Even if so, it's probably a different XFree86 version, and you should take this up with upstream. To add to the madness, the xmodmap line works just fine when I unplug the usb to ps-2 v-cable from which I connect an external keyboard and mouse to the laptop. This line works correctly using the builtin touchpad and mouse buttons. This may actually make sense if the touchpad is the core pointer and the external mouse isn't. xmodmap only affects the core pointer. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer \ Debian (powerpc), XFree86 and DRI developer Software libre enthusiast \ http://svcs.affero.net/rm.php?r=daenzer

On Mon, 4 Aug 2003, Debian Bug Tracking System wrote: [...] On Mon, Aug 04, 2003 at 09:49:25AM +1000, Daniel Stone wrote: No, this is incorrect. $REALSTARTUP, which may be ~/.[Xx]session, if it exists, is only executed at the *end* of the Xsession.d chain, after all the system Xsession scripts have been run. I apologize for the delay in my reply, I don't like restarting my X serverg. ~/.xsession is started at the end of the Xsession.d, that's correct. However, in that case it's up to the ~/.xsession script to select a window manager to run, i.e. the user has to duplicate the functionality of 50xfree86-common_determine-startup. Note that: * ~/.xsession does not inherit variables such as REALSTARTUP * ~/.xsession cannot just call 50xfree86-common_determine-startup because all it would get is REALSTARTUP=... ~/.xsession... again. I am closing this bug due to the above analysis. So I don't think the bug should be closed: * forcing each user to duplicate 50xfree86-common_determine-startup functionality just so he can customize his mouse acceleration or have an xterm on startup does not seem like a good solution. * there's an interoperability issue with RedHat systems (e.g. HOME shared via NFS). -- Francois Gouget [EMAIL PROTECTED]http://fgouget.free.fr/ The software said it requires Win95 or better, so I installed Linux.

Bug#204363: cleanlinks removes non-dangling symlinks to directories
Package: xutils Version: 4.2.1-6 Severity: normal Tags: upstream patch According to its manpage cleanlinks does only remove dangling symlinks and empty directories, so I'd expect it not to remove a symlink to an existing unempty directory. Bug#204378: add xdm to login square

Bug#204358: libxcursor1: This package should provide /usr/lib/libxcursor.so symlink
On Wed, 2003-08-06 at 18:21, Modestas Vainius wrote: Currently, package libxcursor-dev contains /usr/lib/libxcursor.so symlink. However, libxcursor1 should provide it, because it seems that xfree86 4.3.0-0pre1v1 needs this symlink to be able to find libxcursor library. As a result, X cursor theme support is broken without libxcursor-dev package, what shouldn't happen. libX11 should really load libXcursor.so.1, and it 'almost' does here: open(/lib/libXcursor.so.1.0, O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) stat64(/lib, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0 open(/usr/lib/libXcursor.so.1.0, O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) stat64(/usr/lib, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=81920, ...}) = 0 munmap(0x302e1000, 87322) = 0 open(/etc/ld.so.cache, O_RDONLY) = 4 fstat64(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=87322, ...}) = 0 mmap(NULL, 87322, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, 4, 0) = 0x302e1000 close(4)= 0 open(/usr/X11R6/lib/libXcursor.so.1, O_RDONLY) = 4 No idea why it looks for libXcursor.so.1.0 in /usr/lib, but creating that symlink it gets picked up. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer \ Debian (powerpc), XFree86 and DRI developer Software libre enthusiast \ http://svcs.affero.net/rm.php?r=daenzer

~/.xsession... again. I don't see why this is such a problem - why not just put in exec gnome-session or whatever? You're only going to have to write that line *once* ... I am closing this bug due to the above analysis. So I don't think the bug should be closed: * forcing each user to duplicate 50xfree86-common_determine-startup functionality just so he can customize his mouse acceleration or have an xterm on startup does not seem like a good solution. If you know what you want, it's only one line (e.g, exec startkde), which is IMO a lot better than the resulting confusion. * there's an interoperability issue with RedHat systems (e.g. HOME shared via NFS). There are a lot of things we (shock horror!) do differently.
