If you are using a font server, you need to restart it after upgrading
 the fonts to 4.1 .

I tried that, rebooted even. Still the squares are there.

FWIW I see exactly the same thing on my Compaq Armada 1500c. 4.0.2 worked
 fine.

I found a workaround: Use dpkg-deb to extract chips_drv.o from
xserver-xfree86_4.0.3-3_i386.deb and copy it over the chips_drv.o file
that comes with the XFree 4.1 package.

Excuse me for disturbing you with my question.
But last night I upgraded my debian testing/woody,
and since fonts are bigger for example in gnome panel, gqview, twm titlebar...
I cannot arrive to fix the problem and return to previous font size.
Have you got an idea ?

Thanks

new build of XFree86 required for hurd-i386 and s390

2001-09-11 Thread Branden Robinson
[Please followup to debian-x.]

Can someone build 4.1.0-5 for these architectures? I don't have access
to unstable boxen of these kinds to do it myself.

If there are any problems with the package build, please let me know.

Quoting Branden Robinson ([EMAIL PROTECTED]):
 FAQ :(

In that case it would be good if you would mention
where this FAQ is.

This has not been mentioned before on this list and it isn't
listed in /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ either.

And he is not the only one who has been hit with this bug.
I've been hit by this as well.

It is most notable with gnome-terminal, it is not possible
to select a different font size anymore.

The gnome panel applet wanda is confused and can not scale its
text box anymore.

Using wanda or trying to select a different font size causes
the mouse to behave erraticaly and the X server to use up all
available CPU time for a while so that the machine unusable.
If the xfs-xtt is running it will also suck some percent
but the overall behaviour does not change.

Cheers
   Mike

People often think of research as a form of development -- that it's
about doing exactly what you planned, doing it on time, and doing it
with resources that you said you'd use. But if you're going to do
that, you have to know what you are doing, and if you know what you
are doing, it isn't really research.
