I don't think this will help the situation because I have a
kernel-headers-* package already installed and it still bombs out on
apt-get build-deps. And I see that it breaks auto-building on the
sbuild, so I think you should probably leave it the way it was(IMHO).

Bug#163837: startx: hostname version is displayed

2002-10-22 Thread Josip Rodin
Hi,

The patch suggested in this bug is flawed on Debian -- startx checks for GNU
in the version string and uses hostname -f, else just hostname, which means
it's expecting the FQDN by default, and if it's GNU (a flawed presumption),
then it explicitely states it wants the FQDN.

The correct fix would be to rip out the whole block:

case `uname` in
Linux*)
if [ -z "`hostname --version | grep GNU`" ]; then
hostname=`hostname -f`
else
hostname=`hostname`
fi
;;
*)
hostname=`hostname`
;;
esac

and replace it with simply hostname=`hostname -f`, which will work properly
on all Debian systems.

(The whole block is redundant anyhow, it can be reduced significantly.)

If you want to send the patch upstream, try something like this:

hostname=`hostname`
case `uname` in Linux*)
  if hostname --help 2>&1 | grep -- -f >/dev/null 2>&1; then
hostname=`hostname -f`
  fi
  ;;
esac

That means, default to just hostname, and if it's Linux, grep for -f in the
help output -- if there's no help, we can safely assume that there'll be no
-f in the error message and the test will fail; if there's a help and no -f
listed in it, the test will fail as well. Otherwise, it'll succeed and
hostname will be set accordingly.

Uhm, I think he wanted to replace it on his own machine, not in the
distribution (otherwise "without having to be a Debian expert"
wouldn't make a lot of sense :) Which seems much more sensible. I'll
try to compile 4.2 for stable, but I'm running low on disk space, so
it might take a while.

isn't xserver-xfree86-dbg compiled without optimisations? That
would be bad on slower m68k machines.

it is really only disk space, other than that we have demand paging.
Also I strongly suspect demand paging works much better with statically
linked server because very little code from rarely used (on m68k)
modules like GL extensions will be paged in upon initialisation.
With a module loading server such modules will be mmaped and because
of the relocation a lot of the code will be paged in.

The correct fix would be to rip out the whole block:

case `uname` in
Linux*)
if [ -z "`hostname --version | grep GNU`" ]; then
hostname=`hostname -f`
else
hostname=`hostname`
fi
;;
*)
hostname=`hostname`
;;
esac

and replace it with simply hostname=`hostname -f`, which will work properly
on all Debian systems.

(The whole block is redundant anyhow, it can be reduced significantly.)

If you want to send the patch upstream, try something like this:

hostname=`hostname`
case `uname` in Linux*)
  if hostname --help 2>&1 | grep -- -f >/dev/null 2>&1; then
hostname=`hostname -f`
  fi
  ;;

 FYI.

 Some memory leaks of libX11 was fixed in XFree86 current CVS

 438. Fix some memory leaks in libX11 i18n code (#A.1314, Olivier Chapuis).

 Perhaps, it is better to merge this patch to next release (4.2.1-4)
of xfree86 debian package.

 XFree86 only provides xomGeneric.so.2 for XOM module. So, many people
should be influenced of this bug.

You'd have to persuade the Stable Release Manager to permit such a
thing, and frankly I think there is a greater chance of the Sun
reversing its course across the sky. Because he is so busy he appears
to be only permitting in security fixes and *nothing* else.

Even were he more lenient, XFree86 is a huge piece of infrastructure to
change in a point release, and should not be undertaken lightly.

Finally, in my opinion the XFree86 4.2.1 packages in unstable aren't
suitable for a stable release yet.

Does that answer your question?

I don't think so.

I'll note, however, that you should be using "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" instead of
what you're using.

Note that if GNU LibC doesn't have this locale compiled, it won't work
anyway. Xlib relies on the underlying C library for locale support.

Your desire to find and fix memory leaks is very much appreciated, but
I'd advise you to check XFree86 CVS before undertaking this project, in
the event that someone else has already plugged the leaks.

> Would you include such a libraries in the -dbg package?

Yes.  How does this look?

  * debian/control:
[...]
- Discuss Xlib's loadable modules for i18n in the extended package
  descriptions of xlibs and xlibs-dbg. In xlibs-dbg's extended
  description, give tips on how to debug the i18n modules.

 libX11 (a.k.a. Xlib) provides the low-level functionality, dealing mostly
 with the wire protocol and in terms of basic operations such as opening and
 closing the X protocol connection, creating graphics contexts, drawing
 graphics primitives such as lines, arcs, and glyphs, handling events, and so
 forth. A set of dynamically-loadable internationalization modules is also
 part of Xlib, though not in the libX11 shared object itself.

Package: xlibs-dbg
[...]
 Unstripped versions of Xlib's internationalization loadable modules are
 provided in /usr/X11R6/lib/debug/X11/locale/common. Note that if you wish
 to debug these modules, you will need to set XLOCALEDIR to
 /usr/X11R6/lib/debug/X11/locale. Also note that for security reasons,
 unprivileged users are unable to override XLOCALEDIR in this way, so you
 may have to perform your debugging of the Xlib modules as root.

