Bug#363229: marked as done (xserver-xorg: No way to set the XKB data directory)
Your message dated Sat, 22 Apr 2006 15:47:35 -0700 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#363229: fixed in xorg-server 1:1.0.2-6 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.0.12 Severity: normal Following the transition to xkb-data and xkeyboard-config, I was told to put my customized xkb files aside and make the server use them by setting the XKBPATH. However, setting the XKBPATH variable didn't work (seems like the variable was ignored; I tried setting it in a user's login shell as well as root's shell, then restarting X). Then I tried the other method referred to in xkb-data's README.Debian, that of passing a -xkbdir to the server. The server did not recognize this flag (and gave me a list of the flags it did recognize...). Thus, it seems my only option would be to customize the files at their new location. This seems like a weird regression, because the net is full of reports where these things worked for people. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15-1-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages xserver-xorg depends on: ii debconf 1.4.72 Debian configuration management sy ii x11-common1:7.0.12 X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc ii xbase-clients 1:7.0.0-4 miscellaneous X clients ii xkb-data 0.8-5 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xserver-xorg-core 1:1.0.2-4 X.Org X server -- core server ii xserver-xorg-input-al 1:7.0.12 the X.Org X server -- input driver ii xserver-xorg-input-ev 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- evdev input driv ii xserver-xorg-input-kb 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- keyboard input d ii xserver-xorg-input-mo 1:1.0.4-2 X.Org X server -- mouse input driv ii xserver-xorg-video-al 1:7.0.12 the X.Org X server -- output drive ii xserver-xorg-video-ap 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- APM display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ar 1:0.5.0.5-2X.Org X server -- ark display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-at 1:6.5.7.3-3X.Org X server -- ATI display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ch 1:1.0.1.3-3X.Org X server -- Chips display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-ci 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cirrus display d ii xserver-xorg-video-cy 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cyrix display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-du 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- dummy display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-fb 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- fbdev display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-gl 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- Glint display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-i1 1:1.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i128 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i7 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i740 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i8 1:1.5.1.0-2X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx ii xserver-xorg-video-im 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- IMSTT display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-mg 1:1.2.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- MGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Neomagic display ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:0.1.4.1-3X.Org X server -- Newport display ii xserver-xorg-video-ns 1:2.7.6.5-2X.Org X server -- NSC display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- NV display drive ii xserver-xorg-video-re 1:4.0.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- Rendition displa ii xserver-xorg-video-s3 1:1.8.6.5-2X.Org X server -- S3 ViRGE display ii xserver-xorg-video-sa 1:2.0.2.3-4X.Org X server -- Savage display d ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:1.3.1.5-3X.Org X server -- SiliconMotion di ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.8.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.7.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS USB display ii xserver-xorg-video-td 1:1.1.1.3-3X.Org X server -- tdfx display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-tg 1:1.0.0.5-3X.Org X server -- TGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-tr 1:1.0.1.2-2X.Org X server -- Trident display ii xserver-xorg-video-ts 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Tseng display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-ve 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- VESA display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-vg 1:4.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- VGA display driv ii

Bug#364363: xkb-data: custom keyboard layout no longer works
Package: xkb-data Version: 0.8-5 Severity: normal Hi, i've been using a custom keyboard layout on my ibook for more than a year. It's derived from the popular fr_new layout. Tonight, i've dist-upgrade my SID : - whatever the X log says, it's not loaded (**) Option "XkbRules" "xorg" (**) XKB: rules: "xorg" (**) Option "XkbModel" "macintosh" (**) XKB: model: "macintosh" (**) Option "XkbLayout" "fr_new" (**) XKB: layout: "fr_new" (**) Option "CustomKeycodes" "on" (**) Keyboard: CustomKeycode disabled with Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "keyboard" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "macintosh" Option "XkbLayout" "fr_new" EndSection - custom keys are no longer available (pipe, french guillement, brackets, square brackets) - i can't switch to consoles (ctrl-alt-F) anymore - for example, right-arrow is no longer usable it acts like a Home key. xev confirms it. So using my ibook is really hard to use. Filling this bugreport was really painfull. Do you have any sort of highly customized stuff on your system? Maybe an alternate kernel or customized packages? Also, is there any way you could get us a backtrace of this happening with debugging symbols? libx11 has a -dbg package for you to install, and that should be sufficient. It'd be nice to have a window on what's actualy going on, because this is incredibly bizarre. Finally, could you send us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log from when the server tries to start? - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#364335: xlibs: Full keyboard support requires a newer kernel
