Throwing the hook back into the water...

In short:

At 11:18 AM 10/11/02 -0700, Bill Moseley wrote:
I'm running an up-to-date Debian Testing laptop with the XFree86 debian

I've also installed the MS TrueType package msttcorefonts, and with those
installed Opera displays some fonts (e.g. font face=Arial,Helvetica) as
the wrong fonts. Mozilla displays them correctly.

I'm not running a true type font server, but instead added to my
XF86Config-4 Files: section a line:

FontPath/usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType

So, I'm just asking for some tips how to determine where the problem is --
or if not here, where to ask about this problem.

Is there a way to log the font selections by an application and the fonts
selected by X (if that's how it works)?

Thanks,

Bug#164708: xspecs: text files contain broken escape sequences

2002-10-14 Thread Robert Bihlmeyer
Package: xspecs
Version: 4.2.1-2
Severity: normal

Some (all?) /usr/share/doc/xspecs/*.txt.gz files contain strings
like digitm. I guess there's an escape missing in front and they
are meant to be ANSI color/attribute sequences. Right now they just
make the text much harder to read.

Not that I know of, except to use something like xscope, which I plan to
package once Keith Packard has finished sorting out some licensing
issues on it.

copia tutto in Word o in Blocco Note e stampalo,
GARANTITO !!! FINALMENTE
TRADOTTA ANCHE IN ITALIANO, PER IL TUO SUCCESSO !!! UN SISTEMA CHE ANNULLA
COMPLETAMENTE TOTOCALCIO, TOTOGOL, LOTTO, ENALOTTO E LOTTERIE VARIE !!!
BASTA GIOCARE E SPRECARE SOLDI INUTILMENTE !!!

ancora a disposizione !!!
come sai CON I SOGNI NON SI RISOLVE NULLA !!! Questa e` PURA REALTA` e
succedera` anche a te nelle prossime 6 settimane, grazie all'incredibile
Hai perso I servizi speciali in onda su Raitre, Canale5 e altre
pubblicati. Gia`, come e` possibile ASSICURARE che qualcuno vinca
davvero ???
In
Totogol ???
Enalotto, lotterie Hai fatto fortuna ??? NO ???
Hai seguito

Okay, so that means you won't upload them to unstable, right?

If you were thinking about it, please don't.

Keith Packard hasn't finished hacking on fontconfig yet; I see important
changes to it in XFree86 CVS almost every day and IMO we should not
push this stuff into unstable until it's seen an upstream release.

Note however that my libxft2-dev package will divert parts of xlibs-dev,
because the libxft1 and libxft2 headers conflict. I think the best
solution to this problem is to split libxft1-dev into its own package
from xlibs-dev, and just have it and libxft2 conflict. Branden, could
 you do that?

Yeah, I can do that. I might want to bite the bullet and bust out xft
altogether.

Yes, I realize that will mean a rebuild of all packages that have shlib
depends on xlibs for libxft.

Hi all,

I'm successless trying to install X for WOODY.
Surely unusual is that WOODY is running in a virtual maschine form
VMware (latest Workstation release) on my SuSE 7.3 system. The
text-modus works complainless.
After the installation of the vmware-tools there was a little success
because for a part of a second X ran but crashed then immediately :-(((
So the attached XF86Config-4.vm file is better than the original
XF86Config file (not attached, of course after a xf86config run)).
After that no more success.

What could I do now? The search with GOOGLE in newsgroups X Debia
VMware showed that nobody found a solution (3th Aug 2002). So what now?
Please make the answer not for Debian insiders, I'm just starting; and
so far everything works.

Bug#164767: xlibs: altgr doesn't work on german keyboards with altwin:meta_win

2002-10-14 Thread David Spreen

Package: xlibs
Version: 4.2.1-2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Configuring the old meta-win behavour confuses the german keyboard layout
(alt_r doesn't act as Mode_switch and Multi_key anymore).
The following patch adds a partial modifier_keys block to
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/altwin which provides a german keyboard-layout
with the old meta_win behavour. I don't know if this is the best
way to solve the problem but it works for me.

