Bug#204343: Xfree crashes when accessing some fonts (on i830)

2003-08-06 Thread Vincent Deffontaines
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-9
Severity: important

Maybe this bugreport is alike #193529. I am not sure.

I get X crashes when using some fonts.
Here is what I exactly do to have X crash (repeatable every time, here).
1) Open kword
2) Type a text and select it
3) Click the arrow at the right of the font description, to select another
font.
4) Scroll down in the menu that has opened.
X crashes now.

I have weird fonts installed, ie fonts downloaded under some
freeware/postcardware licences, from the internet.

Attached are :
- My XF86Config setup file
- error output from the startx command where I got the crash
- XFree86.0.log

I also get these on console (from kernel, would I guess) after X has
crashed :

[drm:i830_wait_ring] *ERROR* space: 65520 wanted 65528
[drm:i830_wait_ring] *ERROR lockup
[drm:i830_wait_ring] *ERROR* space: 65512 wanted 65528

[drm:i830_wait_ring] *ERROR* space: 65496 wanted 65528
[drm:i830_wait_ring] *ERROR lockup

I will provide any other information needed.
I can also send strange fonts I have here, in case it helps, but only to
some private address, due to their licence.

I run an up-to-date sid, on kernel 2.4.20
debconf 1.3.8

1) Your bug report did not include any server output from when you
actually experience the problem summarized in the subject;

2) I cannot support the proprietary nvidia XFree86 driver module.
Please use the nv driver instead; if the problem then goes away, then
this bug will have to be closed or reassigned.

Please get back to this bug number with the above information.

Somehow, I doubt xdm upstream are going to want to fix this.

Really, use kdm (or gdm, but I don't know if it has the requisite functionality)
if you need anything more than xdm provides. What's next, a wishlist on xterm
because it doesn't do root-window-hack or tabs?

This works on a RH 6.2 machine. What's up ?

With the exact same configuration? Even if so, it's probably a different
XFree86 version, and you should take this up with upstream.

To add to the madness, the xmodmap line works just fine when I unplug
the usb to ps-2 v-cable from which I connect an external keyboard and
mouse to the laptop. This line works correctly using the builtin
 touchpad and mouse buttons.

This may actually make sense if the touchpad is the core pointer and the
external mouse isn't. xmodmap only affects the core pointer.

If so, this is probably fixed in newer versions.

After checking, (I have removed all weird fonts dirs from my

Therefore, I suppose it should be possible to reproduce this bug on a

I apologize for the delay in my reply, I don't like restarting my X
serverg.

~/.xsession is started at the end of the Xsession.d, that's correct.
However, in that case it's up to the ~/.xsession script to select a
window manager to run, i.e. the user has to duplicate the functionality
of 50xfree86-common_determine-startup. Note that:
 * ~/.xsession does not inherit variables such as REALSTARTUP
 * ~/.xsession cannot just call 50xfree86-common_determine-startup
because all it would get is REALSTARTUP=... ~/.xsession... again.

I am closing this bug due to the above analysis.

So I don't think the bug should be closed:
 * forcing each user to duplicate 50xfree86-common_determine-startup
functionality just so he can customize his mouse acceleration or have an
xterm on startup does not seem like a good solution.
 * there's an interoperability issue with RedHat systems (e.g. HOME
shared via NFS).

Addition to the bug report. Attached are three files.

1. XFree86.0.log-with-nvidia-driver
The output of the X server when I use xtt with nvidia. When server

console and locks the computer. It is not that the keyboard and mouse
are locked, but the whole computer, since I failed to ssh, telnet or ftp
to the locked computer from network (no response). Reminds me of
infamous F00F bug.

2. XFree86.0.log-with-nv-driver
The output that happens when I replace nvidia with nv in

the nVidia flash screen, then goes back to console with error messages

No devices detected.

3. XF86Config-4

Bug#204363: cleanlinks removes non-dangling symlinks to directories

2003-08-06 Thread Florian Ernst
Package: xutils
Version: 4.2.1-6
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream patch

According to its manpage cleanlinks does only remove dangling
symlinks and empty directories, so I'd expect it not to remove a
symlink to an existing unempty directory. But:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/test$ ls -Al
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx1 fernst fernst 5 2003-08-06 18:22 home -

lrwxrwxrwx1 fernst fernst 21 2003-08-06 18:22 .xinitrc

It appears the cleanlinks-script only checks for the symlinks-target
file but not for directory, so the following patch could fix it:

--- /usr/bin/X11/cleanlinks.old 2003-02-26 01:52:11.0 +0100

- if [ ! -f $i ]; then
+ if [ ! \( -f $i -o -d $i \) ]; then

rm -f $i
fi

After applying this patch:

Bug#204358: libxcursor1: This package should provide /usr/lib/libxcursor.so symlink

 Currently, package libxcursor-dev contains /usr/lib/libxcursor.so
symlink. However, libxcursor1 should provide it, because it seems
that xfree86 4.3.0-0pre1v1 needs this symlink to be able to find
libxcursor library. As a result, X cursor theme support is broken
without libxcursor-dev package, what shouldn't happen.

libX11 should really load libXcursor.so.1, and it 'almost' does here:

open(/lib/libXcursor.so.1.0, O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
stat64(/lib, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0
open(/usr/lib/libXcursor.so.1.0, O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file
or directory)
stat64(/usr/lib, {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=81920, ...}) = 0
munmap(0x302e1000, 87322) = 0
open(/etc/ld.so.cache, O_RDONLY) = 4
fstat64(4, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=87322, ...}) = 0
mmap(NULL, 87322, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, 4, 0) = 0x302e1000
close(4)= 0
open(/usr/X11R6/lib/libXcursor.so.1, O_RDONLY) = 4

No idea why it looks for libXcursor.so.1.0 in /usr/lib, but creating
that symlink it gets picked up.

  * ~/.xsession cannot just call 50xfree86-common_determine-startup
because all it would get is REALSTARTUP=... ~/.xsession... again.

I don't see why this is such a problem - why not just put in exec
gnome-session or whatever? You're only going to have to write that line *once*
...

I am closing this bug due to the above analysis.

So I don't think the bug should be closed:
  * forcing each user to duplicate 50xfree86-common_determine-startup
functionality just so he can customize his mouse acceleration or have an
xterm on startup does not seem like a good solution.

If you know what you want, it's only one line (e.g, exec startkde), which is
IMO a lot better than the resulting confusion.

  * there's an interoperability issue with RedHat systems (e.g. HOME
 shared via NFS).

There are a lot of things we (shock horror!) do differently. This is one, and
I'm standing by it.

The explanation for this is pretty simple; your video card is not
recognized by XFree86 and not supported by the nv driver, at least not
in the 4.2.1 release.

As I said, you probably need to contact NVIDIA customer support for
assistance with the unresolved symbol problem.