Package: xlibs Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 Severity: normal I was running XFree86 from sarge without problems using fvwm2 as window manager. After upgrading to X.Org (sorry, don't know when this started exactly) some keys on my ibook (ppc) did not have as expected. Most notabley, I could no longer switch from X to virtual consoles of Linux (I tried all combinations of Fn, Ctrl, Alt, Apple key together with F1). The effect was as if F1 had been pressed alone (so the result depended on the application receiving the keypress). I tried to figure out what the problem was, but failed (I did not change any config files. For a different reason I updated from kernel 2.6.10 (self built, running fine with both Sarge and current Testing) to 2.6.16.5 (also self-built). The config of the new kernel was as close to the old one as possible, but I had to enable adb manually (after make oldconfig) and input event, to get the keyboard recognized after boot. Now the very same X has the keys working fine, i.e., I can switch to the virtual console back and forth without problems. As I can boot back and forth with 2.6.10 (also 2.6.8, if you need) and 2.6.16.5) I can experiment if you need more info. Unfortunately testing with Sarge or Upgrades from Sarge is (no longer) possible on this machine, at least not ATM (I might re-install Debian later this year for a different reason, if necessary, I could do a first install of Sarge and upgrade, if that is required). I assigned this bug to xlibs, because the intro shown by reportbug for X.Org told me, that the cause most probably lies in this packet. Please reassing if this is the wrong packet, though. -- Package-specific info: Keyboard-related contents of X.Org X server log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log: (==) ServerLayout "Cloned" (**) |-->Screen "Builtin" (0) (**) | |-->Monitor "LCD monitor" (**) | |-->Device "9200 M9+ Internal" (**) |-->Input Device "Trackpad and Mice" (**) |-->Input Device "Laptop Keyboard" (**) Option "Protocol" "Standard" (**) Option "AutoRepeat" "250 30" (**) Option "XkbModel" "macintosh" (**) XKB: model: "macintosh" (**) Option "XkbLayout" "de2" (**) XKB: layout: "de2" (**) Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys" (**) XKB: variant: "nodeadkeys" (==) Keyboard: CustomKeycode disabled (WW) The directory "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype" does not exist. I propose to merge these bug-reports. The solution should be to make sure that the link points to the right place. Handling of installation reports with Xorg installation issues
On debian-boot we fairly regularly see installation reports that mention issues with the installation of X. In general the d-i team lacks both the time and the expertise to deal with these issues. In a lot of cases this is "solved" by saying X installation and configuration is outside the scope of d-i (which fundamentally is true) and to close the installation report with a suggestion to ask for help on debian-user and/or file a separate bug against X. Only in some cases, mostly if the issue is clear, the report is reassigned to X or discover. For users this is not always satisfactory. With the new modular Xorg 7.0 packages soon to hit testing and the major changes in that (mostly packaging, but also code), it is likely that we will see more installation issues involving X. I have spoken with David Nusinow (Debian Xorg release manager) about how best to deal with this, and here is our proposal. - For installations of Sarge and installations involving Xorg versions older than 7.0, we continue to refer users to d-user in most cases. - For Desktop installations of Etch that use Xorg 7.0, we will either reassign or clone (if there are other issues) the installation report to package *xserver-xorg-core*. - The X Strike Force (XSF) will try their best to follow up on these reports and take appropriate action. So, people processing installation reports are requested to carefully check which version of Xorg was used in the installation. In most cases this can be determined by looking at installation method, version of the installer used and installation date. NOTE Currently installation of the Desktop task in testing is broken (gdm cannot find the x server). I have noted this on the D-I "Today" wiki [1]. As Xorg is very much a moving target at the moment, I don't feel we need to solve this now. As soon as Xorg has migrated to testing and things have settled down, we should perform some installation tests to see what tuning is needed in Xorg dependencies, definition of tasks or whatever else is needed to get a good default Desktop installation again. This includes determining which packages need to be (pre-)installed for optimal auto-detection of hardware. Cheers, FJP pgpXzocrzxTzc.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#363925: xkb-data: XF86AudioRaiseVolume defined twice for Logitech keyboards