This issue is not powerpc specific, it is related to every journaled
filesystems : regularly, the journal is flushed and a mark is issued
to say that the journal is clean from this point. For ext3, this is
 done every five seconds.

I have not noticed that with my x86 laptop but it's perhaps because the HD in my
powerpc laptop is louder.
That said I don't understand why there would be somthing to flush when
there is no activity on the system.

A new feature will be added for 2.4.20 which will allow to increase
 this delay at mount time.

The benh kernel is a 2.4.20pre9, is it already in there?

Therefore, it will be possible to use ext3 with noflushd. It is not possible
 for the moment.

Wht is the realtion between being able to increase the timeout and being
able to use noflushd?

You may find more information on this issue on the site of noflushd.

This one ?

Okay, so that means you won't upload them to unstable, right?

Right.

Keith Packard hasn't finished hacking on fontconfig yet; I see important
changes to it in XFree86 CVS almost every day and IMO we should not
push this stuff into unstable until it's seen an upstream release.

I agree. But it's useful right now, so I thought I'd make packages
available. A lot of people use Debian sid as a development platform.

Yeah, I can do that. I might want to bite the bullet and bust out xft
 altogether.

I think that makes sense.

Yes, I realize that will mean a rebuild of all packages that have shlib
 depends on xlibs for libxft.

Poor m68k :)

Bug#164780: [S3 Trio64V+] Problems switching back from VT

2002-10-14 Thread Kevin Shanahan
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-2

Hi,

I'm having problems with an S3 Trio64V+ card here, where the video
mode is not properly restored when switching back from a VT to X. The
switch to VT is fine, but upon switching back the screen is either
corrupted or remains blank. I tried it with three different monitors;
two gave a corrupted but recognisable picture (i.e. I could see the
cursor moving but the colours were all wrong and the whole picture
badly distorted), and the third monitor went blank when trying to
switch back to X.

It seems the server never crashed/locked up, as I was always able to
switch back to a VT from the corrupted screen and/or kill X with
ctrl-alt-backspace. It simply doesn't set up the video mode correctly
after the initial VT switch. If I don't ever switch from X to a VT,
the server is perfectly stable and usable for hours.

I've included as much system info below as possible, but please ask
for more if it is needed. I'm using Debian 3.0 (woody) with XFree86
from sid, libc6 from sarge, plus whatever other dependencies I needed.

Thanks,
Kevin Shanahan.

I'm not running a true type font server, but instead added to my

So, I'm just asking for some tips how to determine where the problem is --

Is there a way to log the font selections by an application and the fonts
selected by X (if that's how it works)?

Bug#164708: xspecs: text files contain broken escape sequences

Package: xspecs
Version: 4.2.1-2
Severity: normal

Some (all?) /usr/share/doc/xspecs/*.txt.gz files contain strings
like digitm. I guess there's an escape missing in front and they
are meant to be ANSI color/attribute sequences. Right now they just
make the text much harder to read.

Not that I know of, except to use something like xscope, which I plan to

Bug#164767: xlibs: altgr doesn't work on german keyboards with altwin:meta_win

2002-10-14 Thread David Spreen

Package: xlibs
Version: 4.2.1-2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Configuring the old meta-win behavour confuses the german keyboard layout
(alt_r doesn't act as Mode_switch and Multi_key anymore).
The following patch adds a partial modifier_keys block to
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/altwin which provides a german keyboard-layout
with the old meta_win behavour. I don't know if this is the best
way to solve the problem but it works for me.

Xmd.h arch dependency

There is an arch dependency in Xmd.h, and the diff will hopefully allow
progress toward a non-arch dependent version of this file.

Bug#164780: [S3 Trio64V+] Problems switching back from VT

2002-10-14 Thread Kevin Shanahan

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-2

Hi,

I'm having problems with an S3 Trio64V+ card here, where the video
mode is not properly restored when switching back from a VT to X. The
switch to VT is fine, but upon switching back the screen is either
corrupted or remains blank. I tried it with three different monitors;
two gave a corrupted but recognisable picture (i.e.
