I encountered this problem while configuring xfree86 on a
Sun SparcStation 5 with an SBUS Sun TCX S24 framebuffer
card installed. I created an initial config file using
'xf86cfg', but wanted to manage the config using dexconf.
The critical piece of information that 'xf86cfg' provided
to get X working on this machine was the bus ID of this
card.

When I ran 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86', I eventually
came to the screen prompting for a bus ID. It appears to
accept only PCI and AGP bus ID strings, but refused to
accept my "SBUS:/..." string, saying it was invalid. Manually
adding this BusID to the config file allows me to start
X, but debconf refuses to accept this value.

Below is the relevant section from the configuration that
'xf86cfg' provided. Sorry for not attaching more detail
to this report, the machine is no longer on-site, but I
can gather more info (if needed) with a phone call. The
important piece of info here is the BusID.

Please note that I'm running reportbug from a different
machine (an i386), so only the details in the body of
my message are relevant to the real issue on SPARC.

The only function that is listed as unresolved is:

Symbol xf86XVCopyYUV12ToPacked from module
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/atimisc_drv.o is unresolved!

Which seems suspiciously like it's related to Xv.

Package: gdm
Version: 2.4.1.3-2
Severity: normal

I'm not really sure the bug is in the "gdm" package, so please reassign
to the proper package if the problem is somewhere else.

In our environment we have a central application-server (this machine's
packages are listed in this message) and about 10 ThinClients
connecting to it (I'm writing from one of them). The
ThinClients open an X server and then receive the gdm login from the
application-server.

The thing is, all our clients are using GNOME (1.4) as their GUI, and
they all used to appear in the list of users when I did "who".

But now only the most recent logged in user appears, this is because
each time a user logs in, his/her entry overrides the previous user's
entry.

And it works like this, if I log in from a :0 display (the main one in
all the thin clients) it overrides the previous :0 entry. If I log in
from a :1 display (also in the thin clients) it adds a new entry, but if
I then log from a different :1 display, it overrides the :1 previous
entry.

All the host names are different and inverse resolution works fine.

For example. I do "who" now:
gea t-gea.rivero:0 Jan 26 11:17 (t-gea.rivero)
maxy peperina.rivero:1 Jan 26 11:59 (peperina.rivero)

I log from a :1 display in my thin client:
gea t-gea.rivero:0 Jan 26 11:17 (t-gea.rivero)
franco t-marga.rivero:1 Jan 26 12:03 (t-marga.rivero)

("maxy" has not logged out, but he's not there anymore)

Now, I turn on an unused thin client and log from the main display:
jbg t-oval.rivero:0 Jan 26 12:09 (t-oval.rivero)
franco t-marga.rivero:1 Jan 26 12:03 (t-marga.rivero)

("gea" is not there anymore, though he's still logged in)

Now, if I log out from this sessions, it shows up not a single person
logged in. This is to say, once the sessions are overridden, they
can't reappear.

Trying to fix this up, I modified the /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default file,
changing the "exec" line to this:

- exec sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "$X_SERVERS" -h
"$REMOTE_HOST" -l $DISPLAY $USER
+ exec sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -h "$REMOTE_HOST" -l
"$DISPLAY" $USER

With this, the "who" command works fine, although I don't know if it
might do some collateral damage. If I understand correctly the -x option
tells the sessreg command which is the file to store the Xservers.

The X_SERVERS variable, with the ThinClients is something like:
/var/lib/gdm/t-gea.rivero:0.Xservers

So, it's using a different file each time. Maybe the value of the
variable should be changed, so that it's the same, no matter the machine
which is connecting ?

Whilst in use, X sometimes randomly crashes.
And whilst the workstation is not in use, X rockets up to using 99.9%
CPU and the screen locks up (on a single image), even after killing X over SSH.

In the X server log there are many instances of "(EE) R128(0): Idle
timed out, resetting engine..." towards the end.

A reboot is required to return the screen to normal again.

I'm running kernel 2.6.4 with Con Kolivas' kernel patchset.

I'm having regular xserver hangs on rage 128 hardware. I've seen this issue with
the normal and debug xservers in the testing branch. I don't have a call trace,
as the server doesn't actually crash. However, the xfree86 log ends like:
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The full log is at the end of the bug report.

Once hung, the console is completely gone (no switching to virtual consoles,
etc), but remote logins over ethernet work fine ...

I'm happy to provide more info or do more debugging if it would help -
let me know, I can usually reproduce this every couple of days.

