Bug#246267: xserver-xfree86: [directfb] Driver not supported.
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0-7 Severity: wishlist There is a patch on the DirectFB page that enables Xfree86 to use the DirectFB lib(allready pkgd in Debian). It should be trivial to merge this patch into Xfree86 so as to add this support. XDirectFB builds inside XFree86 so there is no point in having another pkg. I do not know if the DirectFB ppl are interested in having this merged upstream. Complete tarballs can be found here http://directfb.org/download/XDirectFB/. [The following is a form letter.] Dear bug submitter, Since the XFree86 X server is a large and complex piece of software, some more informtion is required of you before this bug can be handled. Please run the following commands from a shell prompt to gather and deliver this information to us: $ /usr/share/bug/xserver-xfree86 /tmp/output 31 $ mailx -s Re: Bug#245249 [EMAIL PROTECTED] /tmp/output If you do not have a mailx command on your system, you can get by installing the mailx Debian package; for example, with the aptitude install mailx or apt-get install mailx commands as root. Alternatively, you can also use a mail command that is compatible with mailx's command-line syntax, such as mutt. One very good way to file bugs with the Debian Bug Tracking System is to use the reportbug package and command of the same name. The reportbug program does a lot of automatic information-gathering that helps package maintainers to understand your system configuration, and also ensures that your message to the Debian Bug Tracking System is well-formed so that it is processed correctly by the automated tools that manage the reports. (If you've ever gotten a bounce message from the Debian Bug Tracking System that tells you your message couldn't be processed, you might appreciate this latter feature.) Therefore, I strongly urge you to give reportbug a try as your primary bug reporting tool for the Debian System in the future. If you *did* use reportbug to file your report, then you'r receiving this message because the information we expected to see was not present. If you deliberately deleted this information from the report, please don't do that in the future, even if it seems like it makes the mail too large. 50 kB (kilobytes) of configuration and log data is typical. Only if the included information greatly exceeds this amount (more than 100 kB) should you consider omitting it; instead, put it up on the World Wide Web somewhere and provide URLs to it in your report, or in subsequent followup by mailing [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Bug#245548: xserver-xfree86: extreme slowness when backingstore is enabled
retitle 245548 xserver-xfree86: backing store implementation is very slow tag 245548 + upstream thanks On Fri, Apr 23, 2004 at 08:32:13PM +0200, julien pommier wrote: Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0-7 Severity: minor I'm not sure if this is the right place to report this kind of bug, but I just noticed that using Option BackingStore on in XF86Config does affect tremendously the performance in certain conditions. I'm using the radeon driver, I don't know if this is specific to this driver. When I run the following source code: [...] Maybe there is a logical explanation to this, but I really don't understand: backingstore is supposed to speed the refresh, not slow it ! And it should not be involved in that case since the windows here use SaveUnder, and mozilla does not use BackingStore. I'm quite puzzled. I've heard people who understand X server internals refer to the existing backing store implementation as something resembling garbage. Keith Packard's X server work for freedesktop.org is expected to make a vastly improved backing store implementation available. As I understand it, the DAMAGE and XFIXES extensions have much to do with this. Other folks on the debian-x mailing list (who will see these messages) may be willing to add more information. If I set the display gamma to 0.4, I end up with a display that just looks like Arizona summer at high noon and I want sunglasses. I.e. black text on white is legible, even if it's an awfully pale black. This appears to be the same bug talked about in http://www.spinics.net/lists/rh-xf/msg01127.html http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Fedora/2004-01/1739.html and possibly http://www.redhat.com/archives/xfree86-list/2003-October/msg3.html And also: http://bugs.debian.org/234025 ...which has already been filed. There is some talk there of a fix in CVS, which would be very helpful. Patches to XFree86 CVS are not always available to us due to XFree86's license change. Thank you very much for any assistance; I'm a little wary of trying to compile xfree86 from CVS. Bug#234535: xserver dies if I start gimp with LANG=no_NO.UTF-8
Branden Robinson wrote: Dear bug submitter, Can you please get back to us about this? One more thing. I re-tried gimp while logged in as a normal user without xfstt in the font path. It worked, and now the nonascii characters seems to be correct too, unlike the test I did with startx as root. Helge Hafting

