Severity: normal

TrueType fonts that are included directly to X4 via the FontPath (i.e not
via an external font server) are available from X in several different
encodings. However, the ISO 8859-13 encoding delivered from X is incorrect,
when requesting ISO 8859-13, ISO 8859-1 encoding is delivered. This happens
for all TrueType fonts.

The official Unicode encoding table for ISO 8859-13 is available from
http://www.unicode.org/Public/MAPPINGS/ISO8859/

Oh ah. Is that marking visible in any publicly-readable file?

Okay. I agree that the information is useful, but it's less clear that
the message in question won't "hold up" a package's progress into
testing.

I had the impression -- perhaps mistaken -- that "valid candidate"
wouldn't have shown up anyway.

I'm not, but it looks like mutt's "group reply" isn't clever enough to
add me to the Mail-Followup-To field without debian-x being explicitly
listed as a mailing list.

auric:/org/ftp.debian.org/testing/data/testing/Bugs

The relevant line is "xutils 1" -- ie, xutils in testing has 1 RC
bug. Those numbers are rough and inaccurate, and shouldn't be relied
upon too heavily.

Yup, it was mistaken. "Maintainer: Branden Robinson", "14 days old (needed
10 days), "Depends: foo bar" and "baz (source, i386) is (less) buggy!"
are all examples of lines that'll show up in update_excuses without
preventing the package from being considered as a valid candidate.

Cheers,

I will not. It is too hard to read on black, especially when using
small fonts where the stroke width in glyphs is only one pixel.

/etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color is a conffile. If you don't like it,
change it.

The following line in etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config is missing a colon:

I do not know what the effect of the missing colon is; I have not tried to
start xdm without it. But the syntax for declaring X resources in the X(7x)

The precise syntax for resources is:

Bug#167642: xdm: missing colon in xdm-config

2002-11-03 Thread Matthew Swift
Package: xdm
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The following line in etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config is missing a colon:

  DisplayManager.authDir/var/lib/xdm

I do not know what the effect of the missing colon is; I have not tried to
start xdm without it. But the syntax for declaring X resources in the X(7x)
man page requires the colon:

The precise syntax for resources is:

[...]
   ResourceSpec  =3D WhiteSpace ResourceName WhiteSpace ":" WhiteSpace=
 Value
[...]

Hmmm... better check that. :-)

If it's a powermac try benh kernel. Don't select support for VGA
console. And configure then the Xfree86 4.2.1-3 (from unstable) for
using the framebuffer as driver.

Nvidia doesn't makes drivers or sources for linux with ppc

Nope, it's a Pentium 4 based architecture.

I didn't think this machine would have so much trouble out of the box.

Btw, please remove this color definition:

*VT100*color4: DodgerBlue1

Color4 is used by many applications as foreground color, and I do not
know any person that likes it.

Help getting X server working?...

2002-11-03 Thread Nathanael Nerode
I've installed debian testing on a beautiful new machine, with an NVIDIA
Quadro 4 video card, and a Dell 1702FP monitor (LCD), connected with
the digital interface. Naively attempting to set up XFree86, I get the
error that it "can't find a valid framebuffer device". (?!) Log from
'startx' follows. Any hints anyone?

solved be coping cz/sk layouts from xlibs_4.1.0-16(woody).

Upstream decided to put the cz and sk symbols files back into a single
file, "czsk".

/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/czsk

You have a variety of choices in this file:

us_sk_qwerty
us_sk_qwertz
sk_us_qwerty
sk_us_qwertz
us_sk_prog
sk_us_prog
us_cz_qwerty
us_cz_qwertz
cz_us_qwerty
cz_us_qwertz
us_cz_prog
cz_us_prog

These give you a choice between having US/ASCII as you default group,
versus Czech or Slovak. Also, as you can see, you can choose among
QWERTY, QWERTZ, or "programmers'" key layouts.

Here are some examples of usage:

$ setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc101 -symbols "czsk(us_cz_qwerty)"
$ setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc104 -symbols "czsk(sk_us_prog)"
$ setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc105 -symbols "czsk(cz_us_qwertz)"

(You should be able to use the -layout flag instead of -symbols, but the
XFree86 rules file isn't written to properly recognize that usage.)

No, I use

*Scrollbar.thickness: 10
*Scrollbar.background: grey
*Scrollbar.foreground: black

and this doesn't override what is in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults.

Thomas Dickey recommends not to put additional stuff into system files.

Bug#167605: xfs should have configurable pid file

2002-11-03 Thread Nikita V. Youshchenko
Package: xfs
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

In current xfs package, pid file is hardcoded to /var/run/xfs.pid.
Hardcoded pid file leads to problems if more than one font server should
run (e.g. one providing unicode fonts for fast clients, and another one
not providing unicode fonts for slow clients).

The following patch adds -pid option for xfs that may be used to change
pid file.

Hmmm... better check that. :-)

If it's a powermac try benh kernel. Don't select support for VGA
console. And configure then the Xfree86 4.2.1-3 (from unstable) for
using the framebuffer as driver.

Nvidia doesn't makes drivers or sources for linux with ppc

Nope, it's a Pentium 4 based architecture.

I didn't think this machine would have so much trouble out of the box.

Review the scope of the Debconf XFree86 X server configuration management

That's a decision that XFree86 upstream made for me, really.

