Debug XFree86 vs X.org font rendering

I have a dual install of sarge and etch on the one machine.  When running
sarge (with XFree86) I find the font rendering more to my taste than with
etch.  The etch configuration is a copy of my sarge installed
dist-upgraded and I can see no obvious changes in /etc/fonts between the
two installs.

It seems that in X.org my attempts to set medium autohint do not work
correctly and I can uneven font spacing in X.org.

Can anyone give me a clue as to how I can debug these two setups and try
to align them?

I'm using evdev driver from cvs and I have following hardware¹ and
configuration². All buttons works and I don't need to run xmodmap to
alter button orders.

Udev rules are one way to find correct Device, but driver won't work
with symlinks etc... I think it's better to wait for 7.1 and users space
input hotplug support for evdev. But of course you can use Name/Phys
options to specify right device to use.

And btw I think, you need to disable cruise control in order to use last
tree buttons via evdev. Use
http://freshmeat.net/projects/logitech_applet/ or
http://www.bedroomlan.org/~alexios/coding_lmctl.html to disable it.
Anyone willing to ITP those?

I was recently browsing the web on a windows box and realized that
over the last 4 years, I had forgotten how nice it is to be able
browse back/forward with a single button click.  So I set about
enabling this functionality on my Debian box.  I found this gentoo doc
(http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Mouse_Nav_Buttons) very helpful.

the only extra config needed in X is to change the "Protocol" to 
"ExplorerPS/2" and use "Buttons" "7" as options under the "InputDevice" 
section.  beyond that just a couple items need to be added to the  X 
startup scripts (~/.xinitrc).

where imwheel is installed via the imwheel package and the config file

This is specific for my mouse (logitech mx510), and may differ for other
hardware.  There is work to make the nav buttons consistent accross hardware

I think this capability is important because I remember when I first
switched that I was disappointed that the nav buttons didn't work.  I
stuck with it, but it could be enough to turn away a significant
number of new users who are stuck in the windows mud.  One of the
gnome HIG is along the lines of provide an interface that the user
expects and don't suprise them.  I look forward to any thoughts on
this matter.

I have a Sceptre X20G-Naga II connected to my matrox adaptor.  If I bring it
up attached to the DVI port (DVI->DVI), console works (VGA is handled
differently by the card, I assume), but I get a black screen from X.

Connecting the monitor up VGA->VGA works as expected.

Bug#347786: gpm repeating broken since X.org 6.9

I'm just wondering what's happening with this issue. 

Appearances suggest that it could be a PPC-specific problem in X.org 6.9
(since it appeared when X.org 6.9 entered Testing), but not knowing much
about the internals of gpm or X.org, I'm at loss as to what causes it.

You're right. That was a goof from reading my Xorg logfile. Thanks for the

I upgraded 5m ago to the latest 1:7.0.3, but the bug is still present,
due to the symlink /usr/share/X11/rgb (without the .txt extension).
In fact, the following solves the problem:

  $ mv /usr/share/X11/rgb /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt

BTW, to be sure it's not a problem of my xorg.conf, I commented out
the RgbPath in it.

You're trying to solve the problem at the wrong layer.  The answer here
is to implement hotplug input devices.  This is being worked on.
