hmm it looks like you have the nvidia-glx package installed. Please do
apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx
or deinstall the nvidia binay packages and run the compilation again.

Let us know if this is the problem

2004-10-07 Thread Myrtle Mcfadden
Remember back when you and I used to file share? Check this out -
http://www.promodiscounts.com/ref44.html
You can just about download any CD album you want to. Not to mention console
games and dvd's. I've already downloaded 5 console games and music CD's..
Once you've seen it get ahold of me, I want to hear your reaction - you'll go
batty I know it.
Theres a few pages in there on how to get your selection on CD if you need the
help.
I noticed in the movie section over lunch, they have titles for download that
are still in theaters - it's fantastic.
I'll see you next Friday at the get together.

Bug#275318: xserver-xfree86: A typo in an error message

It's funny when you search for this error message on Google: a
spell-checked query is offered, obviously, which in turn will yield no

Bug#275329: xdm creates utmp entry but doesn't delete it

2004-10-07 Thread Ian Bruce
Package: xdm
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4

The xdm Xstartup script writes to the utmp file when an X session
begins, but this entry is not removed later, falsely implying that the
user is still logged in after their X session ends.

This problem can be corrected in the Xreset script, which is not
currently distributed with xdm. This procedure is mentioned in both the
xdm and sessreg manpages.

Xreset script follows.

#!/bin/sh
# Xreset script to remove utmp entry created by Xstartup

PATH=$PATH:/usr/bin/X11

if grep -qs '^use-sessreg' /etc/X11/xdm/xdm.options \
   which sessreg /dev/null 21; then
  exec sessreg -d -l $DISPLAY -u /var/run/utmp \
   -x /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers $USER
  # NOTREACHED
fi

exit 0

# end of Xreset script

Bug#274607: xserver-xfree86: problems with XKB settings on a Sun type5/type6 keyboard

 Hi,

 As discussed on IRC today:

There seems to be a problem with the XKB map on a Sun Type5 (or Type6,
which is hardware-compatible) keyboard. Everything is mapped correctly
for 'normal' work, but special key sequences (I currently tested
ctrl-alt-bksp (to kill the server) and ctrl-alt-function key (to
switch to a different virtual console)) don't work by default.

This can be worked around by using 'us+srvr_ctrl' as a keymap instead of
 plainly 'us'.

I just committed a fix, but would like to check something.
Could you please run
  $ xkbcomp :0
and send me the two server-0.xkb files generated by this command, with
and without loading srvr_ctrl?

It also seems that these key sequences are not defined for Macintosh.
Branden, should this be fixed too?

Denis

Issue:
X-server crashes when starting xine or gxine.
Logs and configs below (from reportbug).

To reproduce:
- Configure X to load extmod.
- Install xine
- Start X
- Start xine
- (may be specific to (some) ATI cards)

Removing the extmod module through dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
solves the problem, but xine then says:

bash$ xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.1.
(c) 2000-2003 The xine Team.
Xlib: extension SHAPE missing on display :0.0.
Xlib: extension XVideo missing on display :0.0.

...but xine seems to work correctly.

Also:
bash# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
start_configlet: configlet in path /usr/share/configlets/xserver-common
is bad

Some info:

Well, thinking more about these issues, I believe Xbae is buggy, too.
 Granted,
negative min width in this specific case is an X server bug, but in general,
negative values are legitimate when a font has all or some chars with the
 RtoL directionality.

 I suspect it's a freetype module bug.

 http://www.mail-archive.com/lesstif%40hungry.com/msg00025.html

I'll take your word for it, but I'm going to need help understanding what
the freetype module's actual bug is.

If it's not out of spec for a font to have a negative minimum width due to
directional issues, then why isn't it just the fault of client-side code
that assumes minimum font widths are always positive?

but there's nothing in the bug report that suggests a workaround or fix.

I'm a little nervous about ending my X session in case it can't be
 restarted. Any suggestions?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you about this.

A real kludge of a workaround would be to modify the package's installed
postinst script to not die if update-configlets dies, and then tell dpkg to
configure the package again.

$ editor /var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xfree86.postinst
[go to the end of the file]
[change the line:
update-configlets
 to:
update-configlets || warn update-configlets failed
]
$ dpkg --configure --pending

Jeff Licquia has given me a patch to effectuate the migration to the new
python-gtk bindings. I plan to apply that patch, or one much like it.

I think man xinit is nicer, since it shows you that display -- if given
-- must be the first argument.

I agree that these command synopses should be improved. startx's synopsis
is better in the respect that it makes clear that multiple option arguments
can be specified.

The problem is therefore likely driver-specific.

