Bug#361315: xterm: Problem with German Umlauts
Package: xterm Version: 210-2 Severity: normal Hi, I observed two strange effects with German Umlauts: 1. I can type in Umlauts and they are printed nicely, but if I press backspace to remove the Umlaut I have to press it twice to remove it completely. Imagine that I tested typing three Umlauts in the beginning of the shell prompt and want to delete these I have to press six times backspace and the cursor moves right into the prompt. 2. It is the first time at all that I'm able to verify bug #316953 which has the advantage that I can investigate into this problem, but this does not really reduce my frustration. There is no difference between xterm and uxterm (= xterm -u8). When I use gnome-terminal everything is fine. I did not change my environment variable setting compared to an older version of xterm when it worked fine. I have also another box that does not show this strange effect. I'm willing to provide any further information that might be necessary to track down the problem, but I have no idea what might be helpful. Bug#355811: same problem
I have what I think is the same problem. The system in question is a single-core amd64 system based on the Via K8T800 chipset and an AMD FX-51 CPU. The video card, according to lspci, is an: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200] (rev 01) When the system starts, I end up with a blank screen and no response to anything I try on the keyboard. I can log in over ssh, however. The X server seems to be hung (killing it fails to help, need to reboot with gdm disabled to get a text console login prompt). I discovered that if I remove the radeon.ko driver from the kernel modules tree and reboot, all is well (other than the obvious lack of DRI support). I don't recall exactly when I first saw the problem, but it was with a 2.6.14 or later prebuilt k8 kernel and my first use of the X.org server on this machine. The problem reappeared after an update today, and the same workaround got me running again. The versions of things I'm currently using include: linux-image-2.6.16-1-amd64-k8 2.6.16-5 xserver-xorg6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 If there is any other information I can provide that would be useful, feel free to ask. This hardware configuration used to work fine with the XFree86 server, I'd be pleased to help get it working completely with X.org too! I would like to know what does this exactly mean: - That users are advised not to use them? - That we could drop support for them in other packages? - That they will be removed from the archive soon? It means 1), and should mean 3) as well. In general, it does *not* imply 2) -- we need to be assured of having a clean upgrade path from sarge to etch, and since sarge shipped with a 2.4 kernel by default, this means that etch packages should at least be functional enough on 2.4 to allow a full upgrade and subsequent reboot to a new kernel. (That includes not breaking the system if the upgrade is interrupted and the system is rebooted again to a 2.4 kernel before the upgrade completes. Since sarge carry 2.6.8 kernels we could add to the release note to first upgrade the kernel to 2.6.8 before the upgrade, but that assume the sarge 2.6 kernel will handle their hardware (which is probable if sarge 2.4.27 kernel does, but no certain). I would like to point to bug #353865: * #353865: [ati/radeon] Fails to start up with DRI enabled because driver is incompatible with 2.4 kernel DRM since 6.9 Package: xserver-xorg (xserver-xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-4); Severity: important; Reported by: Simon Woodward [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 44 days old. I got hit by this bug some day ago: if you happen to have a radeon card that has (free) DRI support and use 2.4.27 on sarge, the upgrade will cause xdm to display a black screen after reboot and no way to get a local console. Since this includes cards advertised at sarge time as the best cards with DFSG-free DRI drivers, this is problematic. Cheers, -- Bill.
