Hello, Hadmut. Could you please replace

When starting with sarge, xserver-xfree86 stays on the computer and
 xserver-xorg isn;t installed if you don't have the x-window-system-core
 metapackage installed.

 Possible solutions:

 1.:
 - create a xserver-xfree86 transition package that depends on
   xserver-xorg
 - version the xserver-xfree86 conflict in xserver-xorg
 - drop the xserver-xfree86 transition package after the release
   of etch

 2.:
 - let xserver-common conflict with xserver-xfree86
 - drop the Provides: xserver-xfree86 from xserver-xorg
 - all other packages depending on xserver-xfree86 have to
   adjust their dependencies

Both are possible solutions, but I'd personally slightly prefer
 the second one.

I am with you, the second one is cleaner, but I think that breaks more
things
that the first one. When we will ask to the FTPmasters to remove remaining
XFree86 packages, several things will be uninstallable. However, given the
current state of sid, it would be unimportant to break even more things. ;-)

I would like to consult to the release team before making up our minds.
Maybe
they have a preferred way to go.

Best regards,

Ender.

PS: I do not think that this bug deserves important severity...I will think of
it.

After the switch to the new x.org sources, xbase-clients wasn't

manually I get the following message:

 --

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
 that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xbase-clients: Depends: libglu1-xorg but it is not going to be installed
 or libglu1c2

Without xclients there is no startx, so I can't get X up.

This is an issue that will be fixed in the next release. Until that,
stay

Ok, finally I found the problem.
In fact, the xkb rules I used before (called logicdo), doesn't exist anymore,
so it was normal that I hadn't multimedia key anymore (it used a basic pc105

I found that xkb rules called logicink do what logicdo did before. Now I use

This bug can be closed, but I think it could be usefull to be noticed about
xkb rules files that go away.

Bug#318851: xbase-clients : uninstallable due to dependency to libglu1 and not libglu1c2

2005-07-18 Thread Erwan David
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

xbase-clients still depends on libglu1, the old C++ ABI library, no
longer available.

This makes it uninstallable, but it still has the basic clients and utilities
(like xauth or startx).

A workaround would to be to remove from xbase-clients the 3D enabled
clients, keeping the basic ones, or to recompile the 3D enabled with
the new libglu1c2.

Re: Bug#318634: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg forget all the previous value

2005-07-18 Thread David Martínez Moreno
El Sábado, 16 de Julio de 2005 19:22, Sylvain LE GALL escribió:
 Package: xserver-xorg

 Hello,

First of all, i would like to thank you for the great work done from
 XFree86 to X.org.

When i try to reconfigure X.org i use the standard dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg command line. All the values are taken into account and
written in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (and a backup file is created). BUT if i
do it again, all the values i have set are forgotten... That is a little
bit annoying -- especially when you are trying new configurations ;-)

The value reported by debconf-show xserver-xorg are the good ones (see
below), but it seems that they are overwritten at the beginning of the
 xserver-xorg.config... (i don't know where).

Hello, Sylvain. Could you please patch your current
/var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xorg.config with the attached patch and
run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg again? It should finally preserve old
values.

I fixed it while doing other X debugging and find it extremely annoying
(and
not the old behaviour). I do not see the point of resetting the values if the
string $XORG_FORCE_PROBE is empty, so I simply removed it.

Best regards,

Ender.

Package: xserver-xorg
Severity: normal
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-1

libvgahw.a in X.org's xserver 6.8.2 is miscompiled by gcc-4. This is a
known bug to X.org [1][2][3], gcc [4] and even Red Hat [5], who've
posted a libvgahw.a [6] that fixed it, at least in my case. I found that
the libvgahw.a from xserver-xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-0pre1v1 also worked fine.
(No longer avaiable on people.debian.org, but I had it installed on
another machine.)

I understand this is also already known to the Debian X Maintatiner, but
I couldn't find a bug against either xorg or gcc-4.0 packgages in the
BTS, nor any mention in the debian-x email archives.

