Migrate to them, and away from xlibmesa* (i.e. stop providing).

Mesa will have to make that possible first, even version 6 can't yet
build a libGL capable of direct rendering with an X server.

Bug#222831: same problem here: dead keyboard under X

2004-01-30 Thread Christian Schwarz

I just wanted to report that I'm experiencing the same problem here: when
I start X via gdm, sometimes the keyboard is completely dead, sometimes it
just works perfectly. Note that this happens only at startup--I don't
have lock up problems within a X session.

Im running xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-3.woody3 on a woody system.

The problem is very annoying for me, so I'd be happy to get some hints how
to fix this.

Thanks,

Chris

So I'm going to guess that this is irrelevant.

Yeah, there's PCI domain stuff all over sparcPci.c. I agree.

I got bitched at for submitting this patch upstream. They all said that the

I'm not sure it's the same problem; does it also happen with startx for
you?

If not, your problem could be a known race condition where the X server
doesn't attach to the same VT it displays on; restarting the display
manager fixes it. Make sure that gdm passes something like vt7 to the X
server.

Don was running across a network connection, but he said he experienced
 the exact same problem locally.

So it's not that (network delay). But a little more information might
help. From the original report, I think this chunk in main.c is where
it's failing - but no idea why (around line 3415):

#ifndef USE_POSIX_TERMIOS
if (ioctl(tty, TCSETA, tio) == -1)
HsSysError(cp_pipe[1], ERROR_TIOCSETP);
#else /* USE_POSIX_TERMIOS */
if (tcsetattr(tty, TCSANOW, tio) == -1)
HsSysError(cp_pipe[1], ERROR_TIOCSETP);
#endif /* USE_POSIX_TERMIOS */

Since the '23' would be ERROR_TIOCSETP. There're several calls before
that in the child process, and I can only guess what's going on. (This
one looks hard enough even if I could reproduce it). I generally do
something like
strace -tfo foo.out ./xterm
for this sort of thing...

XFree86 4.3.0 for woody

2004-01-30 Thread Norbert Tretkowski
Hi,

after a discussion with Branden on IRC last week, I decided to take up
the woody part of our XFree86 4.3 packages.

I have working backports (working as in works for me), but I need
some feedback. I uploaded the packages to
http://people.debian.org/~nobse/xfree86/woody/.

Yes, there's more than just xfree86, let me explain why:

- render (not available in woody) is a (build-)dependency for xrender
- xcursor (not available in woody) is a (build-)dependency for xfree86
- xft (not available in woody) is a (build-)dependency for xfree86
- xrender (not available in woody) is a (build-)dependency for xfree86

These are not really problematic, because they are already part of
XSF, and no changes are required on the packages itself to compile
them on woody.

- fontconfig (not available in woody) is a (build-)dependency for
  xfree86
- freetype (version in woody too old) is a (build-)dependency for
  fontconfig

These are *not* part of XSF, and if I understood Branden right, he
doesn't want these packages in XSF repository. They compiled fine on
woody without modifications, so I don't see a problem here, at least
with fontconfig. Maybe there's a problem with the backward
compatibility of freetype.

- debconf (version in woody too old) is required for xfree86, e.g.
  xfree86-common
- intltool-debian (not available in woody) is a dependency of
  po-debconf
- po-debconf (not available in woody) is a dependency of debconf
- ucf (version in woody too old) is required for fontconfig

These are taken directly from sid, they are arch:all and run fine on
woody.

I'm not sure if it's possible to get rid of xft support, but it would
be nice for the woody backport, because then most of above backports
are no longer necessary to use xfree86 4.3.0 on woody.

Bug#230243: xbase-clients: startx -- :0 uses too large UI fonts

Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0-0pre1v5
Severity: normal

When I start X11 using a simple startx, I get the right size fonts, corresponding to
what is defined in Fonts in the KDE control center, or in Mozilla's defaults.

When I start X11 using startx -- :0, I get fonts that are about 6 steps too
large. So
to get the fonts to look right, I have to decrease the font size in the KDE
Control
Center from, say, 12 to 6.

GUI fonts in all applications are too large -- the splash screen, mozilla, KDE.

It doesn't matter which x-server number you tell startx to start. For instance,
startx -- :3 does the same. User also doesn't matter.

When you pass arguments to the X server via startx, you are overriding
the default arguments sent to the X server by xinitrc.

The startx(1x) and xinit(1x) manpages have more on this.

Try these two command lines:

startx -- :0 -dpi 75

startx -- :0 -dpi 100

Which looks more correct?

Great! This fully resolves my problem and I suggest the bug report be
closed as incorrect.

I understand from man startx that the content of .xinitrc could be
placed in .xsession -- is this relevant to passing arguments to the X
server via startx?

Or put differently, is there a way to pass argument to the X server via
startx that retains the default arguments sent to the X server by
xinitrc, with the exception of the argument you pass via startx?

That is to say, it would be useful if default values remain in force
unless they are explicitly overridden.

The process of starting the X server is byzantine and may need to be,
but if anything can be done to provide a better user interface that
would be a big win. The power of the X server is one of the triumphs of
free software, and it's surely underused.

David

Could you please add /etc/X11/Xreset and /etc/X11/Xreset.d (like the

(Not sure why gdm do not include a Xreset file, but it did not appear

I'll file a bug on gdm too just to keep all of them consistent. :)

that has been posted to comp.os.linux.x as well.

[I have a second mouse that I want to use for xcwcp Morse code

Ben Just have both mice. Set [one] of your mice as

Ben You can then use both mice (with both hands, fighting for the cursor ;) ).
Maybe like

Section InputDevice
Identifier Configured Mouse
Driver mouse
Option SendCoreEventsOn
Option Device/dev/psaux
Option Protocol PS/2
EndSection

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Mouse
Driver mouse
Option CorePointer
Option Device/dev/ttyS1
Option Protocol IntelliMouse
Option Emulate3Buttons true
Option ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection

Well, guess what, the first Section is completely ignored, as seen in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log. X just must find its Generic Mouse, all
other Mouses are ignored, at least on Debian. Maybe you know of the
secret Identifier for second mouses. I couldn't find it on the

finds the Identifier it wants and thats the end of it. I don't know.
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86/README.mouse.gz has no examples of two

have fixed things.

Just for future reference these are the programs I was trying to run (on
unstable, running XFree86 4.2.1.1 (Debian 4.2.1-15 20031230220653) and
Fluxbox 0.1.14)

These would complain about fonts, then die: xfontsel, gv, bbsload, bbppp,
bitmap, xcalc, gnomecal, xclipboard, xclock, xditview

This would complain, then run anyway: xpdf

These ran okay: gtkfontsel, MozillaFirebird, abiword, ethereal, dillo, gaim

It's curious to me that xfontsel would segfault, but gtkfontsel ran with
no problems.

I just found the thread on the VT problems with i830. I've a Radeon
R250 in my laptop and have the same problem. With the generic driver
and 4.2 from Sarge things were fine. I just get no VT switching with
the experimental 4.3 packages, since I started using them (-0pre1v3
IIRC).

I never filed a bug because I was under the impression we weren't to
file bugs on experimental packages...

Please CC me as I'm not on debian-x.
