Bug#251686: X server crash

2004-05-30 Thread Prometheus

Package: xserver-xfree86Version: 4.1.0-16woody3

I have a problem running X server on my debian box. I
ran the xf86config application and set up the configuration, but when I tried
to start the server (xinit or startx),
it crashed. The log file is attached. Note that the video card I am using is as
follows:

Matrox MGA-G200 (8192KB RAM)

It seems that my configuration is incorrect, but I dont know what part of it is causing the server to crash.I am using Debian GNU/Linux 2.2.20, and libc6 2.3.1

Cheers,

ange

  fi

OK, that settle it: VIDEO_CARD is :01:00.0, which is the correct device,
but then DEFAULT is set incorrectly, apparently it expects a different lspci
 format.

Bah, fuck. lspci changed out from under me.

Excuse me for a few minutes while I get very angry.

The template explains the old lspci format, not the new one.
But anyway I did a similar mistake than your script by assuming
 the old behaviour.

Right.

I am unwilling to change the format of the BusID parameter that the
XFree86 X server accepts. To do would render people's XF86Config-4
  files incompatible between distributions.

If you have suggestions for how the following can be improved, please
  offer them.

Maybe a -X option to lspci that output XF86Config compatible ids would
be nice. Also this would allow lspci -n to change output without
breaking dexconf. Especially since lspci -n format is not documented.

Yes. Would you file a wishlist bug against lspci, please?

Okay, so this new four-digit value at the front of the PCI device ID, is
that the PCI domain? I'm pretty sure it's not the bus, slot/device, or
function.

Anyone?

(Did you know that the pciutils upstream changelog does not document
this format change?)

With the above configuration, can you use xev and tell us what key

Just for giggles, how about Left Alt?

Bug#251037: Strange xdmcp behavior, maybe a trojan horse?

2004-05-30 Thread Branden Robinson
On Sun, May 30, 2004 at 01:00:23AM +0200, Bartłomiej Ochman wrote:
First thing first, in my opinion xdm works perfectly well in all those
situations. I think I understand now *why* it behaves this way. And what's
worst, it can be assumed as the right behavior. :-(

Hmmm. :(

[...]
So Xserver takes all the local IPs and sends them to a remote xdm process,
allowing him to choose the best. When it's in the same subnet, it will
choose local address (and that's why it worked for me within the same
subnet), but what when all IPs are non-local? It will take the first one
and will try to connect to it.

Everything is OK according to RFCs. But on the other hand, loopback is only
a local interface, which never sends packets to a network. So in my
opinion, Xserver should never advertise its loopbacks. As far as I checked,
it doesn't send 127.0.0.1, except the situation when connecting to it
explicitely. I think it should never send *any* IP assigned to a loopback
[sub]interface(s). Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's easy way to check,
if an address is assigned to a loopback.

Are there even C library funtions that expose this information?

If not, I guess the only solutions are:

1) identify IP addresses associated with the loopback interface in one
of xdm's config files (MAJORLY GROSS, one more thing to update when
   you reconfigure your network devices)
2) Hack up xdm to include Linux-specific code that queries /proc or
someplace to find this information. Also majorly gross.

Sending loopback would make sense only in a situation, when the Xserver is
running on a multihomed box, with 2 (or more) interfaces which are
available through different paths. But who runs Xserver on a BGP router? ;-)

I guess, that a scenario in #4757 was as follow:
First interface up was eth0, possibly with a private IP. Second interface
up was ppp0 (so Xserver advertised private IP as the first one, and public
as the second). It caused remote xdm connects to an unavailable IP.

Would configuring interfaces in some explicit order solve my (and all
other) problems? I'll try this next week.

Okay. I can't do anything about this at present but I will await your
findings.

Thank you very much for researching this.

Hi, since i've update my Sid system to xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1-2, the
mapping i've defined in the file /etc/X11/Xmodmap is not supported
  anymore.

xmodmap has been deprecated for literally years.

If you would send us a copy of your /etc/X11/Xmodmap, perhaps we can
help you come up with a way to achieve what you want using XKB.

Thanks for the information. It sounds strange that it worked with the
last version of XFree86 in Sid.

Here is the copy of the file.

Bug#251769: xserver-xfree86: [ati/radeon] dark horizontal bars with fglrx module

2004-05-30 Thread Nathann Cohen
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-2
Severity: important
Tags: sid

Hello !

I just installed the fglrx module in order to use an ATI Radeon 9200Se
video card. The problem is that horizontal bars appears on the whole
screen. They aren't so visible, but make the fonts become less readable
( on a LCD Screen ).
However, fonts can be easily read when the text is between two
horizontal bars.

