Bug#168794: synaptics support in XFree86

Hmm, what's the legal situation of having the driver loaded into the
X Server at the same time as a propritary driver. Not that _I_ would
use one but I guess lots of people do these days..

As long as you don't distribute the result, there is no problem. The GPL
only bounds you when distibuting, not when using.

And since i doubt that it is even possible to distribute the running X
process which has loaded the driver module, there should be no problem.

Now, if you had a cluster or something, and process migration was a
possibility, things may be different :)))

Bug#208493: xterm: openi18n patch

2003-09-03 Thread Matt Taggart
Package: xterm
Severity: wishlist

There exists a patch for xterm openi18n support at,

http://www.openi18n.org/subgroups/utildev/dli18npatch2.html

if it's clean and accepted upstream it would be nice to have in the debian
package.

Thanks,

Bug#208500: xserver-xfree86: unuseable default modes for newport driver

2003-09-03 Thread Bernhard R. Link
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-11
Severity: minor

If choosing the newport driver, the default modes
selected are not supported by the driver. (According
to /usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86/README.newport
and the error message I get otherwise).

I guess something like

if [ $RET = newport ]; then
  DEFAULT_DEPTH=8
  DEFAULT_MODES=1280x1024

at the correct place in xserver-xfree86.config will
improve the situation a lot.

After xlibs upgraded to 4.0.1 rxvt no longer can copy 8bit characters to X
selection buffer. Pasting works fine, I can copy 8bit characters from an
xterm to a rxvt fine but if the source is rxvt only 7bit characters will
get through.

Like this:
Select 'sälää' in rxvt, paste to rxvt - 'sl'
Select 'sälää' in rxvt, paste to xterm - 'sl'
Select 'sälää' in xterm, paste to rxvt - 'sälää'

Not really a serious bug but kinda annoying for us fi_FI locale users...

(Using locale LC_ALL=fi_FI)

First I mark text in rxvt. Then I try to paste it to another rxvt,
but nothing appears. When I keep pressing middle button (paste)
something very strange characters appear (like control characters).
Pasting from other programs (Emacs, Netscape) works well, but similar
problems appear when pasting to other program from rxvt. (Marked text
in test didn't include any local 8-bit characters, only 7-bit ASCII
characters.)

Also sometimes rxvt died when pasting from it.

I don't know why Ben Collins reassigned this bug to XFree86 (he provided
no explanation to the bug logs), but this problem appears to have been
fixed for quite some time.

People are reporting success with rxvt and xlibs 4.2.1-11 (Debian
unstable).

Closing this report.

With old libc6 2.1.3 version it works without any problem
but with new one ( 2.1.94) it has a problem with locales
#echo $LANG
ru_RU.KOI8-R
#startx

something like: locale does not supported by Xlib

when I add to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias
new alias for
ru_RU.koi8r ru_RU.KOI8-R
it started to wotk correctly

who are wrong ?
you or libc6 maintainer ?

Thanx

While using 1-byte character sets where usual letters are above 127, such as
Russian character sets, mode where national alphabet is switched as Caps_Lock,
not as Shift. In XFree86 it is impossible to use Ctrl-char or Meta(Alt)-char
when in national alphabet mode - xlib just ignores modifier (not in all
applications, but only in those that relay on xlib to get character, gvim or
rxvt are examples). I'm not sure that this bug appears while not using Xkb.
The problem is actually in xlib.

I suggest applying following patch that fixes the problem:

The fix in question was applied by the time of the release of XFree86

This bug has therefore been fixed in Debian for years.