This might be related to bug #176091
I have added the following lines to my XF86Config-4 file:
# because acceleration hardware might have problems.
Option XaaNoSolidBresenhamLine
Option XaaNoSolidHorVertLine
Option XaaNoSolidTwoPointLine
This made the problem going away.

So this bug report is adding information that this problem in the XAA

that somehow those configuration lines should be suggested for affected
cards if this really is a hardware problem (note that #176091 only
mentions Ati Radeon which makes a bug in Xfree more likely).

The code in xc/programs/Xserver/xfree86/hw/xfree86/os-support/bus/linuxPci.c
doesn't handle PCI Domains, so the X server fails to find the entry for the
video card under /proc.

This problem manifests itself with kernel 2.6.x.

Here's a simple patch to fix it, it first tries the old-style /proc/bus/pci
access, then tries to access it with the PCI Domain information as well.

I've only tested this on an Ultra 5 workstation with the testing distro.

Sorry it's taken a while to follow-up to this report.

A copy of the XFree86 X server's logfile when it is in this locked state
would be helpful.

That file is probably /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

When I start the X server from the shell by typing X, it puts the monitor
into powersave mode. The reason for this could also be that the video mode
chosen by X is not acceptable for the monitor.

I use an S3 Trio 64V+ with an Scott monitor by Zulauf Display GmbH, Germany.
Other hardware I use includes two NE2000-compatible PCI Ethernet cards, a
sound card which uses the es1371 kernel module, a Microsoft Natural Keyboard
Pro and a IMPS/2-compatible wheel mouse. Both the keyboard and the mouse are
attached via USB. I use kernel 2.4.18-bf24 from woody.

The problem occurs with and without X configured to use the framebuffer
device. The X server settings are (at least, approximately) those, I use
for woody. Especially, the settings for horizontal and vertical sync
ranges are exactly those, I have always used on woody and are exactly those
given in my monitor's documentation. Under woody, I use xserver-s3, version
 3.6. Everything works fine there.

I checked the configuration of my woody xserver-s3 (which has version 3.3.6,
of course, not 3.6 as I told you) and discovered that I use only a color
depth of 16 there. So the configuration of xserver-xfree86 4.3.0 was not so
close to my woody configuration as I suggested. Sorry.

When I change the depth to 24 under woody, xserver-s3 shows me No valid
 modes
found.. So obviously the lack of suitable 24 bit color depth modes leads to
the problem with sarge's xserver-xfree86. I changed the color depth to 16
 under sarge and it worked.

Here is a complete overview of the results when trying the two different X
servers with the color depths 16 and 24:

xserver-s3, version 3.3.6 (woody) with color depth 16:
 works fine

xserver-s3, version 3.3.6 (woody) with color depth 24:
 shows No valid modes found.

xserver-xfree86, version 4.3.0 (sarge) with color depth 16:
 works fine

xserver-xfree86, version 4.3.0 (sarge) with color depth 24:
sends monitor to powersave mode (or chooses a video mode, the monitor
 cannot handle)

I would say, of course, that xserver-xfree86 4.3.0 should also give an error
message instead of sending the monitor asleep. ;-)

Sorry it has taken a while to get back to you about this.

It's probably trying to drive the monitor at a frequency the monitor
doesn't like. Do you have the monitor configured as per the manufacturer's
recommendations?

Bug#229850: DEFAULT_HORIZ_SYNC and DEFAULT_VERT_REFRESH still ignored (updated patch)

2004-10-07 Thread Jay Berkenbilt

I tried these new configuration files today, but I had a lot of
problems with them and didn't really get anywhere. I'll look again
this weekend in hopes of being able to provide some useful feedback.
Even with dpkg -P --force-depends xserver-xfree86, the get-edid part
of the config script never seemed to get run. Also, several things
that used to have defaults (I forget the exact questions, but they
were keyboard questions whose answers were xfree86, pc104, and
us) didn't forcing me to actually enter something for those. When I
got all the way through the questions, the configuration blew out
because I didn't have an identifier for the monitor. When I restarted
with low priority, I was prompted for the video card and monitor
identifiers without defaults. In the past, those used to be
automatically detected. (Well, at least the monitor was, but the lack
of autodetection of the video card is probably a discover problem
which has already been reported.)

Also, the templates file had fields _Description and _Choices. I
clobbered the leading _ to get debconf to not complain and to actually
display the text.

Let me know if I should work more with these or whether there will be
other files to try. By the way, I'm running 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 now. I
most likely won't have time again before the weekend.

Just wondering... how are you testing these scripts? I imagine this
must be very difficult to test without a wide array of hardware.