As such, I guess this is more of a visibility bug, so I (and presumably
anyone who subscribes to it) can see when the problem's solved and no
longer have to manually intervene in xorg-xserver upgrades.

Hi,

Bug#233551 added support for SELinux, but turned it off by
default. (Thanks for incrporating the patch, BTW). However, for Etch,
I think the time has come to compile in the SELinux support by
default; dpkg and ssh already support it, and logrotate/coreutils
 shall follow suit soon.

I think all that needs be done is that the default for
 HasSELinux in XFree86ServerOSDefines be reversed.

thanks,

manoj

since this package was presumably compiled with gcc v4 (libglu1-xorg
provides libglu1c2) it should depend instead on libstdc++6-4.0-dev.

Hi,
I just moved from XFree86 to the new Xorg server package.
Hardware is

:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G200
AGP (rev 03)

driver is mga.

Basically, it works well, but when changing to text-console
(Ctrl-Alt-F1) the screen is full of garbage.

Re: Bug#318692: xlibs-dev: compat package doesn't depend on libs formerly in xlibs-static-dev

The current version of xlibs-dev is not fully backwards-compatible with
previous versions built from xfree86, because in the xorg tree a number of
packages have been split out of the xlibs-static-dev package, e.g.,
libxxf86vm-dev. Packages that previously had a build-dependency on
xlibs-dev only now FTBFS; if the intention is to break backwards
compatibility, I think it would be better to drop the xlibs-dev package
altogether, otherwise these libs should be re-added to the dependencies of
 xlibs-dev.

Hello, Steve. I think that it was Branden's desire to drop completely
xlibs-dev after sarge and choose whatever dependency you need from the
libx*-dev miriad. So the second option will be, in my humble opinion, the
path to follow. I do not speak on XSF's behalf, though.

Best regards,

Ender.

The console screen gets completely garbled when starting X.org.
Going back to the console C-A-{F1-F6} or exiting X gives the same
result. X works fine, also with C-A-Fx to C-A-F7. The font seems to be
black with a black background. The mouse prompter and the cursor is
white and visible. The console has a blue frame all around the screen.
stty sane does not work.

I have upgraded from 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14. The old configuration file ir

it says to include all of /var/log/XFree86.0.log , but I can't very well

[EMAIL PROTECTED] right after this, with the bug report number

Hello, Greg. Please do not make that.

There is a nice tool called reportbug to make good bug reports. You
have not
stated which version on XFree86 o X.Org you are using.

The footer from your report says that you are in unstable. There are no
XFree86 packages in unstable, only X.Org's ones. Either report against the
XFree86 version in stable (i.e. sarge), or upgrade to the latest packages in
sid, that in 6 hours will be 6.8.2.dfsg.1-3 (right now are 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2).

Best regards,

Ender.

xbase-clients still depends on libglu1, the old C++ ABI library, no
 longer available.

There is a new version of X.Org packages in the archive, that will
appear in
it in about 6 hours and that fix your problem.

Reopen if it is not the case.

xbase-clients still depends on libglu1, the old C++ ABI library, no
longer available.

This makes it uninstallable, but it still has the basic clients and utilities
(like xauth or startx).

A workaround would to be to remove from xbase-clients the 3D enabled
clients, keeping the basic ones, or to recompile the 3D enabled with
the new libglu1c2.

Using evdev the option Emulate3Buttons off does not work

the default is on, and it can't be switched off :-(.

This is my InputDevice for the mouse:

Hello, Harri. There is an addition to the latest installed xorg
packages in
sid (in about 6 hours there will be a 6.8.2.dfsg.1-3 version in the archive)
that allows you to *really* choose between 3-button emulation or not. In the
meanwhile you can test the workaround in bug number 318092.

Reopen if it is not the case.

Hello, Reinhard. Could you please replace

may need to restart the whole system to achieve full recovery.

Please send to the bug address the result of this test.