I don't exactly know when this got screwy...I have a debian unstable system
that's a year or two old and the keyboard setup has deteriorated. At first,
I just had to manually fix the backspace/delete issue (this was a minor
irritation). Now, however, my Alt key by default seems to be generating an
Alt keysym rather than a Meta keysym as is customary on PC keyboards. I've
fixed this using gdm by adding the following to /etc/gdm/Init/Default:

/usr/bin/X11/xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = BackSpace' \
 -e 'remove Mod1= Alt_L' \
 -e 'keycode 0x40 = Meta_L' \
 -e 'addMod4= Meta_L'

While this has the desired effect that emacs, etc, see my left Alt key as a
Meta key, X now ignores the left alt key so I need to make sure to use the
right Alt key to switch VTs, kill X, etc. This behaviour occurs independant
of whether I use startx or gdm to start X up. So I guess what I'm asking
is, what might have gotten messed up that would cause this behavior (I'm
pretty sure I haven't messed with any of the system-wide config files and my
setup works on all other machines, including Debian ones) and/or what should
I do to revert the configuration? The dpkg man page doesn't seem to suggest
how I would force it to reinstall ie /etc/X11/xkb (--confnew doesn't do it).
Apologies if this is confusing.

Re: 4.3 strongly desired wishlist item (XAA fix)

2003-09-03 Thread Thomas Winischhofer
This would very well fit into 4.2 as well.. just in case there is
another revision of the packages planned.

Thomas Winischhofer wrote:

2 weeks ago a fix for the pixmap cache was committed to CVS HEAD, with
the following short description:

376. Fix an XAA pixmap cache server crash that can happen in some cases
when the off-screen memory is heavily fragmented (David Dawes,
based on #5752, Koike Kazuhiko, Chisato Yamauchi).
Summarized explanation: In some sitations, if memory is fragemented in a
certain way (not neccessarily heavily), it can happen that the pixmap
cache reserves a number of 512x512 slots, no 256x256 slots, and a few
128x128 slots. The cache functions cannot deal with this, and send a
null pointer to XAATileCache(), causing calls to driver accelerator
functions with illegal coordinates. In most of the cases, this leads to
a complete machine freeze.

Since I experienced this crash frequently lately (due to implementation
of RENDER acceleration into the SiS driver), I would kindly ask the
folks packaging XFree86 for Debian to include the attached short patch.

Thanks,

Thomas

Wow, thanks. You'll also need to modify debian/copyright because the

I looked at the copyright file, and decided no modification was

Am I missing some importantant point? Including a piece of software

this, like 1), is an artifact of me converting the .po file from a
each-msg-on-a-single-line to lines 80 using regexes (I didn't want to
copy-paste all 153 messages), msgmerge doesn't notice any difference though,
 so it's purely cosmetic.

Well, diff can see the difference in the English strings.

Can you perhaps find out from other Debian l10n specialists what a good
  tool is?
heh, poedit was recommended to me by someone who has done a considerable
amount of translation work (also judging from the fact that you're first
person to complain this is rarely a problem). Anyhow I'll use kbabel in the
future untill poedit gets fixed (a bugreport has been filed).

Well, all the existing .po files wrap at 79 columns except for de.po,
which wraps at 80.

Not really sure why poedit behaved so weirdly for you.

Bug#168794: synaptics support in XFree86

2003-09-03 Thread C. Scott Ananian
I understand the licensing situation, and thanks for taking time to
ensure that. But googling for synaptics gpl is enough to show that the
licensing has caused problems outside of debian as well. My original
program was a stand-alone configuration utility which had no relation to
X, and the GPL was appropriate for that. Now that people have used it to
create patches against X (inheriting my original GPL license in
the process), relicensing would make (my contributions at least) more
useful to more people --- which is, after all, the goal!

[I haven't seen debian's version of the synaptics patch, but as far as I
can tell from the code on
  http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/index.html
my contributions are limited to the file named ps2comm.c. I am named
twice in the file. If you add the following text to that file in
your patch and send it by me, I will sign off on it:

Tagging this bug as wontfix pending further discussion, then. I do
not want to fork from Mr. Dickey's xterm too badly.