Does it also occur with xserver-xfree86-dbg? If yes, please try to get a backtrace with that, and maybe try not using font servers. Otherwise, try not loading the freetype module. Dear bug submitter, Can you please get back to us about this? Sorry, I had a work deadline yesterday. The crash is indeed related to fonts, specifically the use of xfstt. My attempts at debugging this: # apt-get install xserver-xfree86-dbg Still no symbols, apparently the wrong server started although I selected the dbg server during install. # apt-get remove xserver-xfree86 # startx Failure because /etc/X11/X doesn't exist # apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xfree86-dbg didn't help, so I removed the debug server. This also removed x-window-system and x-window-system-core. Not unexpected. # apt-get install xserver-xfree86-dbg # apt-get install x-window-system-core This gave me a /etc/X11/X, pointing to nonexisting /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 Changed it to point to the existing XFree86-debug instead. (minor fault in the dbg package?) I could then get X up using startx, but the debug server froze my machine to the point where even sysrq+B (instant boot) didn't work. I tried a couple of times, using synchronous mounts to limit the filesystem damage. I managed to open an xterm and type gimp, but the machine froze before I had time to hit enter. (The suddenly nonblinking cursor still sat at the end of line) Before, I have only seen this sort of freezing when trying to use DRI on this particular machine. I didn't enable DRI this time though, XF886Config-4 was unchanged. So I gave up on the debug server, and tried commenting out fontservers from XF86Config-4 instead. (After reinstalling xserver-xfree86 and fixing the /etc/X11/X link.) I normally use both xfs and xfstt. Without them I had fewer fonts, but gimp ran with LANG=no_NO-UTF8. The nonascii characters were all wrong though. Don't know if that is the result of some bug, or that gimp1.2 doesn't support that locale yet? Enabling the font path for xfstt brought the crash back. Disabling xfstt but using xfs gave me more fonts and still no crash. So the crash only happens with xfstt. I don't know if xfstt does something wrong, but X shouldn't really crash even if xfstt is wrong. One cannot trust font servers to be nice - they may be external after all. Please tell if there is anything else I could do to help. I have xfstt version 1.6-1 I currently run without truetype fonts as I want to try UTF-8 more. My xfstt is available at host hh.aitel.hist.no port 7101 if you want to test directly for unusual responses. Helge Hafting

Bug#245249:
I recieved an e-mail from Thomas Winischhofer regarding this problem. After trying a few things X was working once again, but with an updated sis_drv.o file from his site. I've pasted in the e-mail below. In short the solution seems to be to incorporate Thomas' updated driver. I'll also respond with the output file requested. Using 4.3.0-7 with your driver = fine so it seems that either the X team or Debian did something to the driver between those releases. I am the X team ;) Debian ships a snapshot of the driver from last June. Seems that this snapshot was buggy. Anyway, I think Debian's X packager has an update of the SiS driver on his todo-list anyway. Nice to hear that the current driver works, however. Thomas

Debian X FAQ converted to xhtml
Hello, On http://www.logic.univie.ac.at/~ametzler/.x/FAQ.xhtml you can find an initial shot at conversion of the FAQ to xhtml. It validates http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.logic.univie.ac.at%2F%7Eametzler%2F.x%2FFAQ.xhtml as XHTML 1.0 Strict. It could be beautified with proper CSS but I think it is basically ok and frankly I don't want to look at it (at least today.) ;-) hth, cu andreas