Hello, Bill. I am happy to hear that. In today's release,
6.8.2.dfsg.1-3 (it
will arrive to the archive in 4 hours or so), a fix is included for this bug,
so relax and let dpkg's magic to take place. :-)

overstriking. The attached patch fixes it.

thanks (now I'll have to look/see when it was broken...)

Please, tell us if we could add the patch from Eugene to #203 patchset,
 i.e.,
if you found the patch valid, and fix the bold fonts issue with the next
 release.

It looks valid, and I checked it into my development tree as part of changes
toward #204.

About the libvgahw.a and volatile issue.

2005-07-18 Thread David Martínez Moreno
Hello, it seems that finally consensus have arrived to GCC about the
'volatile' thing:

http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2005-07/msg00746.html

[...]
As for putting RTH's change in 4.0.2, I'm comfortable with that, provided the
usual testing is done, as I think this is at least a QoI regression.
[...]

Best regards,

Ender.

Could you please elaborate more on that?

Are you saying that you finally got working Japanese fonts in your

Bad behaviour in xterm after resizing.

2005-07-18 Thread David Martínez Moreno
Hello, Thomas. I was testing some bug reports and I experienced a very
strange thing, mostly cosmetic. I'm not an xterm user, so I have no
preferences, as far as I know.

To test: Launch xterm, and resize its width to less than the prompt
string.
Then xterm stacks the current text in the visible window. The stacking is not
right here, because every column I remove, another row appears with partial
content.

Then you enlarge xterm. A lot of partial lines have appeared. Where no
buffer
existed, now I can scroll up and down by my partial prompts.

I attach an image of the two things.

xterm version 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2 (I think that carries xterm patchset #200).

Best regards,

Ender.

Bug#318923: xterm: localization hell again (even with UTF8 locales)

2005-07-18 Thread Wladimir Mutel
Package: xterm
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2
Severity: important

How to reproduce :

1. Create/generate locales for en_US.UTF-8 and uk_UA.UTF-8
2. Add '*faceName: Terminus' into app-defaults/XTerm (Terminus has
enough Unicode characters for both Latin and Cyrillic).
3. Start xterm (or uxterm) with LANG=en_US.UTF-8
4. Inside it, run 'date' with LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
5. See 'nnn nnn' instead of weekday and month names.

Why, oh why English UTF8 locale/encoding excludes
Cyrillic UTF8 characters out of printability ?
(the same could be reproduced with 'fixed' or 'clean' fonts as well,
(-fa option) with only difference - there dotted squares are seen).

How this should be indeed :

3. Start xterm/uxterm with LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8 (or with any other UTF8
locale, as it worked before)
4. Run 'date' with LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
5. See proper cyrillic letters for month and weekday.
6. Run 'date' wirh LANG=en_US.UTF-8
7. See proper English date.

This behaviour started to occur after upgrading from XFree86 4.3.0 to
X.Org 6.8.2 . Don't know if it lays in xterm itself or in supporting
libs. Did not do any deep research. Just noticed that on one my system
where locale was en_US.UTF-8, Cyrillic letters stopped to be printed
after this upgrade. No similar effects were observed in gvim, neither
in Mozilla. Only 'beloved' xterm was so overly sensitive ...

Bug#318923: utf-8 option for xterm does not work anymore

2005-07-18 Thread Jan Willem Stumpel
Package: xterm
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2
Followup-For: Bug #318923

Apparently it is no longer possible to start xterm in UTF-8 mode by default by
setting

   xterm*VT100*utf8:

in /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm or in ~/.Xresources. Even if a UTF-8 capable
font is present, display of non-ASCII chars is mangled (e.g. a degree
sign, which is hex c2 b0 in UTF-8, is displayed as A-circumflex followed by
a degree sign). To get proper UTF-8 display back, you have to do
CTRL-RightClick, then select UTF-8 from the pop-up menu. But it should be
possible to set this as default by using xterm*VT100*utf8: .

As the OP said, this throws us back into localization hell (from which I
was so glad to have escaped by changing to UTF-8...)

