Keith, I understand you wanting to drive a stake through the foul heart
of the traditional X font system in favor your far superior fontconfig
system, but won't someone *please* think of the children?

Er, that is, distributions who don't ship XFree86's CVS HEAD and call it

Well, first, how does your Speedo fonts directory differ from what is
shipped by xfonts-scalable?

That, or xftcache shouldn't be failing.

Since it's not segfaulting, that would be premature.

How does your Speedo fonts directory differ from what xfonts-scalable
ships?

Bug#170749: xfonts-scalable: runnxftcache in Speedo directory fails

2002-11-26 Thread Jeffrey Baker
I had this very same problems, which I traced to my
installation of Xft and Fontconfig from fontconfig.org. I
got rid of those, and everything was peachy. The solution
was to remove Xft2 and Fontconfig, as those are incompatible
with xftcache. According to Keith Packard, xftcache is
obsolete in favor of fccache.

Search google for xftcache and speedo, many people have
reported this to various mailing lists.

Most people that configure xserver-xfree86 simple hit enter when asked:
Use kernel framebuffer device interface?

This causes nothing but problems. I've seen it cause X to report the
usual "no screens found" with nvidia, ati, and matrox cards. It
probably breaks many others too.

There is no reason that I can see for that question to ever default to
yes. All I have ever seen is it cause X to not function for countless
users. It is probably the single biggest cause for X to not work after
configuration.

Please change it to false by default.

I've attached an updated version of your patch, which applies to

xftcache is obsolete; use fc-cache instead.

I'm having the same problem, and have been since 4.2.1-3. Have tried
what was suggested with #117225, but to no avail.

Worked around the problem once before by modifying postinst to keep from
running xftcache.

I'd be happy to "use gdb to generate a backtrace with debugging
symbols".

Thanks!

Well, my gripe was really that I now have no way to install or remove
the package, aside from manually moving the prerm script out of the
way. It seems that xfonts-scalable should have an oh shit clause.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version 4.1.0-15
Severity: grave

I upgraded to 4.1.0-15 via apt-get on Debian unstable x86 using kernel
2.4.17. Before doing so, I had a working X setup. Afterwards, the
display did not work.

The exact sequence of events was: apt-get upgrade, log out of GNOME,
restart GDM. At this point the monitor reported scan out of range.

The hardware is Radeon All-in-Wonder AGP 32MB with a Samsung SyncMaster
210 LCD display using a DVI connection. The monitor runs at 1600x1200,
and uses this exact modeline:

ModeLine "1600x1200" 129.4 1600 1630 1680 1760 1200 1201 1204 1225

When I start the 4.1.0-15, the server and GDM both start without
reporting trouble. The server claims to use the modeline shown above.
However, the monitor reports scan out of range with ridiculous
horizontal freq of 551kHz.

Here is my config file:

Bug#170749: xfonts-scalable: bug reproduced

2002-11-26 Thread Jeff Beaird
Package: xfonts-scalable
Version: 4.2.1-4
Followup-For: Bug #170749

-- System Information:
Debian Release: testing/unstable
Architecture: i386
Kernel: Linux bu2204 2.4.20-pre11 #2 Sat Oct 26 15:49:08 CDT 2002 i686
Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C

Versions of packages xfonts-scalable depends on:
ii xutils4.2.1-4X Window System utility programs

-- no debconf information

I'm having the same problem, and have been since 4.2.1-3. Have tried
what was suggested with #117225, but to no avail.

Worked around the problem once before by modifying postinst to keep from
running xftcache.

I'd be happy to "use gdb to generate a backtrace with debugging
symbols".

Thanks!

I tried the workarounds in that bug and they didn't help. I'm not sure
its the same bug because I'm not getting a segfault.

Well, my gripe was really that I now have no way to install or remove
the package, aside from manually moving the prerm script out of the
way. It seems that xfonts-scalable should have an oh shit clause.

Yes, that would be great.

