Bug#251686: X server crash
Package: xserver-xfree86Version: 4.1.0-16woody3 I have a problem running X server on my debian box. I ran the xf86config application and set up the configuration, but when I tried to start the server (xinit or startx), it crashed. The log file is attached. Note that the video card I am using is as follows: Matrox MGA-G200 (8192KB RAM) It seems that my configuration is incorrect, but I dont know what part of it is causing the server to crash.I am using Debian GNU/Linux 2.2.20, and libc6 2.3.1 Cheers, ange XFREE86.0 Description: Binary data

Bah, fuck. lspci changed out from under me. Excuse me for a few minutes while I get very angry. The template explains the old lspci format, not the new one. But anyway I did a similar mistake than your script by assuming the old behaviour. Right. I am unwilling to change the format of the BusID parameter that the XFree86 X server accepts. To do would render people's XF86Config-4 files incompatible between distributions. If you have suggestions for how the following can be improved, please offer them. Maybe a -X option to lspci that output XF86Config compatible ids would be nice. Also this would allow lspci -n to change output without breaking dexconf. Especially since lspci -n format is not documented. Yes. Would you file a wishlist bug against lspci, please? -- G. Bug#251037: Strange xdmcp behavior, maybe a trojan horse?
On Sun, May 30, 2004 at 01:00:23AM +0200, Bartłomiej Ochman wrote: First thing first, in my opinion xdm works perfectly well in all those situations. I think I understand now *why* it behaves this way. And what's worst, it can be assumed as the right behavior. :-( Hmmm. :( [...] So Xserver takes all the local IPs and sends them to a remote xdm process, allowing him to choose the best. When it's in the same subnet, it will choose local address (and that's why it worked for me within the same subnet), but what when all IPs are non-local? It will take the first one and will try to connect to it. Everything is OK according to RFCs. But on the other hand, loopback is only a local interface, which never sends packets to a network. So in my opinion, Xserver should never advertise its loopbacks. As far as I checked, it doesn't send 127.0.0.1, except the situation when connecting to it explicitely. I think it should never send *any* IP assigned to a loopback [sub]interface(s). Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's easy way to check, if an address is assigned to a loopback. Are there even C library funtions that expose this information? If not, I guess the only solutions are: 1) identify IP addresses associated with the loopback interface in one of xdm's config files (MAJORLY GROSS, one more thing to update when you reconfigure your network devices) 2) Hack up xdm to include Linux-specific code that queries /proc or someplace to find this information. Also majorly gross. Sending loopback would make sense only in a situation, when the Xserver is running on a multihomed box, with 2 (or more) interfaces which are available through different paths. But who runs Xserver on a BGP router? ;-) I guess, that a scenario in #4757 was as follow: First interface up was eth0, possibly with a private IP. Second interface up was ppp0 (so Xserver advertised private IP as the first one, and public as the second). It caused remote xdm connects to an unavailable IP. Would configuring interfaces in some explicit order solve my (and all other) problems? I'll try this next week. Okay. I can't do anything about this at present but I will await your findings. Bug#251307: xserver-xfree86: A problem with the new ATI driver: XVideo apps crash X server (on ATI Range IIc (Mach64) card)