Extra data point: I tried to preserve my own /etc/X11/app-defaults XTerm and
XTerm-color files during upgrade. There is now an
/etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color.dpkg-dist file, but no
/etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm.dpkg-dist. MAybe something went wrong during the
processing of /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm. But of course I don't know.

Bug#318948: xserver-xorg: radeon driver is missing X700 support

2005-07-18 Thread Harald Welte
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The debian X.org package doesn't include suport for the (now common in
new notebooks) X700 chipset, as the 6.8.2 upstream release is also
lacking support.

However, X.org CVS has a very trivial patch (basically just adding PCI
device id's), which I would love to see in debian unstable.

The patch can be found at

Bug#227578: xmodmap and Mode_switch, ISO_Level3_Shift

xmodmap is included in xbase-clients 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1

But none of the ?acute symbols does work. The 5th and 6th columns
instead is working as Xavier already stated before.
 - 3rd and 4th columns do not work.

If I enable section (1) then the ouput of i. e. Alt+i is i. This is
not what it was intended to print..

But: Using left Alt (Alt_L)+a (i. e.) I get aacute, but apparently not
from what I configured as Alt+i gives me eacute instead of the
configured iacute. Now, the question is, where does this damn aacute at
Alt+a and eacute at Alt+i (and others as well, i. e. at Alt+q I get
 ntilde)???
None of the included xkb-definitions in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/*
does define them at these positions (did I overlook something?).

If you want to use xmodmap, add
 Option XkbDisable true
in your X config file to disable XKB.

Re: Bad behaviour in xterm after resizing.

Hello, Thomas. I was testing some bug reports and I experienced a very
strange thing, mostly cosmetic. I'm not an xterm user, so I have no
preferences, as far as I know.

To test: Launch xterm, and resize its width to less than the prompt string.
Then xterm stacks the current text in the visible window. The stacking is
not right here, because every column I remove, another row appears with
 partial content.

xterm doesn't redraw the window as it resizes. Shrinking the window causes
xterm to reallocate memory. Growing the window, xterm reallocates memory
and fills the new cells with blanks.

Some applications redraw the window - screen for instance. I've seen
some comments that indicate bash may redraw its prompt in this case too.

Bug#318634: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg forget all the previous value

It should finally preserve old
 values.

It works better, but it is stillg forgetting the name of my monitor (ViewSonic
VP171b). I can see it in the debconf-show xserver-xorg.

Thank you
Sylvain Le Gall

What value are you using to set

on the Undescore key while using xlibs+xserver-xfree86.

The problem goes away upgrading to xserver-xorg or downgrading xlibs to
the 4.0.3 old package.

When I start the X.org by typing 'startx'.. the X is starting but
normaly (on xfree86) it was a b/w net. Now the screen is completly

 can make a photo.

Then, when I kill xserver by press Ctrl+alt+bckp or by 'kill pid'

Hello, Marek. Be careful with your mails...you sent the mail directly
to me
instead to the list.

Nice photo. ;-)

It seems the same problem that everybody is having. Could you please
replace /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a with the one available in
http://people.debian.org/~ender/ and restart X? You may need to restart the
whole system to achieve full recovery.

You can test version 6.8.2.dfsg.1-3 to see if problem vanishes.

Best regards,

Ender.

Bug#318923: xterm: localization hell again (even with UTF8 locales)

2005-07-18 Thread Thomas Dickey

 Package: xterm
 Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2
 Severity: important

 How to reproduce :

 1. Create/generate locales for en_US.UTF-8 and uk_UA.UTF-8
 2. Add '*faceName: Terminus' into app-defaults/XTerm (Terminus has
enough Unicode characters for both Latin and Cyrillic).
 3. Start xterm (or uxterm) with LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 4. Inside it, run 'date' with LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
 5. See 'nnn nnn' instead of weekday and month names.