Any hints anyone?

after upgrading to xlibs 4.2.1-3 (sarge)
I noticed it refused to
setxkbmap -layout to cz/cz_qwerty/sk/sk_qwerty/czsk

other layouts were ok

solved be coping cz/sk layouts from xlibs_4.1.0-16(woody).

I'm running kernel 2.4.18 on i686 AMD Athlon(tm) with libc6 2.2.5-14.3

Upstream decided to put the cz and sk symbols files back into a single
file, "czsk".

/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/czsk

You have a variety of choices in this file:

us_sk_qwerty
us_sk_qwertz
sk_us_qwerty
sk_us_qwertz
us_sk_prog
sk_us_prog
us_cz_qwerty
us_cz_qwertz
cz_us_qwerty
cz_us_qwertz
us_cz_prog
cz_us_prog

These give you a choice between having US/ASCII as you default group,
versus Czech or Slovak. Also, as you can see, you can choose among
QWERTY, QWERTZ, or "programmers'" key layouts.

Here are some examples of usage:

$ setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc101 -symbols "czsk(us_cz_qwerty)"
$ setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc104 -symbols "czsk(sk_us_prog)"
$ setxkbmap -rules xfree86 -model pc105 -symbols "czsk(cz_us_qwertz)"

(You should be able to use the -layout flag instead of -symbols, but the
XFree86 rules file isn't written to properly recognize that usage.)

No, I use

*Scrollbar.thickness: 10
*Scrollbar.background: grey
*Scrollbar.foreground: black

and this doesn't override what is in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults.

Thomas Dickey recommends not to put additional stuff into system files.

Bug#167605: xfs should have configurable pid file

2002-11-03 Thread Nikita V. Youshchenko
Package: xfs
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

In current xfs package, pid file is hardcoded to /var/run/xfs.pid.
Hardcoded pid file leads to problems if more than one font server should
run (e.g. one providing unicode fonts for fast clients, and another one
not providing unicode fonts for slow clients).

The following patch adds -pid option for xfs that may be used to change
pid file.

That's a decision that XFree86 upstream made for me, really.

Re: Configuration file handling (Re: [desktop] Unix configuration nightmare)

2002-11-03 Thread Matt Zimmerman
So I got to prototyping this, just to play around with it and see what
worked. Then I was reading a thread on debian-mentors about Apache
configuration, and I remembered how much of a pain that is currently. It
occurred to me that a merging system could perhaps be used to make this
sane. I'd like to think about this a bit and see if it affects any design
decisions, so that this could be supported in the future at least. The
basic idea would be for the package to modify a copy of the saved config
file, rather than basing its modifications on the installed file. Example:

- Package P wants to add a stanza to /etc/shared.conf
- P asks for a copy of /etc/shared.conf to modify; we give it the installed
  copy
- P makes its modifications and provides the resulting config file
- We present the result as a proposed config file merge, as in the simple
case discussed in previous messages in this thread
- We store /etc/shared.conf as the "last known" revision for P
- we apply the changes

...time passes...

- A new version of package P comes along and wants to apply the same changes
to /etc/shared.conf, not knowing if they are already present
- P asks for a copy of /etc/shared.conf to modify, we give it the "last
  known" revision
- P finds its changes already present, and no changes are made

...time passes, the admin decides he needs to change something that was
added by P, and does so...

- A new version of package P is installed. the above scenario repeats; it
knows that it has already added its changes, without regard for whether
they are actually present in the current /etc/shared.conf. The admin's
changes are preserved, and disaster averted.

...time passes, and package P's needs change...

- A new version of package P needs to make a different change to
/etc/shared.conf, perhaps even one overlapping with the old change
- P asks for the "last known" revision of /etc/shared.conf, applies its
  changes
- We attempt to merge those changes into /etc/shared.conf. If they do not
overlap with the admin's changes, then we present the result as a merge.
If they do overlap, then a conflict results, and we resolve it as for the
  usual case.
- We apply the changes requested by P to the "last known" revision,
indicating that they have been resolved. Future releases of P find their
changes already applied, and are satisfied.

Similar actions would take place independently for each package which
modifies the configuration file. Each package would be modifying its own
view of the config file as it last saw it, and the changes merged into the
installed version. Each new change made by the package only needs to be
resolved once

This scheme would provide for shared configuration files with the same user
experience as configuration files which are owned by a single package. The
only implementation detail is that we keep track of a separate revision of
the config file for each package which modifies it. This does not seem like
a high price to pay.

This leads into a continuation of the question of how to store these files.
Warn me now if using RCS in this application would bother you, because it's
starting to look like it might be a good fit.

I would like to help testing patches, just give me them and the source
of Xfree86 which compiles and works on my machine (or instructions to
compile properly the source, I know C and I'm learning C++ this year).

I have a macintosh and I would like to help the linux comunity.

Government convinces Her Gracious Majesty's Subjects to join the Euro
Zone. (I'm told that there's a beggar in front of Waterloo terminal
in London with the sign ``Euro accepted -- Pound preferred.'')

In the short term, en_US.ISO8859-15.

In the longer term, en_US.UTF-8.

Note that you'll probably need to generate these locales yourself.
man locale-gen.

Absolutely. The long term plan is to completely decouple the locale
(a set of cultural and political preferences) from the character
encoding. Thus, we hope that someday a Debian system will have UTF-8
locales only.

Our student labs have US keyboards. The second thing we teach our
