Re: Bug#318634: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg forget all the previous value
El Sábado, 16 de Julio de 2005 19:22, Sylvain LE GALL escribió: Package: xserver-xorg Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2 Severity: normal Hello, First of all, i would like to thank you for the great work done from XFree86 to X.org. When i try to reconfigure X.org i use the standard dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg command line. All the values are taken into account and written in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (and a backup file is created). BUT if i do it again, all the values i have set are forgotten... That is a little bit annoying -- especially when you are trying new configurations ;-) The value reported by debconf-show xserver-xorg are the good ones (see below), but it seems that they are overwritten at the beginning of the xserver-xorg.config... (i don't know where). Hello, Sylvain. Could you please patch your current /var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xorg.config with the attached patch and run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg again? It should finally preserve old values. I fixed it while doing other X debugging and find it extremely annoying (and not the old behaviour). I do not see the point of resetting the values if the string $XORG_FORCE_PROBE is empty, so I simply removed it. This is a known bug to X.org [1][2][3], gcc [4] and even Red Hat [5], who've posted a libvgahw.a [6] that fixed it, at least in my case. I found that the libvgahw.a from xserver-xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-0pre1v1 also worked fine. (No longer avaiable on people.debian.org, but I had it installed on another machine.) I understand this is also already known to the Debian X Maintatiner, but I couldn't find a bug against either xorg or gcc-4.0 packgages in the BTS, nor any mention in the debian-x email archives. As such, I guess this is more of a visibility bug, so I (and presumably anyone who subscribes to it) can see when the problem's solved and no longer have to manually intervene in xorg-xserver upgrades. Re: Bug#318692: xlibs-dev: compat package doesn't depend on libs formerly in xlibs-static-dev
El Domingo, 17 de Julio de 2005 05:23, Steve Langasek escribió: The current version of xlibs-dev is not fully backwards-compatible with previous versions built from xfree86, because in the xorg tree a number of packages have been split out of the xlibs-static-dev package, e.g., libxxf86vm-dev. Packages that previously had a build-dependency on xlibs-dev only now FTBFS; if the intention is to break backwards compatibility, I think it would be better to drop the xlibs-dev package altogether, otherwise these libs should be re-added to the dependencies of xlibs-dev. Hello, Steve. I think that it was Branden's desire to drop completely xlibs-dev after sarge and choose whatever dependency you need from the libx*-dev miriad. So the second option will be, in my humble opinion, the path to follow. I do not speak on XSF's behalf, though. Hello, it seems that finally consensus have arrived to GCC about the 'volatile' thing: http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2005-07/msg00746.html [...] As for putting RTH's change in 4.0.2, I'm comfortable with that, provided the usual testing is done, as I think this is at least a QoI regression. Bad behaviour in xterm after resizing.
Hello, Thomas. I was testing some bug reports and I experienced a very strange thing, mostly cosmetic. I'm not an xterm user, so I have no preferences, as far as I know. To test: Launch xterm, and resize its width to less than the prompt string. Then xterm stacks the current text in the visible window. The stacking is not right here, because every column I remove, another row appears with partial content. Then you enlarge xterm. A lot of partial lines have appeared. Where no buffer existed, now I can scroll up and down by my partial prompts. I attach an image of the two things. xterm version 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2 (I think that carries xterm patchset #200). Bug#318923: xterm: localization hell again (even with UTF8 locales)
Package: xterm Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2 Severity: important How to reproduce : 1. Create/generate locales for en_US.UTF-8 and uk_UA.UTF-8 2. Add '*faceName: Terminus' into app-defaults/XTerm (Terminus has enough Unicode characters for both Latin and Cyrillic). 3. Start xterm (or uxterm) with LANG=en_US.UTF-8 4. Inside it, run 'date' with LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8 5. See 'nnn nnn' instead of weekday and month names. Why, oh why English UTF8 locale/encoding excludes Cyrillic UTF8 characters out of printability ? (the same could be reproduced with 'fixed' or 'clean' fonts as well, (-fa option) with only difference - there dotted squares are seen). How this should be indeed : 3. Start xterm/uxterm with LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8 (or with any other UTF8 locale, as it worked before) 4. Run 'date' with LANG=uk_UA.UTF-8 5. See proper cyrillic letters for month and weekday. 6. Run 'date' wirh LANG=en_US.UTF-8 7. See proper English date. This behaviour started to occur after upgrading from XFree86 4.3.0 to X.Org 6.8.2 . Don't know if it lays in xterm itself or in supporting libs. Did not do any deep research. Just noticed that on one my system where locale was en_US.UTF-8, Cyrillic letters stopped to be printed after this upgrade. No similar effects were observed in gvim, neither in Mozilla. Bug#318923: utf-8 option for xterm does not work anymore
Package: xterm Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-2 Followup-For: Bug #318923 Apparently it is no longer possible to start xterm in UTF-8 mode by default by setting xterm*VT100*utf8: in /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm or in ~/.Xresources. Even if a UTF-8 capable font is present, display of non-ASCII chars is mangled (e.g. a degree sign, which is hex c2 b0 in UTF-8, is displayed as A-circumflex followed by a degree sign). To get proper UTF-8 display back, you have to do CTRL-RightClick, then select UTF-8 from the pop-up menu. But it should be possible to set this as default by using xterm*VT100*utf8: . As the OP said, this throws us back into localization hell (from which I was so glad to have escaped by changing to UTF-8...) Extra data point: I tried to preserve my own /etc/X11/app-defaults XTerm and XTerm-color files during upgrade. There is now an /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color.dpkg-dist file, but no /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm.dpkg-dist. MAybe something went wrong during the processing of /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm. I am with you, the second one is cleaner, but I think that breaks more things that the first one. When we will ask to the FTPmasters to remove remaining XFree86 packages, several things will be uninstallable. However, given the current state of sid, it would be unimportant to break even more things. ;-) I would like to consult to the release team before making up our minds. Maybe they have a preferred way to go. As we discussed on IRC, I think the second option is reasonable. And FWIW, yes, debian-release@lists.debian.org is the address to use for contacting the release team. Cheers, -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#315195: *xterm manpages
Fix xterm postinst script to setup proper manpage alternatives for x-terminal-emulator, as *xterm.1.gz have changed to *xterm.1x.gz in xorg (Closes #315195). Um. I think we want them to be xterm.1.gz, not xterm.1x.gz, and we should fix *that*. Right? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Procedure reminders on updating a lib package for a C++ ABI change
Marcello Magellon wrote: Keyword: implemented. All of GLU's interfaces are C, not C++, so transitioning libGLU is ill-advised at best. Hmm. I guess if libGLU *uses* C++ interfaces, but does not *export* any C++ interfaces, then it's effectively a program, not a library, for the purposes of the ABI change; it needs to be recompiled, but nothing depending upon it does. Is that what's going on here? Fun. That's a corner case none of us thought of. ...but wait. If this is the case, isn't there a potential problem when a C++ program uses libGLU? Couldn't we end up with conflicting symbols from two different versions of libstdc++, one linked into libGLU and the other linked into the program which uses libGLU, and therefore possibly get unreliable or incorrect linkage at runtime? Or is libstdc++ using versioned symbols (in which case that can't happen)? --Nathanael -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