Bug#170834: xserver-xfree86: UseFBDev default answer causes nothing but problems

2002-11-26 Thread Justin A
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-0pre1v1
Severity: important

Most people that configure xserver-xfree86 simple hit enter when asked:
Use kernel framebuffer device interface?

This causes nothing but problems. I've seen it cause X to report the
usual "no screens found" with nvidia, ati, and matrox cards. It
probably breaks many others too.

There is no reason that I can see for that question to ever default to
yes. All I have ever seen is it cause X to not function for countless

configuration.

Please change it to false by default.

Probably better to ask the debian-powerpc, and/or check its archives.
There have been some recent threads there involving power management.

If the conclusion of that list is that there is a bug in the X server,
I'll know, because I also read that list.

Hi, this is a FAQ.

(II) Module mga_hal: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.0.3, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.3
(II) MGA(0): Matrox HAL module used

There's your problem. Either get rid of this mga_hal_drv.o file, which
is not part of the XFree86 distribution, or upgrade to a version
compiled for XFree86 4.2.1, which, if it exists at all, should be
available through Matrox.

Powerbook crashing on wakeup only in X

2002-11-26 Thread Jeffrey Baker
Greetings all. I have a powerbook g4, first revision.
Since upgrading to 4.2.1-4 X packages last night, my
powerbook now crashes when woken up, if X is running. The
crash is unfortunately 100% reliable and happens the very
first time the book is put to sleep. This crash does not
occur at the console.

Before the upgrade, I was having intermittent crashes, but
nothing like this. I noticed there were a number of patches
to the ati driver in the latest packages. I'd like to hear
if anyone else is having trouble, and what their solution
might be.

BTW, I am not using DRI.

I was wondering if you found a patch about that. But your response is
great. Thanks.

I'll probally just backport 4.2.x to woody and integrate that i845
patch. Of course, I'll try and get it up to
www.cs.umn.edu/~sdier/debian/updates/wup/ , where I've been keeping my

X4.2 won't start for MGA driver

2002-11-26 Thread David Allen
Hello,

I just recently upgraded to XFree 4.2 (Debian testing) I can't get
xserver-xfree86 to start (which is what I should be using). I was
hoping I might find out what's going on here...some brief information,
and then my error logs:

Linux myhostname 2.4.19 #2 SMP Fri Sep 27 09:51:08 EDT 2002 i686
Pentium III (Coppermine) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
xserver-common 4.2.1-3
xfree86-common 4.2.1-3
xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-3
libc6 2.2.5-15

Graphics card is a Matrox G400 (dual head) card which normally uses
the MGA driver, and the xserver-xfree86 package
Monitor is a 21 inch OptiQuest Q115 I normally use 1152x864
resolution at 24bpp. ImPS2 mouse on /dev/psaux, using xkb with pc104
layout.

Using XFree86 4.1 in debian testing, everything worked like a charm.
Using the same XF86Config-4 file after upgrading to XFree 4.2, the
server wouldn't start. I also tried purging the configuration file
and letting debconf make me a new one, and that had the exact same
results. Attached are error logs (from /var/log/XFree86.0.log) from
both my old configuration file when starting the server and debconf
generated file. Both don't have any (WW) or (EE) lines, just the
final message "Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server
aborting".

Nothing about my configuration has changed except upgrading from XFree
4.1 to 4.2. Kernel, hardware, and other packages are all the
same. Also attached is my configuration file that I used with XFree
4.1 that no longer works. Anybody have any idea what's going on?

I can get xserver-svga running with a different configuration file,
but this is a real problem since apparently there's no hardware
acceleration, and for some reason it really distorts colors in some
applications (most notably ogle and other mpeg players) Plus with
some applications a lot more CPU gets munched using the svga server.

Any help would be appreciated. I've tried to include all the info that
would be needed, please let me know if I missed something.

Probably better to ask the debian-powerpc, and/or check its archives.
There have been some recent threads there involving power management.