Saturday 29 May 2004 13:45, Michel Dänzer rašė: X server symbols aren't automatically visible to modules though; they need to be exported with SYMFUNC() in xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/loader/xf86sym.c . It looks like that file was overlooked in the patch. Michel, thank you for the hint! I have made a patch (attached) according to your guidelines, put it into debian/patches and recompiled xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 And, yes, there is no message about the unresolved symbol in the log anymore. Moreover, a quick test revealed, that mplayer and kaffeine seem to work fine and, of course, X doesn't crash. Thus, I think, the bug is fixed! diff -uNr xc.old/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/loader/xf86sym.c xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/loader/xf86sym.c --- xc.old/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/loader/xf86sym.c 2004-05-30 20:07:16.0 +0300 +++ xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/loader/xf86sym.c 2004-05-30 20:07:44.0 +0300 @@ -569,6 +569,7 @@ SYMFUNC(xf86XVFreeVideoAdaptorRec) SYMFUNC(xf86XVFillKeyHelper) SYMFUNC(xf86XVClipVideoHelper) + SYMFUNC(xf86XVCopyYUV12ToPacked) /* xf86xvmc.c */ SYMFUNC(xf86XvMCScreenInit) pgpYGTZxdXGm3.pgp Description: signature

Bug#251776: x server startup causes keyboard timeouts
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 Severity: normal Latest versions of the X server seem to have difficulty initializing the keyboard. The problem occurs during initial invocation of the X server from xdm, also any time there is a switch from text back to X. The symptom is that numlock, capslock, syslock lights blink a few times, approximately once a second. After a few seconds the X server runs as normal, with the keyboard repeat rate in need of resetting. In rare occasions, the built in psaux mouse fails to work. This problem is seen with both 2.4.26 (from testing) and 2.4.24 (locally compiled) kernels. Hardware is a Compaq M700 laptop. /var/log/messages: May 30 16:15:54 juan kernel: Keyboard timed out[1] May 30 16:16:02 juan last message repeated 4 times juan:~$ lsmod Module Size Used byNot tainted autofs4 9876 1 (autoclean) serial 46692 0 (autoclean) mousedev4372 1 hid21796 0 (unused) usbmouse2296 0 (unused) input 3296 0 [mousedev hid usbmouse] eepro100 20276 1 (autoclean) mii 2400 0 (autoclean) [eepro100] uhci 25980 0 (unused) usbcore62892 1 [hid usbmouse uhci] rtc 7080 0 (autoclean) -- Package-specific info: Contents of /var/lib/xfree86/X.roster: xserver-xfree86 /etc/X11/X target unchanged from checksum in /var/lib/xfree86/X.md5sum. As you said, There is no way that this patch can be accepted...Don't bother reassigning it back to me because I will simply reassign it again with no warning.[3] I'm no longer the maintainer of the kernel package, so I suggest that you appeal to the new maintainers directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] If they're happy with the bug report, then I certainly will not stand in the way of you reassigning it. Bug#251808: xserver-xfree86: Debconf configuration refuses SBUS BusID string on SPARC
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 Severity: normal Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 I encountered this problem while configuring xfree86 on a Sun SparcStation 5 with an SBUS Sun TCX S24 framebuffer card installed. I created an initial config file using 'xf86cfg', but wanted to manage the config using dexconf. The critical piece of information that 'xf86cfg' provided to get X working on this machine was the bus ID of this card. When I ran 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86', I eventually came to the screen prompting for a bus ID. It appears to accept only PCI and AGP bus ID strings, but refused to accept my SBUS:/... string, saying it was invalid. Manually adding this BusID to the config file allows me to start X, but debconf refuses to accept this value. Below is the relevant section from the configuration that 'xf86cfg' provided. Sorry for not attaching more detail to this report, the machine is no longer on-site, but I can gather more info (if needed) with a phone call. The important piece of info here is the BusID. ## Begin XF86Config-4 block Section Device ### Available Driver options are:- ### Values: i: integer, f: float, bool: True/False, ### string: String, freq: f Hz/kHz/MHz ### [arg]: arg optional #Option SWcursor # [bool] #Option HWcursor # [bool] Identifier Card0 Driver suntcx BusID SBUS:/[EMAIL PROTECTED],1000/[EMAIL PROTECTED],10001000/SUNW,[EMAIL PROTECTED],80 EndSection ## End XF86Config-4 block Please note that I'm running reportbug from a different machine (an i386), so only the details in the body of my message are relevant to the real issue on SPARC. -- Package-specific info: Contents of /var/lib/xfree86/X.roster: xserver-xfree86 /etc/X11/X target unchanged from checksum in /var/lib/xfree86/X.md5sum.
