Bug#881727: django-allauth: Invalid character reference 138 in "Last Translator" field in some .po files

This produces "Tidy Validation" warning messages when building the Debian website pages: *** /srv/www.debian.org/www/international/l10n/po/es.fr.html line 1008 column 412 - Warning: replacing invalid numeric character reference 138 *** /srv/www.debian.org/www/international/l10n/po/pt_PT.fr.html line 176 column 418 - Warning: replacing invalid numeric character reference 138 *** /srv/www.debian.org/www/international/l10n/po/sv.fr.html line 806 column 413 - Warning: replacing invalid numeric character reference 138 *** /srv/www.debian.org/www/international/l10n/po/tr.fr.html line 845 column 412 - Warning: replacing invalid numeric character reference 138 That are sent daily or weekly to the corresponding translation coordinators in Debian, and some Debian website team members. I'm attaching a diff that hopefully fixes the problem, using the correct UTF-8 character. (Meanwhile this issue is fixed, I'll disable the tidy check for the affected languages in the Debian website build scripts). Andrei Popescu: Do we need to preserve those or can we just put the characters there. The Romanian pages use UTF-8 for encoding. You should be able to just use the characters right away. The entities are probably there because the contents was migrated from the old system, where strings were stored in the template .wml files. But it looks very ugly with the current CSS file and hebrew. The first step is to get the pure translation of this page committed. Adjustments to fit your needs are of course always possible. It's also preferred if necessary changes are implemented in a general way so that also other RTL translations profit from it. Nevertheless it would be a great help if you could provide a patch/hint how to fix it in CSS, ... I have some suggestions that will be relevant also for other RTL languages. Many hebrew users don't really know the translation, which is נתיב and I think it would be very cumbersome for them to use this word anyway. It's the same with many words in hebrew, we use telephone and television without translation and everybody understand (in these cases we do write the words in hebrew...). So maybe a better example would be FBI, everybody knows what it is but no body bothers translating The Federal Buro of Investigations, and if they did it would look wierd. Hence often you would find in Hebrew texts english abrevations such as NASA, FBI, NSA, ABS and so on with technical stuff. I don't know gettext indeep, but is there a posibility to have the _old_ string also included as comment with the fuzzy string? That way it is easy to see the differences (or even run it through (w)diff for oneself). If it is not possible to do it with the general gettext tools might it be possible to implement it for our webwml po files at least? When I look at the statistics for a particular po file (eg countries) it says that there are 4 fuzzy messages and 6 untranslated but the file I have is a complete translation. Do I miss something ? George

The problem with current WML is that streams are bytes and not characters, this is why 0x5C bytes have to be escaped. I am preparing a character oriented version, but there are major backward compatibility problems. It means that any single file must contain only one encoding, some files have to be fixed under webwml. Big5 is a bit problematic since it allows non-highbit characters as trail bytes, similar to the problems with ISO 2022-JP. A stateful string scanner is required to handle it properly. Instead of escaping some problematic characters, a better solution could be to perform encoding conversions (as with Japanese files) to a safe encoding. For example, translate the link or the name of the program. IMO the right fix here is to implement the $ stuff in perl's %s so that we can use it like we can use it in C programs, but hey... -- 2. IMO the right fix here is to implement the $ stuff in perl's %s so that we can use it like we can use it in C programs, but hey... There is an alternative, but I am afraid it will cause trouble, this is why I did not mention it before. In mp4h 1.3.0, there is a new printf tag which recognizes the $ stuff, so we could replace : printf ... $foo, $bar : by printf ... foo bar / But the problem is that %1 and %2 are special, they are replaced by macro attributes when it is expanded. So you cannot write define-tag fooprintf %2$s %1$s foo bar //define-tag because %1 and %2 are replaced as soon as foo is encountered, before printf is expanded. This is why I believe that multiple %s should really be avoided. Denis

Hi, AFAICT all slices have been replaced by a new scheme based on PO files. The most obvious advantage is that input files should no more contain mixed encodings. If you find input files with multiple encodings, please let me know. It is time for translators to update these PO files ;) This is straightforward: $ cvs update webwml/english/po webwml/lang/po $ cd webwml/lang/po $ make update-po Then *.xx.po files are updated, you can translate them. Commit your changes and that's all. See webwml/english/po/README for details. Some statistics are printed by running 'make stats', and will also appear on http://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats If you want to test it on your machine, you need mp4h = 1.3.0, and locales for the desired languages must have been generated. Make sure to run 'make' in your webwml/lang/po directory after editing PO files, otherwise your changes won't be taken into account. Next steps are: * split templates.pot into smaller pieces * rearrange templates files, e.g. having 2 files language_names.wml and languages.wml does no more make sense. There is a comment in common_translation.wml where this void tag is defined, it makes msgids unique (dc_faq and faq-bottom have the same English text) and thus allow translators putting different translations. Thus it is useless in translations. There are no fuzzy entries because English text is almost never changed, but if they were, run: $ cd webwml/german/po $ for f in *.po; do msgfmt --statistics -o /dev/null $f; done In PO files, fuzzy entries are marked with a line #, fuzzy and untranslated text means that msgstr is empty. Text editors often provide some PO mode to help editing these files. Last but not least, please do not yet modify PO files, or changes will be lost when I synchronize with .wml source files. Denis