There's a lot of discussion that could be made - the patch is based on X11R6.1
xterm. So one would have to study it to see how to add whatever features it
provides that XFree86 xterm does not. I reviewed it last year, found that it
added bugs that I could demonstrate with vttest. (And rather than fix some of
the problems that I noticed with X11R6.3 xterm, the resulting Solaris 9 xterm
has a bad memory leak in resizing). Some of the symbol names in the patch
demonstrate to me that the patch's author was moderately familiar with XFree86
xterm.

Studying the patch itself, I noticed more than one place where it did not do
error-checking. The documentation doesn't state _what_ it does, only that it
does something better. Code Set Independence, as I found by reading mailing
list is not actually implemented in this patch (it's not well-defined, but from
the author's discussion, this patch cannot achieve it - he had, as I recall,
more ambitious plans which are not reflected in the patch).

This is not to say that there's nothing there - but making a good job
of it will take more work by me than was done by the patch's author.

I wonder if you have /usr mounted with the nosuid option? What does

Yes, removing the options user, exec from fstab did it. Thanks so much!

i810/i815 graphics glitches at 1280x1024, gart problem?

2003-09-03 Thread Miles Bader
Hi,

I have a computer that has integrated video using the i815 chipset (or
at least, that what the kernel/X says). This works fine with xfree86
at 1024x768 resolution, but 1280x1024 resolution yields a glitchy
display -- basically everything looks right, but there are about 10
thin shimmery vertical lines spaced evenly across the screen.

Looking at the X output log, the only thing that seem fishy (to me) is
this (see later for a fuller log):

(WW) I810(0): xf86AllocateGARTMemory: allocation of 1024 pages failed
   (Cannot allocate memory)
(II) I810(0): No physical memory available for 4194304 bytes of DCACHE
(WW) I810(0): xf86BindGARTMemory: binding of gart memory with key 1
at offset 0x400 failed (Invalid argument)
(II) I810(0): Allocation of 4096 bytes for HW cursor failed

Googling reveals plenty of people with a similar problem, but none of
the solutions offered seem to work for me; in particular:

  (1) My kernel has the agpgart driver, and the device has reasonable
  permissions:

 $ uname -rs
 Linux 2.4.21

 $ dmesg | grep -i 'agp\|drm'
Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 202M
agpgart: agpgart: Detected an Intel i815 Chipset.
 agpgart: AGP aperture is 64M @ 0xf800
 [drm] AGP 0.99 on Intel i810 @ 0xf800 64MB
 [drm] Initialized i810 1.2.0 20010920 on minor 0

 $ ls -l /dev/agpgart
 crw-rw-rw-1 root 10, 175 2002-01-22 19:10 /dev/agpgart

  (2) My BIOS seems reasonably set up -- at least the only video setup
stuff it has says `AGP' and `64MB aperture'.

  (3) I followed the recommendation somewhere to put `VideoRAm 65536'
in XF86Config-4, but that makes no difference.

I'm using xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-11 from debian unstable; the computer
is an NEC Mate MA10T.

Does anybody have any suggestions for debugging this?

Thanks,

Bug#168794: synaptics support in XFree86

Unforunately, I am only one of several authors (see version history at
 http://cscott.net/Projects/Synaptics/ ), but it's a start.

Thanks very much for contacting me.

I feel I should make a clarification, though.

There is no license conflict per se between the terms of the GNU GPL and
the MIT/X11 license.

The XFree86 Project, Inc., has a *policy* of not accepting any code
under the GNU GPL into their codebase. In fact, their policy is
supposedly that all code must be under something pretty close to the
MIT/X11 license or the so-called 3-clause BSD license. However, they
have been known to make exceptions.

Code under the GNU GPL has never been of those exceptions, however, and
given certain historical and traditional factors within their Project,
it may never be.

None of this means that *Debian* cannot include a GPLed input driver in
our XFree86 packages. It just means that we should not endeavor to get
our upstream to attempt to include it.

