can see below, so I tag this bug as being unreproducible. I have no
more idea at the moment to solve this bug, sorry.

 You can run
  $ xkbcomp server-0.xkb-4.3.0.dfsg.1-6 :0
in a Failsafe session or by running X manually to see if this bug still
occurs when no window manager is launched.

I forgot to mention that xkbcomp reports warnings, they are harmless.

I've found an acceptable solution to this. If I use the sawfish
binding dialog, and say Grab, and then press Windows-Left (or
whatever), sawfish reports that as H-Left, and it works. So for the
moment everything's OK if I change sawfish's setting for its default
modifer to Hyper rather than Super.

xmodmap shows:
mod4Super_L (0x7f), Hyper_L (0x80)

So I suspect there's some confusion between the keys and modifiers in
sawfish: perhaps when it reads the event of a Windows keypress, it
reads mod4 and then turns that into Hyper (the first in alphabetical
order) or something. I'm not sure whether this is an actual bug in
sawfish or not, however---I find it confusing, but possibly something
else (something in GNOME, for example) is setting the modifiers oddly
because of some old bit of configuration I have.

Thanks very much for the links to documentation about the xkb
configuration formats---this is an area that seems poorly documented
(perhaps reasonably, since most of us shouldn't touch it other than to
select options). It might be worth adding the links to the FAQ?

This looks like http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=263076,
but there's nothing in the bug report that suggests a workaround or fix.

I'm a little nervous about ending my X session in case it can't be

There is nothing wrong on your side, XKB enhances core X protocol
(for instance to provide multiple layouts) whereas some applications
refuse to deviate from this core protocol. I did my best to provide
patches so that these applications can interact better with XKB
(without any trouble for other users), and am quite disappointed by
the lack of interest shown by maintainers. Maybe users should
complain more loudly?

Thanks very much for the links to documentation about the xkb
configuration formats---this is an area that seems poorly documented
(perhaps reasonably, since most of us shouldn't touch it other than to

These documents give useful advice for writing layouts, but users need
information on configuration. After sarge, users should be able to
customize their XKB settings, these docs will then surely be more
helpful.

OK, I understand now. This *is* a sawfish bug (perhaps made more
obvious by other GNOME bugs), but the maintainer doesn't feel inclined
to fix it because upstream development has effectively ceased. I
think it's a bit disappointing (I much prefer sawfish to metacity)
since I think bugfixing is still happening upstream and I suspect this
is the kind of thing that might be fixed, but it's quite
understandable.

Bug#274103: xlibs: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 broke Meta for Emacs

2004-09-29 Thread Roland Mas
Package: xlibs
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8
Severity: normal

Once upon a time, things were nice. My Alt key produced Alt things,
my Leftwin key produced Meta things, Rightwin was Compose/Multi-key
and Menu was Menu. So I started binding useful commands on Alt-* in
Emacs.

Then X evolved, and Alt-stuff started producing Meta-stuff. Bummer.
Then things evolved some more, and Leftwin-stuff produced
Hyper-Super-Meta-stuff. Bummer again, but Emacs was still usable
(even though it lacked my Alt-* shortcuts).

Then came along the dreaded 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8, last night. Its changelog
mentioned stuff related to altwin, so I was delighted. I promptly
upgraded, restarted X and Emacs, and was shocked to discover that it
was more broken than the day before: Alt-stuff is back to generating
Alt-stuff, which is cool since I can now goto-line and boxquote-region
and the like in one key combo, but Leftwin-stuff is still generating
the hubristic Hyper-Super-Meta-stuff combo. So I'm left with an Emacs
without a Meta key, which means I have to use Esc+w, Esc+q, Esc+y,
etc. I'd like it if I could go back to §1 please...

Bug#274093: xserver-xfree86: windows disappear from gnome task-list when dragged to 2nd monitor under Xinerama

2004-09-29 Thread Xavier Bestel
Just FYI, I have sensibly the same setup (GNOME 2.8 from experimental,
otherwise up-to-date unstable, Xinerama with 2 cards, an ATI AIW Pro and
a NVIDIA TNT2) and I don't see this problem.

Bug#273993: Fails to start when rebooting after upgrading

2004-09-29 Thread Michelle Konzack
If you send a strace, please send it as GNUZIP or BZIP2 file.
Your file was coming in as PKZIP file and with the false/broken encoding.

'mutt' has viewed it as crapy TEXT file. See below...
