Don't know what kind of v5 you were using, then. libpam0g-dev and
libncurses5-dev are both declared as Build-Dependencies.

I do need to add libglide2-dev [i386] and have just done so, thanks.

We build more stuff by default than XFree86's source tarball is configured
to do.

FWIW, I discovered with the v4 sources that the Sources.gz listed the
.diff and .dsc files for v3, though only v4 were actually available.
Perhaps something subtle is occuring with your update.sh?

Actually, I tried building v5 earlier and this wasn't fixed for me.

Also missing was ncurses-dev and whatever provides glide.h (the latter
which I don't really want to install).

Are these things patched in for Debian? I had no problems building and
installing 4.0.1 from source.

As an aside, does anybody know if it is possible (and how) to safely
continue with a failed 'apt-get --compile source'? Building X is quite a
big time suck. The repeated unpacking and patching seems particularly
silly.

Otherwise, things are shaping up quite nicely!

A few suggestions:

1) Please send non-Debian-specific X questions to newbie@xfree86.org until
there are official Debian XFree86 4.x packages, at which time you should
use [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unless you subscribe to those lists,
please be sure to request private replies.

2) Please avoid asking sundry unrelated questions in one huge paragraph; it
makes it difficult to reply.

3) Make sure you've set up the "Modules" section of your XF86Config to get
the proper extensions loaded. It looks like you're only loading a very
few. You've got a subsection for "extmod" but you never ask it to be
loaded. I think the SHAPE extension is in the extmod module.

4) The libGLU problem is being worked out. At first XFree86 didn't build
it in their version of Mesa, now it looks like they might start. Please be
patient and keep in mind that these .debs are unstable and unofficial.

5) The tdfx driver problems were fixed in phase2v5; please test the latest
versions of these packages BEFORE reporting problems. I do actually fix
bugs.

6) Please, please, please send Debian-specific questions about the
unofficial X .debs to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The other caveats above
about mailing lists apply here. That way more than one person can help you
out, since many more people know the answers to your questions. When
XFree86 4.x .debs become official, use debian-user.

7) Please review the language at the X Strike Force regarding these .debs.
"they are for testing, not general-purpose use". The content and style of
your mail indicates to me that you are approach these packages as an
end-user, not a fellow developer who is experienced with the X Window
System and who knows how to help people fix bugs as well as find them.

8) I appreciate your patience as I (and the helpful people on debian-x)
move toward official XFree86 4.x .debs that WILL be for general-purpose
use. Having to offer private tutorials to people who send me mail directly
does not hasten this process, so please consider other avenues for
assistance before mailing me directly in the future.

Well, the issue for us is that with two upstream sources, the respective
Mesa and XFree86 origins need to provide the same things. Is a version of
Mesa coming out soon that provides all four of these libraries? (libGL +
libGLU + libOSMesa + libGlw)

As I understand it, the currently released version of Mesa doesn't provide
libOSMesa.

Only one Debian package can provide these things at a time. What we do is
have a virtual package called "libgl1" which both the mesag3 and xlibgl1
packages (will) provide. If we need make these provisions more specific it
would be good to know. :)

the GLX problem has nothing to do with the debian packaging, I had issues
with it when using XFree's binary release for testing (though I think it
didn't crop up until the 4.0.1 release IIRC).. the problem comes into play
because you're only specifying "glx", and in the directory is the "libglx.a"
installed by the regular XFree things, and also the "libglx.so" symlink to
the library NVidia provides. Care to guess which one it chooses by default?
;) here's what I've been using in my XF86Config file and everything
functions normally (just updated to the 0.9-5 release the other day, no
issues for my setup, which is just a TNT2 btw):

Load "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so"

FWIW, I've been using the phase1 debs of X4.0.1 with the 0.9.4 NVidia
drivers on a GeForce2, and haven't had any sig11's -- but the server hangs
(and the displacy is garbled, have to reboot blindly) if the line
#Load "glx"
is uncommented in XF86Config (ie, no quake3).

I've had everything work flawlessly with this setup (phase1 debs, 0.9.4
NVidia drivers) on a PCI TNT card, though. Quake3 ran decently on a
k6-300 with this card.

I'll upgrade to phase2 and 0.9.5 once my bandwidth allows me to, and see
if the GLX problem persists.

My plan was to file wishlist bug reports to have most of those packages get
recompiled with the new shlibs, after potato was released (because that
would only be asking that the maintainer has a machine running _stable_ to
recompile the package). By the time woody freezes I expected most of them
would be dealt with, and that I'd have to recompiled others myself in a
couple of NMUs.

The fact X4 has swallowed xpm* doesn't have to change that plan drastically,
actually. We could file those wishlists right now, I guess your feedbts
script could help, even.

They are not (yet) included in xfree. This will be changing soon, and i guess
the mesa maintainer did/is doing a standalone libglu package.

In the mean time and if the standalone libglu package is not yet done, just
install mesa, and copy the libglu files by hand.

This will work nicely, but lets hope a nicer solution will come soon.

Yes, it sucks. fvwm happens to be orphaned (or intented to be
orphaned) for about 10 months now. http://bugs.debian.org/68154