Attached are both XFree86 config, and log file (log with dri enabled). I notice both of you guys are using /dev/gpmdata (with protocol ImPS/2) as your configured mouse device. The mouse driver in XFree86 4.3 was rewritten to include some autodetection code, and I think it will run this code on every EnterVT(). Can you guys do a couple of things for this bug?: 1) Report your gpm configuration by mailing your /etc/gpm.conf (I think that's what it's called -- I don't have it installed) to this bug. 2) Disable GPM and reconfigure XFree86 to talk directly to /dev/psaux or whatever port GPM was fastened to, and see if that causes the delay to go away. Thanks! This solves the problem partially for me, ie, the hang time goes down, but does not completely disappear. It goes down from about 5 seconds to about 1.5 seconds. First, I will offer an explanation of what this mailing list's purpose is; I will then suggest some alternative forums for your message or concern. The full charter of the mailing list follows. This list is for the discussion and support of the X Window System within Debian. Issues of maintenance and porting of Debian's XFree86 packages are germane here, as are discussions of possible Debian policy mechanisms for ensuring the smooth interoperation of packages that use the X Window System, particularly widget sets, desktop environments, window managers, display managers, and packages that provide fonts for the X Window System. In particular, individuals involved with building official Debian XFree86 packages for any architecture are invited to join, as are those with various graphics hardware who seek to reproduce and/or fix bugs in the X server. This is not a user support list; this list is intended for those who deal with the source code of any of the X Window System components mentioned above. If you are experiencing a problem, the first thing to check is the Debian X FAQ. This FAQ is available on the World Wide Web: http://necrotic.deadbeast.net/xsf/XFree86/trunk/debian/local/FAQ The FAQ is also available on any Debian system that has the xfree86-common package installed. You can use the command dpkg --status xfree86-common at a shell prompt to determine whether you have the xfree86-common package installed (this technique works with any other package name as well). For instance, when I run this command I see the following: $ dpkg --status xfree86-common Package: xfree86-common Status: install ok installed (followed by additional information about the package) If xfree86-common is installed, you can view the Debian X FAQ in a variety of ways, since it is a gzipped (compressed) text file. The path to the FAQ is /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz. Here's one method for viewing it: $ zmore /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz Debian X Window System Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) List Copyright 1998-2002 Branden Robinson. This document is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 (see /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL). By its nature, this document is not complete. If your question is not answered here, try /usr/share/doc/packagename/README.Debian (and other files in the package's doc directory), manual pages, and the debian-user mailing list. See http://www.debian.org/ for more information about the Debian mailing lists. (followed by the rest of the FAQ) If the FAQ does not satisfactorily answer your question, the primary Debian users' support forum is the debian-user mailing list. You can learn more about this list at: http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/ If you have already tried that mailing list, and/or your machine does *NOT* use an Intel-x86 compatible CPU (such as a Pentium or AMD Athlon chip), you may also want to peruse one of Debian's architecture-specific mailing lists: http://lists.debian.org/debian-alpha/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-arm/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-hppa/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-ia64/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-m68k/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-mips/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-superh/ Before sending a message to one of the mailing lists, it's wise to try using the search interface; in many cases, your problem has been experienced before by other people, and a solution, workaround, or explanation may already be available! http://lists.debian.org/search.html If the search engine turns up nothing, you should know whether or not you're subscribed to a mailing list before sending a message to it. If you are not subscribed, make *certain* that you ask for private copies of replies to your message. Debian's standard practice is to reply only to mailing lists (this cuts down on Internet traffic and annoying bounce messages). If you want people to deviate from this standard practice you should ask them to do so. (Advanced mail users should set a Mail-Followup-To header that includes both the list address and their own address.) Bug#240656: xserver-xfree86: 5 second lock when switching from console to X with XFree 4.3

