm, it still did not work on wolkenstein.
However, it worked on my laptop yesterday, hr.

My best guess for this is, that this might be caused by a different version
of wget (or some other tool involved), since I'm running Bullseye here on
my laptop, and wolkenstein still has Buster.

I implemented one more change, should work now (fingers crossed).