As long as everything tests all right, this fix will be in the next
release.

Hi,

I had no problems running 4.1.0-17 with my G200 rev 1 AGP card but after
upgrading to 4.2.1-1 it dies immediately with a signal 11.

Bug#164742: [s3virge] Problems with Trio 3D/2X (rev 1) 86C362

2002-10-22 Thread MeDon
I've compiled xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-3 for Woody from source packages,
but sitation was even more horrible. But as you can see, I speak about
chipset 86C362, but lspci and X finds 86C368, so I've forced X to use
86C362 via Chipset "86C362" and everything's right now.

FYI that'll break auto-building; sbuild takes the first choice.

 FYI.

 Some memory leaks of libX11 was fixed in XFree86 current CVS
few days ago. Will the patch solves your problem?

 438. Fix some memory leaks in libX11 i18n code (#A.1314, Olivier Chapuis).

http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/xpert/2002-October/021687.html
http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/xpert/2002-October/021893.html

Debian Release: testing/unstable
Kernel Version: Linux lissie 2.4.19 #1 Thu Aug 22 21:43:27 JST 2002 i686 AMD

Versions of the packages xlibs-dbg depends on:
hi libfreetype6 2.1.2-5FreeType 2 font engine, shared library files
ii libc6 2.3.1-3GNU C Library: Shared libraries and Timezone
ii xlibs 4.2.1-3X Window System client libraries

Some i18n related libraries included are located under
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common/.
However, corresponding unstripped libraries do not present in the "xlibs-dbg"
package.

I'm suspecting that there's some memory leaks in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common/xomGeneric.so.2
and need a debugging version of the library.

Would you include such a libraries in the -dbg package?

Those packages are unofficial and even the guy who built them won't
support them. At least if they're the ones I think they are.

I don't think so.

I'll note, however, that you should be using "it_IT@euro" instead of
what you're using.

Note that if GNU LibC doesn't have this locale compiled, it won't work
anyway. Xlib relies on the underlying C library for locale support.

Well, it didn't help that I wasn't depending on a real package to help
apt out.

xfree86 4.2.1-4 will B-D on "kernel-headers-2.4.19-386 |

You're correct. I apologize for the oversight.

Your desire to find and fix memory leaks is very much appreciated, but
I'd advise you to check XFree86 CVS before undertaking this project, in
the event that someone else has already plugged the leaks.

> Would you include such a libraries in the -dbg package?

Yes.  How does this look?

  * debian/control:
[...]
- Discuss Xlib's loadable modules for i18n in the extended package
  descriptions of xlibs and xlibs-dbg. In xlibs-dbg's extended
  description, give tips on how to debug the i18n modules.
  * debian/xlibs-dbg.debugfiles: ship unstripped versions of Xlib's i18n
modules in /usr/X11R6/lib/debug/X11/locale/common.

Package: xlibs
[...]
 libX11 (a.k.a.

As long as everything tests all right, this fix will be in the next
release.

Okay, for m68k I will make x-window-system core depend on
xserver-xfree86-dbg instead of xserver-xfree86.

I beseech you to help debug and fix the XFree86 module loader on m68k.
The static server's massive size -- especially unstripped -- is more
strongly felt on m68k boxen than on most other Debian architectures.

Hi,

I had no problems running 4.1.0-17 with my G200 rev 1 AGP card but after
upgrading to 4.2.1-1 it dies immediately with a signal 11.

After just upgrading XF86, X no longer starts. It complains about
"bad mode clock/interlace/doublescan" and accepts no resolution.
There were no changes to the config file at the time of the update.
This is with a Matrox G200. XFree86.log is appended.

Bug#165899: xlibs-dbg: no unstripped libs for /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common/*

2002-10-22 Thread MINAMI Hirokazu
Package: xlibs-dbg
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: wishlist

-- System Information
Debian Release: testing/unstable
Kernel Version: Linux lissie 2.4.19 #1 Thu Aug 22 21:43:27 JST 2002 i686 AMD
Athlon(tm) Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Versions of the packages xlibs-dbg depends on:
hi libfreetype6 2.1.2-5FreeType 2 font engine, shared library files
ii libc6 2.3.1-3GNU C Library: Shared libraries and Timezone
ii xlibs 4.2.1-3X Window System client libraries

Some i18n related libraries included are located under
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common/.
However, corresponding unstripped libraries do not present in the "xlibs-dbg" package.

I'm suspecting that there's some memory leaks in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common/xomGeneric.so.2
and need a debugging version of the library.

Would you include such a libraries in the -dbg package?

regards,

currently I have to install xserver-xfree86-dbg to get a working
server. For m68k it would be better to build xserver-xfree86 with
all drivers and modules statically linked into the server.

Is that locale defined on your system - can you see it in the listing of
'locale -a'?

If not:

dpkg-reconfigure locales

If I do `export LC_ALL="C"' everything goes well.

Is there something missing in X?