Actually on my machine, I'm not seeing a change for the output of 'date'
(yes, I did regenerate locales):

/usr/build/xterm/xterm-203b (101) ./testit
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_MESSAGES to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
LANG=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_TIME=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_NAME=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_ADDRESS=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_TELEPHONE=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
LC_ALL=LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8
Mon Jul 18 17:28:28 EDT 2005
/usr/build/xterm/xterm-203b (102)

testit:
#!/bin/sh
with-locale LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8 locale
with-locale LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8 date

with-locale:
#!/bin/sh
unset LANG
unset LC_ALL
unset LC_CTYPE
export LANG=$1
export LC_ALL=$1
shift
$*

For the sake of discussion, a typescript file from your session, showing
the output of locale and the output of date would show enough information
to see if it is encoded in UTF-8, and allow me (by cat'ing to the terminal)
to see what xterm would display.

Hi XSF!

and much more of this. Please, could someone with a debug-enabled xterm look
into this?

This leads to a reproducible stacksmashing SEGV when running scp within
this xterm.

Well, in the meantime I've just gotten a report that we didn't fully fix
this in -3 like I thought. Could you post the patch you used to make the
lib that you're having everyone download and try out? I used one from the
redhat bug report, but it may be different that the one you're using,
because the bug reporter said that while -3 didn't work for him, replacing
the lib with yours did work.

Re: Bug#318425: nothing forces xserver-xfree86 - xserver-xorg

When starting with sarge, xserver-xfree86 stays on the computer and
  xserver-xorg isn;t installed if you don't have the x-window-system-core
  metapackage installed.

  Possible solutions:

  1.:
  - create a xserver-xfree86 transition package that depends on
xserver-xorg
  - version the xserver-xfree86 conflict in xserver-xorg
  - drop the xserver-xfree86 transition package after the release
of etch

  2.:
  - let xserver-common conflict with xserver-xfree86
  - drop the Provides: xserver-xfree86 from xserver-xorg
  - all other packages depending on xserver-xfree86 have to
adjust their dependencies

Both are possible solutions, but I'd personally slightly prefer
  the second one.

I am with you, the second one is cleaner, but I think that breaks more
 things
that the first one. When we will ask to the FTPmasters to remove remaining
XFree86 packages, several things will be uninstallable. However, given the
current state of sid, it would be unimportant to break even more things. ;-)

I would like to consult to the release team before making up our minds.
 Maybe
they have a preferred way to go.

As we discussed on IRC, I think the second option is reasonable.

And FWIW, yes, debian-release@lists.debian.org is the address to use for
contacting the release team.

Bug#315195: *xterm manpages

2005-07-18 Thread Nathanael Nerode
Fix xterm postinst script to setup proper manpage alternatives for
x-terminal-emulator, as *xterm.1.gz have changed to *xterm.1x.gz in
 xorg (Closes #315195).

Um. I think we want them to be xterm.1.gz, not xterm.1x.gz, and we should fix
*that*. Right?

Re: Procedure reminders on updating a lib package for a C++ ABI change

All of GLU's interfaces are C, not C++, so transitioning libGLU is
 ill-advised at best.

Hmm. I guess if libGLU *uses* C++ interfaces, but does not *export* any C++
interfaces, then it's effectively a program, not a library, for the purposes
of the ABI change; it needs to be recompiled, but nothing depending upon it
does. Is that what's going on here? Fun. That's a corner case none of us
thought of.

...but wait. If this is the case, isn't there a potential problem when a C++
program uses libGLU? Couldn't we end up with conflicting symbols from two
different versions of libstdc++, one linked into libGLU and the other linked
into the program which uses libGLU, and therefore possibly get unreliable or
incorrect linkage at runtime? Or is libstdc++ using versioned symbols (in
which case that can't happen)?

We now have all x manpages ending with [1-9]x.gz

Bug#318993: xserver-xorg: Debian needs to get Alan Hourihane's updated I810 driver

2005-07-18 Thread Keenan Pepper

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-3
Severity: important

The current I810 driver /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o is
quite unstable and crashes a lot, especially when playing video. Alan
Hourihane's driver at http://www.fairlite.demon.co.uk/intel.html is much
better and the latest one has never crashed on my hardware. It suspect
it will probably fix a few other bugs reported by people with Intel chips.
