Bug#286631: xbase-clients: the xconsole menu should use sudo

2004-12-21 Thread Pascal A. Dupuis
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hello,

a small problem with the menu entry for xconsole in xbase-clients:
normal user can't/shouldn't use it, but with the actual conf, only
root can use this from the window menu. Why not define it using sudo,
so that selected users can access it directly from the menu ? Patch
included to show how I implemented it locally.

Best regards

Pascal Dupuis

Why do you think there should be one? I can't see anything in Branden's mail
that implies there is.

If you're referring to the `upstream' tag, that doesn't mean `exists in
upstream's bts', it means `bug is in upstream's code, not Debian packaging,
patches, etc'. (The `forwarded' tag means the former, for reference).

Bug#270976: xlibs: doesn't understand IRIX xinerama X servers

2004-12-21 Thread Matt Reynolds
Thought I should point out that SGI have logged a bug against their
Xinerama X server and fixed this incompatibility with 6.5.27 onwards.

Basically Xsgi with xinerama enabled is telling the client that it has a
single screen (logically enough), and then proceeding to pass xscreen
dimensions for the two (or more) physical screens that make up the
logical screen. Hence the overflow of bytes. It's only since Xfree
started checking for unused bytes in this setup message that the problem
was noticed.

Apologies for pushing this out as a debian/xfree problem when it was
really ours... :(

As a more general comment, Xsgi's xinerama extension complies to a
different version of Xorg's standard than the one that most vendors have
implemented. It's a bit of a minefield. I've noticed many gnu/linux
packages that don't quite work right with Xsgi.. *sigh*

Feel free to close this one down.

Bug#275735: xserver-xfree86-dbg: Removing DRI module does not help

2004-12-21 Thread David Decotigny

Hi,

Sorry for the big delay. I just powered on my ibook: now I can confirm
what Frederic noticed. By removing xlibmesa-dri and commenting out
everything that is related to DRI (and even AGP), it seems to work
flawlessly. However the dri module is still in the list of the X
config file, and the radeon kernel module is still loaded (as well as
the AGP GART).

Now that it seems to work, I'm going to re-use the ibook more regularly.
I'll spend some time one day investigating the problem a little further.

Attached is my XF86 config file.

Thanks A LOT everybody ! I guess the ibook will work intensively during

Bug#283001: /usr/X11R6/bin/X: SEGV with blender

2004-12-21 Thread Xavier Bestel
Hi,

here is the config file. I couldn't get a backtrace: when segfaulting,
XFree86-debug starts to write a coredump, and then stays there eating
100% CPU doing nothing (strace hangs) and unkillable. The core isn't
recognized by gdb (but file says it's a corefile from 'XFree86').

I don't really know what to do then.

Bug#270561: xserver-xfree86: Fatal server error: Caught signal 11

2004-12-21 Thread Kingsley G. Morse Jr.
Hi Branden,

I hope this message finds you well.

Happy Holidays!

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that X hasn't crashed on my box
for weeks.

The bad news is that I don't know why it was
crashing.

My best guess is that switching from an OSS sound
driver to ALSA for a VT8233A audio chip solved the
problem, but frankly, I'm guessing.

It's OK with me if you close this bug report.

Keep up the good work,
Kingsley

  Unfortunately, no.

In fact, X crashed most recently while I wasn't using it, so I'm unaware
of anything in particular to focus on.

However, I agree in principle with narrowing down the cause of the crash.

Can X be coaxed to elicit more verbose diagnostics, like a stack trace,
  for example?

No; the log file is as verbose as the X server gets.

However, a backtrace can be coaxed out of the X server if you run the
debugging version of the package and install GDB.

[The following is a form letter.]

Can you reproduce the problem with xserver-xfree86-dbg? Install the
package and tell debconf you want to use that X server. Then restart the X
server and try to reproduce the bug (should be easy). If it doesn't crash,
let us know. If it does crash, become root, enable core dumps (ulimit -c
unlimited in bash), start the X server as root and reproduce the crash
 again:

 # startx $(which x-terminal-emulator) -- :1

(If no X server is running at DISPLAY=:0, you can leave off the -- :1
 part).

This will launch the X server running a lone terminal client with no window
manager. Run the client that provokes the crash from the terminal prompt.
If the X server crashes, it should leave a core dump in /etc/X11.

We then run the GNU Debugger, GDB, on the core file and executable. We're
interested in a backtrace of execution. The X server has a signal handler
in it so it can do things like exit gracefully (restoring the text console,
and so forth), so we're not actually interested in all the stack frames --
just those above the signal handler.

Here's an example GDB session I logged after provoking an artificial server
 crash (with kill -SEGV).

I have a dual-head setup. Screen 0 is driven by a NVidia card, with
the NVidia proprietary driver, and screen 1 is a Matrox G200 with the
 normal mga driver.

This is an unsupported configuration. The GLX implementation of the
proprietary nvidia driver is not compatible with the one from XFree86.
