Bug#241191: Xserver crash after apt-get update on march 30 2004

2004-03-31 Thread Etienne Perron
Package: XFree86-common
Version: 4.3.0

Hi,

I did an apt-get update (debian testing) yesterday, March 30th 2004. After
downloading all the packages, I had to do some preconfigurations (in
dselect),
and I was asked to choose if my graphics card is a framebuffer device or
not. I just left the default answer.

Since then, I'm unable to start XFree86. After typing startx, the server
crashes saying:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal11. Server aborting

I don't know much about XFree86, so if anyone can help me, that would be
great.

I have a Dell Latitude X300, that has an Intel Centrino 855GM graphics chip.

Attachments: XF86Config-4, XFree86.0.log

Thanks a lot
Etienne

No, XFree86-debug doesn't SEGV (I had to change nvidia driver to

Thanks for following up. I suspect the ELF object loader is doing

Ahh. I tried increasing the 32bpp number to 150MHz, and was successfully
able to use a mode at 135MHz. I am confused as to why the Pixmap setting
affects the ramdac frequency. Is this a mistake or am I misunderstanding
something? Would it be okay to set the maximum based on depth instead
of bitsPerPixel, or is bitsPerPixel wrong if it's set to 32 at a plain
  24-bit depth?

I would have to look in the specs, but i believe the ramdac is only able
to push less pixels if those are of 16 or 32 bpp. This is the case for
all 3Dlabs chips prior to the permedia3. Look at the part in glint_driver.c
where these values are set. I have no explanation also, since my
involvement was with the permedia3, so maybe ask Alan Hourihane about
 it.

If your graphics controller is limited by memory bandwidth, the maximum pixel
clock depends on the number of bits per pixels, since larger pixels mean more
memory bandwidth.

I've found these patches, but haven't test them yet. If I understand
correctly, it has to do something with libGl runtime generated code.

http://dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/xfree/patchsets/4.3.99.901/patch-4.3.99.901-0.1/9961_all_4.3.0-libGL-exec-shield-fixes-v2.patch

BTW, xserver SEGVecs on /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a, if I
rename this file, then xserver doesn't crash, instead it complains about
unability to load base modules and exits witout SEGV.

  Thank you for your help.

I made some experiments with xev, once with
  altwin:left_meta_win,compose:menu,
once without it. It's funny that Alt_L+X produces the same result in both
cases, but with the XkbOptions emacs doesn't recognize Alt_L+X. :-/

Are these keys working right in xterm? If yes, this is most likely an
emacs problem, it looks similar to
   http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=165814msg=7

Hmm. It does work in xterm. In gnome-terminal I have to use Alt_L as
Meta-key though.

If this is a bug in Emacs then I wonder why the Meta-key works correctly
with altwin:meta_win but fails with altwin:left_meta_win. How is the
left Windows key handled differently between the two options? Should
there be any difference? If not then I'd suspect that it's rather a
problem in X.

And it's not a problem with the Xserver itself, because the problem also
occurs with a self-built server from the DRI project that I was using
before the XFree86 upgrade without problems.

Bug#234067: xserver-xfree86: Memory leak in xserver (4.3.x) (vesa server)

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-7

Followup-For: Bug #234067

This bug has already been reported.
It seems that the vesa server suffers a memory leak. This happened
after the upgrade to Xserver 4.3 (and KDE 3.2, but this seems not to be
correlated, since the person who previously reported this bug was using
another wm).

It is eating up all my swap (512MB) after only a few days of moderate
usage.

However xrestop does not show any leakage due to a client.
For example, after few hours top reports:
77MB (data) and 36MB swapped for Xfree while xrestop reports:
top - Display: localhost:0
  Monitoring 40 clients. XErrors: 1
Pixmaps: 29879K total, Other: 369K total, All:

Can an s390 person please test revision 1177 of the trunk in the XSF SVN

The goal of that change was to make sure that s390 stops uselessly
setting up and building the xc-xserver-xfree86-dbg directory. This
should speed up the build a little.

First of all I have got an upstream error, missing semicolon.

After I had fixed that, I had to disable install of xserver-wrapper,
since it isn't available on s390.

This is an error in /usr/lib/pkgconfig/xcursor.pc which looks like this:

Bug#227578: xbase-clients: xmodmap stopped working

2004-03-31 Thread Roland Stigge
Hi Branden,

maybe the problem I encounter is slightly different from Rainer's. When
redefining a key, the first two resulting characters (without and with
Shift) are working, but the second two (AltGr and [without and with
Shift]) are not. The _predefined_ characters generated with AltGr are
working (on German keyboards, e.g. {,[,],}), but when redefining those
ones, the AltGr generated characters are not working anymore.