Hello I confirm this bug for logicink keyboard definition too. Also, there are other errors in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/inet For logicink, XF86AudioMedia is defined twice too (it should be "key "), and "key " should be XF86Go and not XF86Forward. Typo error too that prevents logiciink from being loaded. For logiciink keyboard definition there is : include "inet(logicinc)" but it should be : include "inet(logicink)" The problem is that there is some difference between these two kbd def. (cf XF86Go and XF86Forward). I don't open a bug report for each bug since I think there are other bugs, and I guess you don't want to threat plenty of such bugs. Regards. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#364288: Randomly loses input since X11R7 upgrade
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.0.14 Severity: important First off, apologies for the lack of detail in this bug report. I simply do not know what's going on nor how to debug it. :-/ After my latest dist-upgrade, which pulled in X.Org 7, the X server has started randomly losing input. When it ends up in this state, no input is accepted whatsoever, all keypresses and mouse button clicks does not appear to be processed at all (even the keyboard LEDs won't change if I hit e.g. Num Lock). The only thing that keeps working is the mouse pointer, which moves normally when I move the mouse. I believe every time the server has entered this state I've been using the mouse for something. It doesn't seem to happen unprovoked - I've never woken up to the server having entered the defunct state during night, for instance, while when actively using the computer it usually happens within a few hours. I don't use the mouse for much, though, so I suspect it might happen more frequently if I used it more. I've experienced the problem both using the "nv" and "nvidia" drivers, and also both when using the "evdev" and "mouse" drivers for my mouse device. There's nothing relevant in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, nor in ~/.xsession-errors. The X server itself is completely unuseable when it occurs, and I have found no way of reviving it. It doesn't seem to be another way out than to change to another VT (after having set the keyboard to raw mode using Alt+SysRq+R), and from there do a full restart of X. I have no idea how to debug this further, so any suggestions on how to get to the bottom of this would be much appreciated. Bug#364282: xkb-data: Layout "en_US" doesn't work anymore
Package: xkb-data Version: 0.8-5 Severity: important With this keyboard layout, pressing AltGR (or right Alt) allowed the user to input special characters (for example, AltGr+; = dead acute, AltGr+Shift+1 = inverted exclamation mark). Now it doesn't work anymore. To reproduce: $ setxkbmap -rules xorg -model pc104 -layout en_US and then press "AltGr+; a". A "LATIN SMALL LETTER A WITH ACUTE should be generated. Instead, something different happens. In most cases, a RIGHT-POINTING DOUBLE ANGLE QUOTATION MARK is generated, as if normal Alt was pressed (';'+128). Thanks. PS: Maybe this bug should go to xlibs. Bug#364253: xorg: Random crashes on SiS card when switching xsessions
Package: xorg Severity: normal Since a month or so, I experience regular crashes of my Debian testing machine. About one per week, if not more. The crash is related to the use of Xorg (so my report here), but usually break the whole system down. Sorry for the length of this message, but I wanted to give you as much information as I could. SOME GENERIC REMARKS - CRASH NEVER OCCURS WHEN THE MACHINE IS UNATTENDED (mine is up 24/24) or in remote text access (I do remote backups, have a CVS server on it, and such: never crashed during that kind of operations). That even if Xorg is running in whatever configuration. - IT USUALLY CRASH WHEN OR JUST AFTER I SWITCH X SESSION. I usually run 2 to 4 xsessions in parallel (CTRL-ALT-F7 to CTRL-ALT-F10) and switch between them using the usual key commands. SYMPTOMS BEFORE CRASHES === - Text consoles becomes unreadable. Either the screen is black, only cursor shown, or strange graphics in black/gray/white filling the screen. In both case, except of the display, the terminal seems to be functional. - Pixmap under X11 are sometimes filled with random data found in memory. Eg. the KDE bar is filled with what looks like to be some Firefox page displayed some time ago, or simply random "noise". - When switching session (by alt-ctrl-Fn) a temporary black screen appears (not unusual) but there is blue-green dotted cursor as wide as the screen that can be moved with the mouse. Sometimes the crash occurs on that screen. -> Those symptoms can last pretty long before a crash occurs. They doesnt show up when only one session is openned (and swtiching to text consoles). Usually opening a second session is enough to render the text consoles unusable. LOGS TRACES LEFT AFTER REBOOT = As the crash of the Xserver render the machine unusable (usually the kernel is crashed too), there are not much info I have left. But there are some logs that my be interesting. They are below: - From /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old Note: Last crash didnt left anything useful in this log file. So I pastle an older crash under the same conditions (but from 06/03/04, so likely with a previous Xorg version): Backtrace: 0: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x88) [0x80897b8] 1: [0xe420] 2: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(OtherClientGone+0x51) [0x80ccf61] 3: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(FreeClientResources+0x8c) [0x80d891c] 4: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(CloseDownClient+0x180) [0x80c8f90] 5: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(Dispatch+0x261) [0x80c9b61] 6: /usr/X11R6/bin/X(main+0x415) [0x80d6765] 7: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xd0) [0xb7e20eb0] 8: /usr/X11R6/bin/X [0x8070131] Fatal server error: Caught signal 11.
