 Hi Branden,

 Thanks for responding.

Sounds like you made local modifications to the conffile
/etc/X11/fonts/misc/xfonts-base.alias, and dpkg was preserving them.

dpkg will preserve a removed file?

Yes. To restore it you'll need to use dpkg --install --force-confmiss,
though, not --force-confnew.

All the alias files have the same date and time (except for the new
version I copied from the extracted xfonts-base package):

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/X11/fonts/misc$ ls -l *.alias
 -rw-r--r--1 root root 1322 2003-11-07 11:32
 xfonts-artwiz.alias
 -rw-r--r--1 root root 5737 2004-03-10 07:15 xfonts-base.alias
 -rw-r--r--1 root root 533 2003-11-07 11:32
 xfonts-base-transcoded.alias
 -rwxr-xr-x1 root root 5272 2003-11-07 11:32
 xfonts-bolkhov-cp1251-misc.alias
 -rw-r--r--1 root root 8422 2003-11-07 11:32
 xfonts-terminus.alias
 -rw-r--r--1 root root 1363 2003-11-07 11:32 xtel.alias

I'm now just wondering how xfonts-base.alias ended up with iso8859-15
instead of 8859-1. I'm also not sure that the update yesterday is what
broke things, as I may have had the server running continuously for
more than one sid update -- perhaps a month (or longer).

Was there a time where xfonts-base.alias had 8859-15 in it? Doesn't
 seem likely.

There may have been a bug along these lines at some point, but I confess
I can't turn up anything obvious in quick grepping of the package
changelog.

switch to VT1. Now the key presses are ignored.
I can switch by opening a terminal window and using sudo chvt 1.
When in VT1, I can switch back to X by doing alt7 in the usual way.

For the record, you can use ldd to determine a binary's dynamic
dependencies; anything it doesn't list is necessarily static.

Not strictly; something like dlopen could also be used. I thought this
was the case here because linking libGL statically doesn't make much
sense to me.

Bug#234877: xserver-common: Failure in configuration for i830

2004-03-11 Thread Andreas Tille
Hi,

just an additional information: After #226430 was closed I'm now able to
get XFree 4.3.0 working with my *old* configuration which was builded using
the broken binary. Resume: The current xfree packages does not create a
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file on (some?) i830 based machines but the binary
works if you use the configuration which was created by the not working
binaries from the last xfree-packages from experimental.

Feel free to ask me for further information but I'm not sure which
information would be helpfull here.

Kind regards

 Andreas.

Bug#237393: xserver-xfree86: Screen blanking seems to have stopped working

2004-03-11 Thread Christian Lynbech
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-5
Severity: normal

If one lowers the screensaving to 10 seconds by executing something
like this:

xset s 10 10

and then do

xset s blank

and wait for 10 seconds, nothing will happen.

If one then executes something like this:

xset s noblank

and wait again, the X screen saving bitmap will appear.

I have not been able to determine any connection with other xset
options, for instance this problem is not affected by dpms being on or
off.

The problem occurred only after upgrading to XFree86 4.3 and we see it
it both on my machine which has this graphiccard:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82865G Integrated Graphics
Device (rev 02)

and on my colleagues machine that has this graphics card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro AGP
1X/2X (rev 5c)

Strangely enough none of us seems to have the problem at home,
unfortunately I do not have those graphic cards brands at hand right
now.

Glad to hear your problem is solved now.

Yes, there have been changes to the i830 part of i810 driver between 4.3.0-2

But I doubt, that these have anything to do with your problem, because you
actually were able to do console switching via chvt with 4.3.0-2.

So, just curious and for the record, would you please try if things also do

Just for your info - starting with 4.3.0, the i810 driver supports the i865G

See, if things work better with the i810 instead of vesa driver.

to minimize dependencies users will have to install.

Then I don't understand why you link GTK dynamically though.

The libGL ABI is very stable, but the implementations are platform
specific; this binary won't be capable of using direct rendering with
nVidia cards, e.g., and even with the cards supported by free DRI
drivers, direct rendering will only work if the user has those drivers
installed, in which case he is very likely to have libGL as well.

(If you already know all this, please ignore this post :)

So, just curious and for the record, would you please try if things
also do work, when you add

 OptionVBERestore 1

 to your device section?

 thanks.
- Christian

Dear Christian,

Thanks for the suggestion.

If I put
Option VBERestore 1
in the Device section of XF86Config-4, then I find that the keypress
C-A-F1 will still switch to vt1. HOWEVER, when I use A-F7 to switch
back, the screen goes blank.

If I put
Option VBERestore 0
then everything works totally correctly. (I assume that 0 is the
default.)

I have an 845G chipset. I think that VBERestore option was put in to
help people with 830G chipsets. According to
http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html
this option was to allow 830G users to optionally back out a fix that
had to be put in to get correct behaviour for my chipset, the 845G.

After all of this, I think my problem was not the drivers at all. It
turns out that 4.3.0 changed the rules for Xmodmap. The trap keys
like C-A-F1 that had been implicit, were put explicitly into the
internal xmodmap. If you do xmodmap -pke as root in a terminal,
you'll see them in there.

I was using an old modified Xmodmap to remap my keyboard, a
Happy-Hacker's model, to make the diamond keys do a Delete-forward.
But my Xmodmap didn't have the new entries for the trap keys! So I
had to make a new Xmodmap starting from a current output of xmodmap
-pke. That solved the problem.

So I don't know which Debian update solved my problem, since my
problem was of my own making and not something about the drivers.
Sorry. Hope the above data point helps.

That's because 4.3.0-2 was buggy. Please read the bug logs of #234772,
and note that the current version in unstable is 4.3.0-5.

In any case, I don't think the original bug report is related to
liquidwar, so I will reasign it to libxext-dev.

That's precisely the wrong thing to do. You need to ask the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] list to re-queue your package for autobuilding.

I agree with you on one point : the current version in unstable is 4.3.0-5, so
I just need to ask for a new build on m68k to correct my issue. I never said
something else (but I'm not always very clear).

If you reassign 236428 to any xfree86 package, I will reassign it right
 back to liquidwar.

Why?
I quote the original bug report 236428 :

I was trying to build [1]dri-mach64-2002.12.29 on my sparc. For DRI to work
I'm told I need to keep byte size matched for kernel and user. This means I
must build dri in 64 bit. I don't realy know what this error means but
can/is Xext 64 bits?

/usr/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.a when searching
for -lXext
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXext

I really don't think it's a liquidwar bug. You have reasign the bug to
liquidwar.
What can I do with this bug now? I can't close it. Can I reasign it to
libxext-dev
again?