Thanks! This solves the problem partially for me, ie, the hang time goes down, but does not completely disappear. It goes down from about 5 seconds to about 1.5 seconds. Well, it's almost always going to take *some* amount of time to switch VT's. I've only seen something approaching lightning-fast VT switches on machines using fbcon and with video modes matched between the X server and virtual console. Disabling gpm is really not an option for me though, as I am a quite heavy console user. Okay. See below. gpm.conf is attached. Can you please try out its advice? * GPM users only: those who use the the GPM repeater as the XFree86 X server's mouse device should note that the mouse driver in XFree86 4.3.0 has been rewritten in such a way that using any protocol other than IntelliMouse on the XFree86 side and ms3 on the GPM side does not work well. If you have configured GPM as a repeater, are using it with the XFree86 X server, and are using anything other than ms3 as the repeating protocol, you will likely want to change it to ms3. If your XF86Config-4 file is automatically handled (see the news entry for xfree86 4.2.1-11) and uses /dev/gpmdata as the port for the configured mouse, the protocol will automatically be migrated to IntelliMouse if necessary. Otherwise, you will likely want to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file after installing this package to change any configured input devices using the mouse driver and /dev/gpmdata as the Device option to set the Protocol option to IntelliMouse. If you go back to using /dev/gpmdata for your XFree86 input device, but have GPM repeat as ms3 instead of imps2, does the situation improve? -- G. reassign 246267 xfree86 merge 227005 246267 thanks On Wed, Apr 28, 2004 at 12:41:25AM -0500, Mike Mestnik wrote: Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0-7 Severity: wishlist There is a patch on the DirectFB page that enables Xfree86 to use the DirectFB lib(allready pkgd in Debian). Here is the projects home page http://directfb.org/xdirectfb.xml. [The following is a form letter.] Hello, You recently filed a duplicate bug report against a Debian package; that is, the problem had already been reported. While there is often nothing inherently wrong with doing so, the filing of duplicate reports can cause Debian package maintainers to spend time performing triage and maintenance operations on bug reports (e.g., instructing the Debian Bug Tracking System to merge the duplicates) that could otherwise be spent resolving problems and doing other work on the package. One very good way to file bugs with the Debian Bug Tracking System is to use the reportbug package and command of the same name. A very nice feature of reportbug is that, if the machine where you run it has network access to the World Wide Web, it can query the Debian Bug Tracking System and show you existing reports. This reduces the chance that you'll file a duplicate report, and offers you the option of adding follow-up information to an existing bug report. This is especially valuable if you have unique information to add to an existing report, because this way information relevant to the problem is gathered together in one place as opposed to being scattered among multiple, duplicate bug reports where some facts may be overlooked by the package maintainers. The reportbug program also does a lot of automatic information-gathering that helps package maintainers to understand your system configuration, and also ensures that your message to the Debian Bug Tracking System is well-formed so that it is processed correctly by the automated tools that manage the reports. (If you've ever gotten a bounce message from the Debian Bug Tracking System that tells you your message couldn't be processed, you might appreciate this latter feature.) Therefore, I strongly urge you to give reportbug a try as your primary bug reporting tool for the Debian System. One way to install reportbug is with apt-get; for example: # apt-get install reportbug The reportbug command has a few different modes that cater to different levels of user expertise. If this message has contained a lot of jargon that is unfamiliar to you, you likely want to use reportbug's novice mode; here's one way to do that. $ reportbug --mode=novice Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem, or type 'other' to report a more general problem. If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version of Debian (stable), but instead Debian testing or unstable, you should use reportbug's standard mode. $ reportbug Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem, or type 'other' to report a more general problem. The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are: $ reportbug --help | more $ man reportbug (The output of the above commands has been omitted from this message.) Help with ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP
I'm looking for a kind soul to help me get X working on my ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP card in my HP Pavilion zv5120us laptop. I'm running Debian Sid with XFree 4.4.0 (I'd happily go back to 4.3.x if I knew how and knew it would get my card working better). I'm currently running X with the built-in radeon driver but I have no glx or any hardware 3D acceleration. Any help or pointers to help would be appreciated. I don't subscribe to debian-x, so please email me direct if you can provide assistance. lspci returns this about my card: :01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5835 Below is my XF86Config-4: # File generated by xf86config. # # Copyright (c) 1999 by The XFree86 Project, Inc. # # Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a # copy of this software and associated documentation files (the Software), # to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation # the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, # and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the # Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: # # The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in # all copies or substantial portions of the Software. # # THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED AS IS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR # IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, # FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT. Bug#240656: xserver-xfree86: 5 second lock when switching from console to X with XFree 4.3