To date, I have never added any patches to the upstream XFree86 source
code in Debian's packages that were not under the MIT/X11 license terms.
This is for a couple of reasons:
  1) I wanted it to be easy to submit our patches upstream without
 licensing headaches;
  2) The XFree86 distribution is well known for being under a
non-copyleft license. If Debian's XFree86 packages carry the whiff
of GNU GPL, people might be bound to its copyleft terms without
 their knowledge.

While 2) is probably not a practical concern with respect to an input
driver, it's very important for things like the shared libraries in the
XFree86 distribution.

Anyway, sorry for the length of this message. I welcome your efforts to
alter the licensing on the Synaptics touchpad driver to MIT/X11 terms,
since if you are successful it will save me the trouble of rethinking my
patch-licensing policy.

I did, however, want to be sure you understood that there is no
licensing conflict per se. The licenses are perfectly compatible,
both are DFSG-free, and both are perfectly acceptable to the Debian
Project (and to me personally for that matter). An example of a pair of
licensed that are *not* compatible are the Apache license and the GNU
GPL.

If you do relicense, I want to be sure you do so on an informed basis,
and do not feel misled later.

If there is anything I can help you with, please let me know, and I will
if I can.

heh, poedit was recommended to me by someone who has done a considerable

As long as you don't distribute the result, there is no problem. The GPL
only bounds you when distibuting, not when using.

And since i doubt that it is even possible to distribute the running X
process which has loaded the driver module, there should be no problem.

Now, if you had a cluster or something, and process migration was a
possibility, things may be different :)))

Bug#208500: xserver-xfree86: unuseable default modes for newport driver

2003-09-03 Thread Bernhard R. Link
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-11
Severity: minor

If choosing the newport driver, the default modes
selected are not supported by the driver. (According
to /usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86/README.newport
and the error message I get otherwise).

I guess something like

if [ $RET = newport ]; then
  DEFAULT_DEPTH=8
  DEFAULT_MODES=1280x1024

at the correct place in xserver-xfree86.config will
improve the situation a lot.

Severity: normal

I don't know why Ben Collins reassigned this bug to XFree86 (he provided
no explanation to the bug logs), but this problem appears to have been
fixed for quite some time.

People are reporting success with rxvt and xlibs 4.2.1-11 (Debian

(Using locale LC_ALL=fi_FI)

First I mark text in rxvt. Then I try to paste it to another rxvt,
but nothing appears. When I keep pressing middle button (paste)
something very strange characters appear (like control characters).
Pasting from other programs (Emacs, Netscape) works well, but similar
problems appear when pasting to other program from rxvt. (Marked text
in test didn't include any local 8-bit characters, only 7-bit ASCII
characters.)

Also sometimes rxvt died when pasting from it.

4.1.0, at the latest.

This bug has therefore been fixed in Debian for years.

Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.0.2-1
Severity: normal

Am I missing some importantant point? Including a piece of software

 so it's purely cosmetic.

Well, diff can see the difference in the English strings.

heh, poedit was recommended to me by someone who has done a considerable
amount of translation work (also judging from the fact that you're first
person to complain this is rarely a problem). Anyhow I'll use kbabel in the
future untill poedit gets fixed (a bugreport has been filed).

Well, all the existing .po files wrap at 79 columns except for de.po,
which wraps at 80.

Not really sure why poedit behaved so weirdly for you.

 I guess something like

 if [ $RET = newport ]; then
   DEFAULT_DEPTH=8
   DEFAULT_MODES=1280x1024

at the correct place in xserver-xfree86.config will
 improve the situation a lot.

Fixed in XSF SVN repository, revision 477.

 --scott

Bug#208609: xspecs: Please include XKB

Package: xspecs
Version: 4.2.1-10
Severity: wishlist

Please include the XKB spec in the xspecs package. I wanted to refer to
it today and had to go search for it on the web. I presume the right
file to copy would be doc/hardcopy/XKB/XKBlib.ps.gz

Yes, removing the options user, exec from fstab did it. Thanks so much!
