Thanks for following up.

Okay, instead of Option "NoAccel", try each of these in turn:

   Option "XaaNoSolidHorVertLine"

   Option "XaaNoSolidTwoPointLine"

Does one or the other (or both together) eliminate the problem?

Bug#214524: xlibs: UTF-8 locale not useable

This is effectivly what I can see after installing the xlibs package.

But when stracing some software (like Gaelon, an old one I must admit,
but shouldn't it be linked against dynamic libraries ?) they try to
open libraries in ".../locales/common" and not ".../locales/lib/common".
Even keyboard composition (globaly) was not working at first...

But may be I just didn't upgrade all the needed X libraries... Shouldn't
dependencies has played their trick at this level? I will investigated this
a bit more and come back with more information.

Thanks for your answer anyway!

Regards, J.C.

Bastian Blank attempted several times, got tripped up by the DRI foolery and
other NOT_BUILDING_XF86_SERVER fun, and ended up giving up.

Thanks for following up.

Okay, instead of Option "NoAccel", try each of these in turn:

   Option "XaaNoSolidHorVertLine"

   Option "XaaNoSolidTwoPointLine"

Does one or the other (or both together) eliminate the problem?

> Xlib locale modules.

Not that it's crucial to the general archive, but:

* netbsd-i386 has never tried to build XFree86 4.3.0 (unless someone
else did it and never spoke up).

This is due to a large set of things that, with any luck, will start to
be resolved in the relatively near future (moving a build box into a colo
where it can get sufficient bandwidth, having debpool available in a public
enough fashion that I'm willing to use it for managing things, and the new
job that will provide funds for #1 and caused delays in #2 slowing down
enough to permit more Debian work again).

And then I get to figure out how to make subversion do the Right Thing,
which is something I should probably be figuring out anyway. :)

Four architectures are lagging the version of xfree86 in experimental,
and three of them have never attempted to build xfree86 4.3.0 at all, at

Please, please, build xfree86 4.3.0-0pre1v3 from experimental for your

Well. Debian's XFree86 4.3 release is almost 10 months behind other
distributions, giving the developers (including humble me) 10 months
time for fixing bugs which were discovered after the mass-distros like
Mandrake and RedHat threw it out. Don't you think this is a compelling
reason?

(Please don't consider this statement any kind of offence. I _really_
appreciate your work for Debian.)

It appears, though, that DanielS is not as conservative. I guess we'll
see how that works out in this case; in general it's a pretty bad
strategy, as we've seen occasionally.

I can only speak for the SiS driver. This driver has been very stable
for a long time. Just count the posts on the XFree mailing lists
regarding this driver. You'll hardly see 15 since Jan 2003 (the majority
of which were installation problems). Or look at Debian's BTS. The
only bug reports for SiS stuff were like "SIS 740 not supported" and
such. (Don't get the idea that SiS hardware is seldom; the driver has
been downloaded from my website more than 600.000 times since 01/01/2003)

The reason for changing anything (despite the stability) relates to the
fact that vendors customize SiS chips and this leads to
incompatibilities. Since Jan 2003 (the release of Xfree 4.3), I have
included support for such customized systems in not less than 20 cases.
Furthermore, companies still produce new machines with SiS hardware,
with new types of LCD panels. These sometimes require adaptions as well.
10 months is a long time. Many new machines have been thrown on the
market since then.

The reason for pushing the most current driver into Debian's XFree is
simply the fact that a lot of people will rely on a "3rd party driver"
(being the one from my website) otherwise, because their LCD panel - for
example- just turns black...

The other changes since June (which was when Daniel pulled the driver
from CVS HEAD the last time), include no major (ie dangerous) things.
(Fixes for TV, TV scaling, SiSCtrl interface, improved monitor
detection). I myself use the driver on 4 different machines 24/7. One
could say it gets enough testing, I guess.

I've reassigned it back to xfonts-base, but it probably needs to be
assigned to xlibs.

In any event, the bug had already been filed; since it was the same
problem, it would have been fine to follow up to the Emacs bug and CC

I can't reproduce this, and I use a UTF-8 environment.

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common is where XFree86 4.2.1 puts the Xlib
locale modules.

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/lib/common is where XFree86 4.3.0 puts the
Xlib locale modules.

Nothing needs to be backported. The HEAD version is unified for all
versions since 4.1.

It appears, though, that DanielS is not as conservative. I guess we'll
see how that works out in this case; in general it's a pretty bad
strategy, as we've seen occasionally.

As I read the bug lists for xfonts-base, the previously reported similar
bug (213286) had been reassigned to Emacs. But this one (214449) is
obviously not an Emacs bug, since it also affects several other
programs.

Which I did.

Thank _you_ for your work on X and for Debian!

I am sure you get quite a lot of complaints and very little praise. But
you should know that your work is much appreciated.

I've got an updated SiS driver patch here (along with an updated 4_3-branch
patch), that I'll commit within the next couple of days. Cheers.

What's the problem grabbing it from head as you or Daniel have done before?

Bug#214524: xlibs: UTF-8 locale not useable

2003-10-07 Thread Progfou
Package: xlibs
Version: 4.3.0-0pre1v3
Severity: important
Tags: experimental

First, thanks all of you for having drop XFree86 4.3 into experimental!
Since I'm using some notebook with a Trident CyberBlade XPAi1, I need it.
I will use it everyday, at home as well as at work.

First thing I found when running it: the UTF-8 environment doesn't work
anymore ! To find the problem, I did strace some program (like galeon)
and found that they was looking for some UTF-8 library in:
  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common/xlcUTF8Load.so.2
But there is no such directory as /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common !
I found the corresponding library in a subdirectory "lib/common".
So, this is the hack I'm using for now to be able to use UTF-8 environment:
  ln -s lib/common /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/common

Best regards, J.C.