Bug#251307: xserver-xfree86: A problem with the new ATI driver: XVideo apps crash X server (on ATI Range IIc (Mach64) card)

2004-05-30 Thread Modestas Vainius

X server symbols aren't automatically visible to modules though; they

Michel, thank you for the hint! I have made a patch (attached) according to
your guidelines, put it into debian/patches and recompiled xfree86
4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 And, yes, there is no message about the unresolved symbol in
the log anymore. Moreover, a quick test revealed, that mplayer and kaffeine
seem to work fine and, of course, X doesn't crash. Thus, I think, the bug is
fixed!

Bug#249277: xserver-xfree86: [r128] Terrible performance with DRI enabled

On Fri, May 28, 2004 at 03:40:31AM -0500, Branden Robinson wrote:

Unfortunately, this seems to make things worse rather than better
(assuming I didn't stuff up the module build, which is possible).
Previously everything was just extremely slow but now the GDM login
dialog does not appear - I'm left sitting watching the default server
background with a watch cursor.

The rest of the system appears fine - there's no responsiveness problems
with SSH or anything.

I've attached the X server log.

Bug#251776: x server startup causes keyboard timeouts

2004-05-30 Thread Kostas Evangelinos
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4
Severity: normal

Latest versions of the X server seem to have difficulty initializing the
keyboard. The problem occurs during initial invocation of the X server from
xdm, also any time there is a switch from text back to X. The symptom is
that numlock, capslock, syslock lights blink a few times, approximately once
a second. After a few seconds the X server runs as normal, with the keyboard
repeat rate in need of resetting. In rare occasions, the built in psaux mouse
fails to work. This problem is seen with both 2.4.26 (from testing) and 2.4.24
(locally compiled) kernels. Hardware is a Compaq M700 laptop.

Bug#250655: xterm: crashes on paste from abiword

Just as a remark to myself and my fellow debian-xers, if it turns out
the bug is in Xt, this bug should be reassigned to libxt6.

I can reproduce it with XFree86 4.3.0. The immediate cause of failure is
dererencing a null pointer but that part of the code and the intervening
functions on the walkback appear much the same in 4.4.0 - so I expect the
cause is one of the other functions called before that point.

Here's a walkback (it doesn't make any difference whether it's for xterm #174
or xterm #190, so while it might ultimately be a bug in xterm, the difference
in behaviour - works with current X - is due to X libraries):

Bug#251359: Xmodmap and ThinkPad keys

In fact those keys are standard on all newer ThinkPads. They're
positioned in the lower right corner, right next to the up arrow.
Here's a picture I found on images.google.com:

Perhaps there should be a keyboard model 'thinkpad' that defines those
keys?

BTW, that mail was stuck on your machine until today.

However, I am supremely disinterested in playing your favorite sport
(bug tennis), so I guess this bug will languish until a kernel
person can be troubled to look at it, just like the last Toshiba laptop
keyboard problem you insisted wasn't the kernel's business to deal
with[1][2]. As you said, There is no way that this patch can be
accepted...Don't bother reassigning it back to me because I will simply
reassign it again with no warning.[3]

I'm no longer the maintainer of the kernel package, so I suggest that
you appeal to the new maintainers directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If they're happy with the bug report, then I certainly will not stand
in the way of you reassigning it.

Thanks,

Bug#251808: xserver-xfree86: Debconf configuration refuses SBUS BusID string on SPARC

2004-05-30 Thread David A. Riggs
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4
Severity: normal

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1

I encountered this problem while configuring xfree86 on a
Sun SparcStation 5 with an SBUS Sun TCX S24 framebuffer
card installed. I created an initial config file using
'xf86cfg', but wanted to manage the config using dexconf.
The critical piece of information that 'xf86cfg' provided
to get X working on this machine was the bus ID of this
card.

When I ran 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86', I eventually
came to the screen prompting for a bus ID. It appears to
accept only PCI and AGP bus ID strings, but refused to
accept my SBUS:/... string, saying it was invalid. Manually
adding this BusID to the config file allows me to start
X, but debconf refuses to accept this value.

Below is the relevant section from the configuration that
'xf86cfg' provided. Sorry for not attaching more detail
to this report, the machine is no longer on-site, but I
can gather more info (if needed) with a phone call. The
important piece of info here is the BusID.

## End XF86Config-4 block

Please note that I'm running reportbug from a different
machine (an i386), so only the details in the body of
my message are relevant to the real issue on SPARC.
