Hi!

[cc list stripped down, my answer is only relevant to debian-www]
Btw., no need to Cc me and mail to debian-www; I read debian-www, so
mailing there is sufficient. I am not sure about you, though.

Of course. And I guess it will be done. But it can't reasonably done
without Craigs help and assistance to setup redundancy.

If you say which links (including mailto: ones) are broken we
(debian-www) can resolve it. Unless they are in the vendors *list* (not
the whole page, only the list itself).

Any hint on broken links would be appreciated, and that is not limited
to the vendors pages. About adding new vendors: Like I said I don't know
on which host the database is running (I think I remember it is one
Craig runs himself) so that part is out of reach.

, if you want to help
with the website. There are of course other things that need attention
too, not only the website. But I am not sure where to point you
additionally because I don't know your skill level.

Thanks for the reply. I noticed this problem earlier. There should

If your policy allows, I can maintain the page by checking the links

I'm sorry, then. Would have been a good idea to mention it in the first
place to avoid such answers, you just said you sent mail to "some
addresses"...

From what I know Craig Small is the only person able to change the data
from which the vendors page is generated. It might be that he currently
doesn't have that much time -- after all we are all just volunteers. I
know that it would be a good idea to have some "backup" for Craig so
others might be able to help in cases where he is absent (might be in
case of vacation, illness or whatever), and I guess eventually it will
happen. It isn't there currently, though, sorry (at least AFAIK -- from
looking at the getvendors.pl it seems that it gets the data from a
PostgreSQL database, but I have no idea where that runs and who else
might have write access).

It's like this: I could add it by hand to the file, but that wouldn't
help you much because it would be overwritten again because its not in
the database.

Sorry that I can't help you any further here.

I have read it 100 times and tried to contact all the people I could
think of helping me. This is what I send earlier to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I am the maintainer of http://linux.mejokj.com which distributes cds of
Linux distributions -INCLUDING DEBIAN, of course and Open Source
Software in India. This is my third mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] asking
them if it is possible to list me in the Debian cd vendors page(
http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/ ) and I haven't got a response from
them yet. Infact, there's just one cd vendor in India listed and they
are selling Hurd based cds only, which is difficult to install for an
average user. I tried sending a mail to them but it bounced back.

Thanks and regards,
Mejo

This is the information required to get listed in the Debian Cd vendor
page( http://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/adding ) :

   * Vendor Name - Linux.Mejokj.com
   * URL of Vendor - http://linux.mejokj.com
   * Whether or not you donate some of the sale to Debian- I would like
to do that, but I don't know to.
   * Type of CDs sold (see at the top of page for details) - Official
 Debian 1386 binary
   * Country you are in - India
   * Do you ship orders overseas ("yes", "no", "some areas" or "within
 Europe")- Yes
   * URL of a web page that has information about your Debian CDs -
 http://linux.mejokj.com/debian.htm
   * Email address for sales enquiries - [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   * What architectures your CDs are for. - i386 only.

I'll leave this to someone else. (Haven't CVS checked out that part of the
website.)

At the moment, only unofficial DVD images for the "unstable"
release and official ones for the "testing" release can be
  downloaded.

OK, removed the reference to cdimage-unofficial.debian.net. The first
bullet looks OK to me like that, so I've added another bullet about testing
images:

If a Debian port to a new architecture exists, but has not
yet been released officially, CD images may or may not be
available. Again, see the "Debian on CD" page - in
contrast to stable images, only one download option may be
supported, so have a look at both the "jigdo" and "HTTP/FTP"
  sections.

> In "The software on the official CDs is outdated - why don't you release a
> new version?" section: the last paragraph should be rewritten to let people

Right - that paragraph was written when only Attila made testing snapshots.
But being lazy, all I did was remove the "unofficial": ;-)

Alternatively, try out the CD images of "testing"
that are generated automatically every week. However, note that
there is no support for security problems for "testing" -
in extreme cases, several weeks can go by before security holes
are fixed. Do not use "testing" for servers!

Changed.

This short list of "see below"/"only with jigdo" is there because you can
tell from the access logs that most people go straight to the "HTTP/FTP"
page without reading the rest of the CD/DVD-related info. If the list
weren't there, those people would not be aware that some types of images
are only available via jigdo.

I've added an extra item for official testing DVD images. I've also removed
the info "all arches"/"i386 only" because it is out of date.

> More enfasis on the official images, even though the only ones we have

TBH, I'm a bit ashamed of the state of the netinst page. We have
- a couple of unofficial, fairly outdated images
- official, but still quite beta images

There is no "end-user support" for either of these - AIUI, the beta
installer netinst images are really just to test out the new installer, and
the debian-boot folks will not be delighted to answer mails of first-time
Linux users having trouble.

So IMHO at the moment telling people to use the netinst images is not
advisable because quite a few users will be frustrated by the current state
of things. Just my 2¢€...

Done.

Cheers,

  Richard
