Bug#121297: the University of Hannover just loves SORBS, no matter how many false positives it generates

2004-12-13 Thread Branden Robinson
Helge Kreutzmann is going on my blacklist.

I'm not going to try communicating with him[1] further because he won't be
able to see my messages anyway -- as noted below, my IP is "black-listet"
[sic].

I encourage other subscribers to this list to similarly refrain from
communicating with him as a means of social pressure to motivate him to use
an ISP that doesn't utilize reckless blacklists like SORBS, but of course
that is a personal decision for each of you.

Bottom line: until he makes an effort to hear me, I'm not going to bother
continue talking to him.

After a few hours of X running, it seems actually that both removing
the xlibmesa-dri and disabling the DRI in the X server configuration
prevents the occurence of the lockup (I am still setting memory
limitation to 128 Mb as explained previously). I cannot be completely
sure as I have no reproducible way to trigger the problem (but I do
not recall the machine having run that long flawlessly). I will
perform the same tests with the -9 packages as soon as they hit my
mirror.

Mini-Installreport

2004-12-13 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Hello,

I installed a Debian sarge System for a friend and tried to write down what
makes Debian for an unexperienced Linux user difficult. Amazingly, these a
quite few items...or in other words Sarge is impressive! We used two DVDs
which are about a month old, maybe some of the issues are already resolved.

1. The installer talks continously about CDs...but we used a two DVD set.
Somewhat confusing...

2. Scanning for index files took quite long. It would have been helpful, if
there would be a progress bar or whatever to show that the system is still
alive.

3. The X config improved a lot over woody. Nevertheless it is still too
difficult for a user with little or none Linux experience. Also we did not
get good support for the nvidia adapter, resulting in an unusable tuxracer. I
need to help him to get good support for his nvidia sound card...(pointers
are welcome, we installed a 2.6 kernel ;-)

4. For openoffice a meta package would have been useful. It is hard to
understand for a non-linux guru which he has to search for all kind of
components to get a German openoffice installation.

5. Getting internet access with an AVM ISDN card (FritzCard USB) is impossible
for an unexperienced Linux user. Most likely there is little Debian can do
here, the license restrictions are prohibiting any reasonable distribution...

Please follow-up to the appropriate list and try to avoid an reply all.

Thanks,
Rainer

This is by purpose, please read #270235. You can define a MultiKey key
with compose:* options, see /etc/X11/xkb/rules/xfree86.lst

Bug#285485: xfree86 packages upgrade to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-9 from 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 for 2.6.9 kernels fails nvidia driver

2004-12-13 Thread James D. Freels
Package: xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-9

With the recent upgrade in all the xfree86 packages from -8 to -9 of
Debian/Sid, I discovered a bug when using the commercial nvidia drivers.
This bug does not appear when using the xfree86 nv drivers. It also
does not appear when using the 2.4.28 kernel. Only the 2.6.9 kernel
caused the problem (I only tested 2.4.28 and 2.6.9). I have installed
the commercial nvidia drivers in vanilla fashion directly from the
vendor. I have used the "--force-tls=classic" switch which is required
for some of my legacy applications.

The symptom is that Xfree86 fails on startup. No (EE) messages are
produced. Only the following error message is produced (nvidia driver,
2.6.9 kernel).

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

I worked around the problem by using the 2.4.28 kernel. I presently
cannot use the 2.6.9 kernel.

I expect this bug will be rejected since the nvidia driver is not part
of xfree86. However, since one purpose of this new upgrade may be to
include the packages in Sarge, and since there are Debian packages for
the installation of the commercial nvidia drivers, I felt it important
to disclose this bug.

Ok, then I'll see that it gets into the ibook HOWTO-pages, because
right now the default keyboard is simply *broken* (you can access only
the "ordinary" letters, no [, no { no @). And it looks like every
non-US apple user has to pull his/her own keyboard layout.

The major thing to be decided is weather the ibook/powerbook keyboard
should match the OSX-layout or the PC layout. Since almost no extra
mappings (like [, {) are printed on the keyboard, this is mostly a
political question (a choice preferred, thought).

If you need me to test new keyboard layouts when it is time, please
contact me (but I only have a german ibook).

Thanks for taking care

Helge

objdump -p /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 | grep NEEDED
might be more interesting, as it only shows direct dependencies.

Crusoe-Bug with XFree86 / How to patch?

2004-12-13 Thread Ilja Gerhardt
Hi there...

I am using Debian Sarge and I have a crusoe processor. Due to a hardware
bug in the processor, it is not possible to use allways X -

see e.g.:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=3D216933

On the following page a workarond is described:

http://www.cs.auc.dk/~fleury/bug_cms/

I fetched the source with apt-get source & am able to build the package
with dpkg-buildpackage...

Also I am able to see hunderds of patches in

/root/source/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/patches

But: How do I supply an additional patch (passing -O1
-fomit-frame-pointer to my gcc) - I tried to manage this... But I am
still a bit clueless. Where is the gcc command to pass it? Should I pass
it to CcCmd? There are hunderds of gcc defined with different rules all
over the place -

I would be glad, if you could give me a hint how to write a patch to the
program.

Best whishes from Zurich

Ilja

I cannot reproduce this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -l xlibmesa-gl
ii xlibmesa-gl4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 Mesa 3D graphics library [XFree86]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux downhill 2.6.7.fb #1 Sun Jul 18 15:42:00 CEST 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ldd /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libpthread.so.0
(0x4007c000)
libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x4008d000)
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x4009b000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libdl.so.2 (0x40162000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 (0x40165000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x8000)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ md5sum /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2
40a0ed79d1afe96697964df889af470b /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2

Perhaps "/usr/sbin/dpkg-divert --list '*lib*'" might help us.