Package: xscreensaver
Version: 4.14-4
Severity: critical

The screensaver "kumppa" freezes my system after running for a couple of
seconds: screen is frozen, keyboard is dead, only the mouse pointer still
moves.
I have reproduced the freeze consistently several times. The screensaver
_does_ work (it looks quite nice) before the freeze.

When the system is locked I can still ssh from another box normally. I tried
to repair the freeze as follows.
- If I try '/etc/init.d/kdm stop', this fails with the following message:
kdm not responding to TERM signal (pid 862)
- I can kill /usr/X11R6/bin/X, but this does not unfreeze the system.
- The only solution I found was to reboot.

I have not found anything in my logfiles or in ~/.xsession-errors.

I first discovered this problem when I started kumppa from within KDE 3.1.5,
but it also locks the computer when I:
- stop kdm
- start a xterm (run xinit from terminal)
- run xscreensaver-demo
- select kumppa

I have tested all screensavers available on my system and some don't seem to
work, but kumppa is the only one that freezes my system.
If more information or testing is wanted, I'll be happy to help.

The British variant of the Macintosh keyboard layout on my Powerbook has
one fairly annoying problem: the keyboard has no # on it. The way Apple
solves this is to make meta-3 generate #.

(I'm at debcamp if you want to examine this directly.)

xfree86 override disparity

2004-06-16 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

x-window-system-dev_4.3.0.dfsg.1-5_i386.deb: package says priority is extra,
override says optional.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

[NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one
like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore
this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in
due course, but until then the installer will send these automated
mails; sorry.]

The code in xc/programs/Xserver/xfree86/hw/xfree86/os-support/bus/linuxPci.c
doesn't handle PCI Domains, so the X server fails to find the entry for the
video card under /proc.

This problem manifests itself with kernel 2.6.x.

Here's a simple patch to fix it, it first tries the old-style /proc/bus/pci
access, then tries to access it with the PCI Domain information as well.

I've only tested this on an Ultra 5 workstation with the testing distro.

On Gnome, after clicking the "Log Out" button from the "Actions" menu
and after clicking "OK" on the GUI that appears ("Are you sure you
want to log out?") gnome is not able to close down the session to
another login screen as long one or more xterms are open:

I have to hover the mouse pointer over the xterms to make them
disappear: And only when they're exited Gnome closes down X to a new
login screen.

This behaviour does not happen, when other apps like Mozilla, Emacs
etc are running: Those are closed down appropriately by Gnome before
logging me out to an new login screen.

Just upgraded here from 2.4.22 to
2.4.24-ben1
drm-trunk-module-2.4.24-ben1
to see if it helps, but to no avail so far ...

TIA

Best Regards
Wolfgang

Severity: normal

When the X-Resource XTerm*openIm ist set to false, starting xterm
results in a long time where nothing happens, and finally it crashes
with a segfault.

It is reproducible with:
xterm -xrm "XTerm*openIm: False"

When stracing (and searching for open in the ouput) it, it seems
to endlessly do the following:

open("/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias", O_RDONLY) = 5
open("/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.dir", O_RDONLY) = 5
open("/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias", O_RDONLY) = 5

open("/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/iso8859-15/Compose", O_RDONLY) = 5
(And here it starts from the beginning)

setting LC_ALL and LANG to C does not improve the situation.

This is on a virgin Sarge installation after initial X configuration. It
happens reproducibly using d-i beta4 and daily 040528.

If the BusID line is commented out in the Device section, X starts
successfully (albeit with a suboptimal resolution of 800x600).

Cheers
Andree

please update the override files to reflect the new package status.

The change has been done to be policy compliant and "optional" is not.

Thanks

Bug#213286: workaround (fix?)

2004-06-16 Thread Vineet Kumar
I've been dealing with font ugliness lately. I found that installing
gsfonts-x11 gave me really ugly fonts in emacs21 and also in all Tk
applications (tkabber, offlineimap). I was seeing output like
(paraphrased from memory): 'Cannot convert string
"-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct'
when starting these applications.

Removing gsfonts-x11 gave me the dreaded emacs empty boxes problem,
though my Tk apps looked much nicer (though they also looked like they
were just using wrong fonts: some fixed-width font instead of the
requested Helvetica).