Please note that I talked with another German DD, and for him, it's
working fine. I'm using the same redefinitions as he does, and the
problem appeared for me on upgrade to 4.3.0. He is also using current
unstable like me.

bye,
  Roland

Bug#226973: [Linux-fbdev-devel] Re: Bug#226973: xserver-xfree86: [glint] second card at wrong resolution

2004-03-31 Thread Clint Adams
If your graphics controller is limited by memory bandwidth, the maximum pixel
clock depends on the number of bits per pixels, since larger pixels mean more
 memory bandwidth.

I'm unclear on the differences between 24 bpp and 32 bpp and how this
relates to internal pixmap format.

Worked like a charm... thanks. One other mention (not sure if it's been
reported already):

After upgrading, /usr/bin/X11/startx and a bunch of other x* apps went
missing. Had to figureout/manually install xbase-clients to fix.
Rather annoying when starx magically disappears. :(

Bug#241286: xserver-xfree86: [siliconmotion] patch to fix broken Rotate option

2004-03-31 Thread Jim Paris
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-7jim
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The Rotate option of the siliconmotion driver is broken in 4.3 due
to RandR. Attached patch disables RandR when Rotate is used; this
seems to be the solution used by other drivers and it works.

Accepting .Xdefaults by default

2004-03-31 Thread Jacobo221
Currently, Debian doesn't support ~/.Xdefaults but does support
~/.Xresources. The ways to walk around this are to soft link or to change
it's name.
Since a $HOME directory might be shared between varius ditributions (on
boxes which might be used for testing distros, for example), to rename the
file may not work, so soft linking si the only way to walk around it. Any
way, it'd be far much better if Debian supported .Xdefaults in
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/30xfree86-common_xresources

Instead of:
if grep -qs ^allow-user-resources $OPTIONFILE; then
  if [ -f $USRRESOURCES ]; then
xrdb -merge $USRRESOURCES
  fi
fi

It could have something like:
if grep -qs ^allow-user-resources $OPTIONFILE; then
  for USRRESOURCE in $USRRESOURCES; do
if [ -f $USRRESOURCE ]; then
  xrdb -merge $USRRESOURCES
fi
  done
fi

And /etc/X11/Xsession wouldn't contain:
USRRESOURCES=$HOME/.Xresources

But instead would contain:
USRRESOURCES=$HOME/.Xresources $HOME/.Xdefaults

I'd like to know what other Debian users think. Thanx.

Well, I personally would prefer that:

  1) copyright is not asserted in a file until a substantially expressive cha=
  nge has
been made to a file; and

For some people, this appears to be simply by renaming things.

Sometimes things get renamed because a copyright license requires them
to be renamed upon modification (see some versions of the Apache
Software License), or because a trademark is asserted on the name.

These are separate issues, and should not be conflated.

already made, since there is no change to the notices within the files.

Rather than argue about it(*) simply asking David Dawes for clarification
 would probably get results.

Over the past 2--3 months, I and others have tried asking David Dawes,
and Sue from X-Oz Technologies, Inc., for clarification of several
issues related to the new licenses used in the XFree86 source
distribution, and these efforts have failed.

I refer you to the archives of the xorg_foundation[1] and
debian-legal[2] lists for an accounting of the above.

Given that, it seems less mutually aggravating to stop asking questions
that cannot or will not be answered. Hand-wringing over why that is the
case seems pointless.

Notice that if Branden would enable the driver-sdk patch i submitted
 such a long time ago,

It wasn't suitable for merge as it stood. IIRC, Daniel Stone
volunteered to shepherd it in, but ran out of time to do this.

If someone will step up and responsibility for it, it might get in. But
dumping patches that have problems and/or won't apply is not sufficient.

It's a wishlist item, and is being prioritized accordingly. Take a look

If you reinstall xlibs with the command:

German keyboards using the nodeadkeys variant should produce an
apostrophe, not an acute accent, when AE12 is pressed. This change is

Bug#241336: Mouse doesn't work after xfree86 upgrade

2004-03-31 Thread Jefferson Cowart
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-7
Severity: important

After the latest xfree86 upgrade my mouse stopped working. On boot gpm
picks up the mouse and it works until X starts at which point it stops
working. Switching back to the console reveals that the mouse doesn't
work there until I restart gpm and once again dies if I switch back to
an X Window. I tried running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86, but that
hung after a few questions about the video card. Subsequent attempts to
run dpkg-reconfigure, just die at the starting blue screen.
(That may be a seperate bug, but I'm not sure.)
Clearly it isn't a hardware issue as the mouse will work from the
console as long as gpm has been restarted since X started.