If the conclusion of that list is that there is a bug in the X server,
I'll know, because I also read that list.

Hi, this is a FAQ.

(II) Module mga_hal: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.0.3, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.3
(II) MGA(0): Matrox HAL module used

There's your problem. Either get rid of this mga_hal_drv.o file, which
is not part of the XFree86 distribution, or upgrade to a version
compiled for XFree86 4.2.1, which, if it exists at all, should be
available through Matrox.

Severity inflation. Other people don't see this problem, including me.
It is, therefore, "important" at worst.

Remember: personal annoyance is not a factor in determining bug
severity.

> Versions of packages xfonts-scalable depends on:
> ii xutils 4.2.0-0pre1v2 X Window System utility programs

It might be a good idea to upgrade your xutils package. If your
xbase-clients package is similarly outdated, you may be seeing an old,
fixed bug in xftcache.

Please use up-to-date versions of packages.

Bug#170805: xfontsel crashes the X server

2002-11-26 Thread Anton Zinoviev
Package: xserver-xfree86

Hi!

I still don't use the new 4.2.0 X packages and I can not reproduce
this bug with the old 4.1.0 packages. But as they assigned important
severity I think it is worth not to wait until I can provide you with
more information.

I requested them for /var/log/XFree86.0.log. It is at the end of this
message.

Hello!

I am not sure that it is bug of xfonts-cronyx-misc and not of xfontsel
(or X server?).

The problem is following: when I call
"xfontsel -pattern -cronyx-fixed-bold-r-normal--18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1"
(or by any other way try to see fonts from xfonts-cronyx-misc package in
xfontsel), my X Window System crashes. All fonts from other packages does
not have this problem.

I can use these fonts in unicode xterm without any problems.
I can "less /etc/X11/app-defaults/XFontSel" in xterm with these fonts
without any problems.

I use unmodified /etc/X11/app-defaults/XFontSel from xbase-clients
package; if I delete from "*sampleTextUCS" line all symbols except
Latin & Cyrillic, no crash occur.

If I run xfontsel inside Xnest X server, the main X server crashes.

I am ready to tell you any other information if it is necessary.

Regards,
Alexandra.

And thank you for these fonts!

the MGA driver, and the xserver-xfree86 package

Severity inflation. Other people don't see this problem, including me.
It is, therefore, "important" at worst.

Remember: personal annoyance is not a factor in determining bug
severity.

It might be a good idea to upgrade your xutils package. If your
xbase-clients package is similarly outdated, you may be seeing an old,
fixed bug in xftcache.

Please use up-to-date versions of packages.

Bug#170805: xfontsel crashes the X server

2002-11-26 Thread Anton Zinoviev
Package: xserver-xfree86

Hi!

I still don't use the new 4.2.0 X packages and I can not reproduce
this bug with the old 4.1.0 packages. But as they assigned important
severity I think it is worth not to wait until I can provide you with
more information.

I requested them for /var/log/XFree86.0.log. It is at the end of this
message.

Severity: important

Hello!

I am not sure that it is bug of xfonts-cronyx-misc and not of xfontsel
(or X server?).

The problem is following: when I call
"xfontsel -pattern -cronyx-fixed-bold-r-normal--18-120-100-100-c-90-iso10646-1"
(or by any other way try to see fonts from xfonts-cronyx-misc package in
xfontsel), my X Window System crashes. All fonts from other packages does
not have this problem.

I can use these fonts in unicode xterm without any problems.
I can "less /etc/X11/app-defaults/XFontSel" in xterm with these fonts
without any problems.

I use unmodified /etc/X11/app-defaults/XFontSel from xbase-clients
package; if I delete from "*sampleTextUCS" line all symbols except
Latin & Cyrillic, no crash occur.

If I run xfontsel inside Xnest X server, the main X server crashes.

I am ready to tell you any other information if it is necessary.

Regards,
Alexandra.

And thank you for these fonts!
