I have just upgraded a few servers, and frankly I would recommend
upgrading with apt-get instead of aptitude. As aptitude's own upgrade
path is broken, it is proposing insane upgrade scenarii unless you do as
described in the release notes - which comes down to basically removing
half of your system. Besides, apt-get dist-upgrade worked at once on a
machine with a full KDE+GNOME installation, plus some services.

 Hi!

I saw the Debian TODO list at http://www.debian.org/devel/todo/;, and
you're the contact person for having things added to it.

I'm sorry, but to avoid dispersion, I have stopped doing WWW stuff. I'm
forwarding this email to the appropriate people.

BTW, could you guys change the contact email? You can also remove me
from the webwml group.

I also wonder whether this list is needed anymore. There is a wiki now,
which is a more suitable place for such listings.

What's required for getting things onto that list?

I think the following Ubuntu specification would be good for Debian
(as well as Ubuntu where the spec is coming from):
 https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/automated-problem-reports

 From the abstract:

Crashes of userspace applications, as well as packaging related
failures, should be detected automatically so the user gets an easy to
use frontend for adding information to the problem report and is
offered to send the report to our database. This also involves
providing debug symbols to automatically generate good backtraces.

A more in-depth description of a suggested implementation is available here:
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AutomatedProblemReports

Ubuntu isn't putting any resources into this, so there won't be any
double work done if this was implemented for Debian.

   Cheers //Johan

Yes, it seems to play a key role in the project. Quoting the author of
the page, Erich Schubert (I hope that he doesn't mind):

It's been added to the list, it will show up on the next mirror pulse.

To force favicon.ico we need a

some browsers (such as Opera 7) only fetches the icon if explicitly
linked. Some will probably go for favicon.ico no matter what you write
there, though. Explicitly linking to /favicon.ico and making sure it
exists would probably work fairly well.

Yes, using hardcoded paths such as /favicon.ico is a bad thing anyway.
The recommended syntax in the W3C guidelines is to use a link tag.
Furthermore, we should use a .png icon instead of a proprierary format.

If it is a perl script, you should consider integrating it in a WML

make it much easier to translate.

I know. The problem is that without pointing to the english dir, a
translation that does *not* have all the entries fails completely to
 show anything.

Maybe it would be better to run a script when *English* is updated :
- copy all the new entries to the languages directories,
- remove all obsolete entries in the languages directories,
- sync modified entries which are not translated (maybe they should be
tagged with a # English on the first line, or such),
- i believe the modified entries will already be tagged as such for
languages which have them translated.

General to-do page

2002-08-29 Thread Josselin Mouette
Recently, the idea of a general to-do page for Debian, summarizing what
tasks or teams need help, has been brought up on debian-private.
I have done a prototype of such a page, which you can see at
http://people.debian.org/~joss/need_help.en.html
The files I added/modified in the website sources are in
http://people.debian.org/~joss/webwml : you will see that it should be
easy to add/remove items on this list, thus even if some items are meant
to stay for a while, we could use it for short-term items.

Raphaël Hertzog suggested to put this page in the developer's corner,
and I think it would be nice.
What do you think of the idea ?