 Hi Branden,

maybe the problem I encounter is slightly different from Rainer's. When
redefining a key, the first two resulting characters (without and with
Shift) are working, but the second two (AltGr and [without and with
Shift]) are not. The _predefined_ characters generated with AltGr are
working (on German keyboards, e.g. {,[,],}), but when redefining those
ones, the AltGr generated characters are not working anymore.

Please note that I talked with another German DD, and for him, it's
working fine. I'm using the same redefinitions as he does, and the
problem appeared for me on upgrade to 4.3.0. He is also using current
 unstable like me.

Anyway mixing xmodmap and xkb seems to be a bad idea, maybe you should
add
  Option XkbDisable true
to your XF86Config-4 file.

Over the past 2--3 months, I and others have tried asking David Dawes,
and Sue from X-Oz Technologies, Inc., for clarification of several
issues related to the new licenses used in the XFree86 source
distribution, and these efforts have failed.

Most of the words I've seen have been asking him to change it. Here/there
is a request for clarification, but still with a slant toward change. I'm
curious where all this will lead, but on the whole I find David Dawes more
predictable than the others (so far).

It's likely that a well-defined question (for a yes/no answer) would get
some results. And as noted before, the appropriate place to ask questions
is not in a newsgroup, but in the forum mailing list. (I'm not subscribed
to that - don't like interminable arguments ;-).

I refer you to the archives of the xorg_foundation[1] and
debian-legal[2] lists for an accounting of the above.

I think I've read most of this (it's possible I'm overlooking something ;-)

Sometimes things get renamed because a copyright license requires them

These are separate issues, and should not be conflated.

I didn't have that sort of example in mind, actually.

  x-window-system-core, and X includes a built-in font server.

Also, like most other daemons in Debian, xfs is started automatically
  when it is installed.

Could you describe the actual problem you ran into, please?

Well, probably I was wrong with default - actually, it is difficult to
say what is default in this case.

 - XF86Config generated by dexconf does reference local xfs, and includes
more font paths only if the local font server has problems (quoted from
 comment in generated XF86Config-4)

Makes sense, if you have a font server, you want to use it. However,
most systems do not have a font sever, and X goes with the fallback
fontpath entries.

 - xfs is NOT start automatically by it's postinst, because in general case
it is not safe. In particular, restarting xfs on package upgrade while it
is in use by local or remote X server may cause that X server and/or it's
clients to misbehave or crash. Probably xfs postinst may be modified to
start xfs on initial install unconditionally, while not touching a running
daemon on upgrade, but at this moment it is not done. At least, on initial
installation of what is in testing now, xfs is not started automatically.

 - if xfs was installed during the initial install process, it will be
started after reboot. So, if it is not started also by base-config, X will
get different configuration before and after reboot. This is bad IMHO.

So it is better for base-config to start xfs if it was installed. At least
it won't do any harm, and will make system more consistent.

I don't think it's base-config's job to work around what looks like a
bug in xdm for not starting the daemon on initial install. Forwarding
to the XSF.

Re: X Strike Force - some infos missing

Around 21 o'clock on Mar 31, Thomas Dickey wrote:

Google says that X11R6.7 has been upcoming for more than a year.
How much closer is it than that?

Oh, that's funny!

And here I thought we'd managed to come up with a unique new name...

The X.org Foundation has been completely reformulated and is now
driven by actual developers instead of dying Unix vendors. Egbert Eich is
currently driving a fork of XFree86 4.4 RC2 to release and we all agreed
to call it X11R6.7. It's not technically different from XFree86 4.4, but
it isn't affected by the XFree86 1.1 license.

We were hoping to be done by yesterday, but it's taking longer to get the
documentation into reasonable shape. Next Tuesday is the current target; I
think we'll hit that.

Red Hat, SuSE, Debian and Gentoo (at least) will be using the X.org
codebase for their releases.

Parts of the system which are maintained outside (like xterm) will
eventually be dropped from the X.org repository, as long as licenses remain
compatible.

Bug#226973: xserver-xfree86: [glint] second card at wrong resolution

2004-03-31 Thread Clint Adams
Do you want to continue working on this problem, or would you like to
see the patch you have prepared incorporated into unstable more or less
 as-is?

I am continuing to work on it with no noticeable success. The patch in
the bug report changes the second head from completely unusable to
barely usable, so I would include it for now. If I manage to come up
with anything that fixes the problem completely, it will no doubt depend
on that patch.