I fixed my workstation today by following advice found in The Debian
Reference ยง9.4.13

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-tune.en.html#s-xfs-tt

Specifically, moving Type1 down to the bottom of the list did the trick.
My Files section now looks like this:

Section "Files"
FontPath"unix/:7100"# local font server
# Scalable TrueType and CID Fonts (via DeFoMa):
FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"
FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID"
# if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

You'll notice I also placed 75dpi above 100dpi. It was working before this,
but the displayed fonts were very large -- I'm running at a resolution
of 72x72, so this switch gives more realistic font sizes.

If there is anything else I can do to clarify this situation (e.g.
switch my FontPath entries back to the old way and report some more
systematic test results with actual pasted error messages), please let
me know so that I can test and report back my results. This was a very
aggravating problem, so I'm eager to help in any way to make sure new
users never have to encounter it.

good times,
Vineet

Hi! I'm trying to upgade my old motherboard Soltek 75KAV to Soltek based

I'm getting screen filled with trash and system hangs...
can someone help me understand what could it be and is there some way to

on my old motherboard everything was working just fine :-\
any ideas what could cause this?

PS I'm on the 2.6.7 but 2.6.6 didn't work for me as well.

I'll recompile the XFree86 package without this patch and check whether

I think it's a little more general than that. The AbiWord case breaks
when one pastes UTF-8 text into xterm, and seems to be a bug in the X
libraries.

No, since in my case problem is not specific to AbiWord. Xterm always
crashes when I try to paste into xterm window, no matter which app has
the selection.

#250655 says xterm crashes with AbiWord only if I understand it
correctly.

Bug#254565: two cursors

2004-06-16 Thread Timo Aaltonen

Hi

I can confirm this bug. I have a SuperSavage IX/C SDR chip on my
Thinkpad T23. "Someone" changed my cursor-theme to the one from
industrial-theme, and I suddenly got two cursors. Changing
the driver to disable HWCursor fixed this, but shouldn't it be disabled by
default when using a LCD-panel? (as it says on the manpage)

Try changing these to XTerm*vt100.font1, etc.

Also, see the discussion in xterm manpage about utf8Fonts.

Just to be complete, I filed this bug against XTerm as other
applications (e.g. Emacs) seem to have no problem picking the *.font
declaration.

xterm crashes with segmentation fault when i middle click or press
shift+insert inside xterm. gnome-terminal doesn't crash.

It seems xterm started to crash after I upgraded it to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4
version today.

Bug#254650: xterm doesn't see font information in X resources anymore

2004-06-16 Thread Hugo Haas
Package: xterm
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4
Severity: important

Hi,

I just upgraded from 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4, and my XTerms
are now all using the fixed font, disregarding the font information in
the X resources database:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~> xrdb -query
  *.font: -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal-*-*-160-*-*-c-*-iso10646-1
  *customization: -color
  Display.cache: 2

  Rxvt.cursorColor: Red
  Rxvt.font1:

  Rxvt.font2:
  -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--14-140-72-72-c-80-iso8859-15
  Rxvt.font3:
  -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--20-200-72-72-c-100-iso8859-15
  Rxvt.foreground:White
  Rxvt.geometry: 79x27
  Rxvt.saveLines: 1024
  Rxvt.scrollBar: False
  Rxvt.visualBell:true
  XLock*logoutButton: -1
  XTerm*background: Black
  XTerm*color12: RoyalBlue1
  XTerm*color4: Blue
  XTerm*cursorColor: Red
  XTerm*eightBitInput:false
  XTerm*font1:
  -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--0-0-72-72-c-0-iso8859-15
  XTerm*font2:
  -xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal--14-140-72-72-c-80-iso8859-15
  XTerm*font3:

  XTerm*foreground: White
  XTerm*geometry: 79x27
  XTerm*saveLines:1024
  XTerm*scrollBar:False
  XTerm*utf8: 1
  XTerm*visualBell: true
  emacs.background: Black
  emacs.cursorColor: Red
  emacs.foreground: White

With this, running 'xterm -fn
-xos4-terminus-medium-r-normal-*-*-160-*-*-c-*-iso10646-1' brings up
an XTerm with the right font, but 'xterm' doesn't.

I tried setting '*.font', '*font', 'XTerm*font' without much success.

The rest of the resources seem to be processed fine.

Regards,

Hugo

Mmmm, yes.

Mmm, yes.

Take one of the smaller font packages (one with only one font if you can
find one), remove it, and re-run xfontsel.

Does it still report 32767 matching names?

If so, we definitely have a bug, though whether it's causing your crash
or not remains to be seen.
