Hi!
Since a long while, even since last stable release (etch) gettext now
supports the --previous switch which would bring in the string from
which a fuzzy translation is derived from so one can much more easier
spot what's the difference. This leads to entries in the po files like
this:
#v+
#. The ddp_pkg_loc variable contains
#. a
href=http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/ddp/manuals/trunk/manuals.sgml/[package]/;[package]/a
#: ../../english/doc/manuals.defs:146
#, fuzzy
#| msgid
#| Use a href=\cvs\CVS/a to download the SGML source text for get-var
#| ddp_pkg_loc /.
msgid
Use a href=\cvs\SVN/a to download the SGML source text for get-var
ddp_pkg_loc /.
msgstr
Verwenden Sie a href=\cvs\CVS/a, um den SGML-Quelltext für get-var
ddp_pkg_loc / herunterzuladen.
#v-
The line with #| are new here and contain the string that is in sync
with the msgstr. A translator has only to spot the difference between
the two msgids and apply that to the msgstr, making it much more easier
and not overlook things like spacing changes or typo fixes and wonder
what's going on.
Does anyone have any object to apply this short patch to
webwml/english/po/Makefile:
#v+

+++ Makefile7 Apr 2008 14:04:07 -

The only change is adding the --previous switch to the msgmerge, no
other changes hidden.
Most po translation tools propably still don't support this new
addition to the po files, though they usually ignore them only. When
updating the entry the additional comment section should get removed
too, so from that area it might require a bit more carefullness from the
translators - but with added benefit, of course.
So, if there aren't any objections I'm going to commit that propably
next week if I don't forget so it doesn't stick in my local copy only.
So long,
Rhonda