[...] Content-Description: gpm.conf [...] device=/dev/psaux responsiveness= repeat_type=raw ^^^ type=imps2 append= sample_rate= I see you're repeating as imps2. The following item was recently Well, actually as raw, which would amount to imps2. added to the xfree86 package NEWS.Debian file, and will appear in the next release. Can you please try out its advice? Hmm, strange, I have apt-listchanges installed and never saw the notice. Maybe I just looked over it. That worked. Maybe this should be better documented, as in the past I tried various combinations and my previous configuration was the only one that worked. But still, I think the change is somewhat incorrect. A setting you expli- citly specify gets overridden by X without any notice. Anyway, thanks for the advice! kr, Chipzz AKA Jan Van Buggenhout -- UNIX isn't dead - It just smells funny [EMAIL PROTECTED]

xfree86 override disparity
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the override file for the following file(s): x-window-system-dev_4.3.0.dfsg.1-1_i386.deb: package says priority is extra, override says optional. Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why. [NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore this mail. Bug#240656: xserver-xfree86: 5 second lock when switching from console to X with XFree 4.3

It is attached to this mail. This is the already new version! I had the repeat type to raw, too. 2) Disable GPM and reconfigure XFree86 to talk directly to /dev/psaux or whatever port GPM was fastened to, and see if that causes the delay to go away. I had a strange problem when doing this. My mouse didn't work anymore in X. I have no idea why. Anyway, the problem about the 5 second lock was still there. I see you're repeating as imps2. The following item was recently added to the xfree86 package NEWS.Debian file, and will appear in the next release. Can you please try out its advice? Hmm, strange, I have apt-listchanges installed and never saw the notice. Maybe I just looked over it. The same goes for me. I also have apt-listchanges installed but didn't see the news item. If you go back to using /dev/gpmdata for your XFree86 input device, but have GPM repeat as ms3 instead of imps2, does the situation improve? Yes. The 5 second lock disappears. So the problem was obviously caused by this. But this solution still isn't comforting me. Now I have some strange bevaviour of my mouse. I do not know how to specify it, but it _feels_ different than before. And after some testing I even found a problem with the mouse. When the mousepointer is at the left side of the screen and I start shaking the mouse very fast from left to right and back again a lot, the pointer only moves in the left third of the screen. I think something like this is the cause of of the different feeling of the mouse. In any case, some package that has entered testing during the past week or so has caused my keyboard to behave badly under XFree86. Namely, when caps-lock is enabled, the shift key fails to produce the expected symbols on non-alphabetic keys. For example, Shift-5 yields '5' rather than '%'. The alphabetic keys work as expected (Shift-A yields 'a'). The console works correctly. I'm using a Dvorak layout and Japanese keyboard. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.5-patched Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages xfree86-common depends on: ii debconf 1.4.16 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.8.1 Miscellaneous utilities specific t -- debconf information: xfree86-common/experimental_packages: --- Received: (at 242987-done) by bugs.debian.org; 28 Apr 2004 20:39:14 + From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Apr 28 13:39:14 2004 Return-path: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Received: from port5.ds1-sby.adsl.cybercity.dk (trider-g7.fabbione.net) [212.242.169.198] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BIvpo-0003MQ-00; Wed, 28 Apr 2004 13:39:12 -0700 Received: from trider-g7.ext.fabbione.net (port5.ds1-sby.adsl.cybercity.dk [212.242.169.198]) by trider-g7.fabbione.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2A91629; Wed, 28 Apr 2004 22:39:09 +0200 (CEST) Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 22:39:05 +0200 (CEST) From: Fabio Massimo Di Nitto [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Closing bugs after 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 upload Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: QUOTED-PRINTABLE Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-1.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00,SORTED_RECIPS autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_03_25 X-Spam-Level: X-CrossAssassin-Score: 29 -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Due to an unfortunate error the upload has been

Unfortunately, it is dependant upon xlib6g, which seems to be absent in XFree86 4.3.0. Luckily, I recall reading somewhere that it should be possible to generate xlib6g if needed (it simply was omitted from the Debian release because almost nothing depends upon it nowadays, IIRC), but I do not remember what to enable in the building scripts to get the required xlib6g_version_arch.deb archive. Could you please tell me? Thanks! Alternately, if some existing 4.3.0 packages are supposed to Provides: xlib6g, libxaw6 this might work. If this is possible, could you tell me which packages to install?
