Proposed debconf templates rewrite to follow the Developer's Reference 6.5

2006-05-09 Thread Christian Perrier
I already mentioned here and there that the xorg package debconf
templates do not follow the recommendations given in the developer's
reference, which are mostly aimed at achieving overall writing style
consistency in questions seen by users.

Attached to this mail is a rewrite of the two .templates files
currently used in xorg's SVN.

I included a diff file for both and both individual files. All
compressed for size reasonssorry if that make quoting a little
more complicated for some of you.

I've just subscribed to debian-x to follow the discussion in case
comments are made (and I hope there'll be some!).

As those of you who know me well can guess, I also propose to handle
the translation update round that will follow if these changes (or
even some of them) are applied...

Rationale, change by change (similar changes are explained only once):

Package: gnucash
Version: 1.8.12-8
Severity: normal

Since some upgrade or other - it was either the move to X 7.0, or a C library
update that messed with the locales, I'm not sure - gnucash spews error
messages (to console) on startup and then displays no text in any "chrome"
(menus, toolbars, ...), unless one sets LC_ALL=C in the environment. [Merely
unsetting all locale-related environment variables does *not* cure the
problem.] The accounts tree is displayed correctly, as are actual ledger
entries if one opens an account, and everything appears to work insofar as
I can tell by guessing which buttons are which.

On IRC, upstream claimed this had to be a C library bug, but I am filing this
against gnucash because even if it is, you're probably in a better position
to figure out *what* the C library is doing wrong. Feel free to reassign
the bug appropriately.

Attached please find a complete transcript of the error messages produced
in the default locale.

Bug#366556: gnucash fails to start

After hashing this out with Steve on irc, we figured out that a good method
would be to provide a symlink in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir pointing to
/usr/share/fonts/X11/encodings/encodings.dir. The encodings.dir would also
contain the only absolute paths so that the fonts will always be found if
either the symlink or actual file is looked at. I've patched
xfonts-encodings to do this, and I'll be uploading the fix shortly. Please
re-open this bug if this fails to fix the problem for some reason. Thanks!

The version of this package that exists in unstable pre-depends on
x11-common to set certain things up. The source package for x11-common is
not yet ready to migrate in to testing on any architecture, including
AMD64. We're actively working on making this possible though. Once this
package can migrate in, the libraries, including libxpm-dev, should follow.

Bug#366556: gnucash fails to start

Yes. It's not a perfect workaround, merely a solution to that one
problem, in one case. The bug is marked important (and its severity
can be increased, for all it matters to me), and my primary concern,
as the gnucash maintainer, is that it is not a gnucash bug; it's a
problem in the X packages.

I have no particular suggestions about how to handle the release
engineering of this; thinking about these problems invariably makes my
head hurt, and I'm grateful for those of my fellow developers who
excel in this skill which I, sadly, lack.

Bug#365403: Bug#366556: gnucash fails to start

A workaround with the side-effect that anyone with a FontPath of
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/foo will be unable to see those fonts in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/foo, though.

The packages implicated in this transition include xfonts-encodings,
xfonts-base, xfonts-tipa, libfontenc1, xserver-xorg, xnest, vnc4server, and
xvfb. The first three are packages that provide (or provided) font
encodings; the last five are packages which I know reference the encodings
via a hard-coded path. (There may be others; tightvncserver and vncserver
explicitly do *not* reference the encodings directory, AFAICT.)

The two options are: to force all of these packages to be kept in sync,
which can only be achieved by adding multiple versioned conflicts à la
x11-common; or to expose the encodings in both the old and new locations
during a complete stable release cycle as a transitional period. The latter
option *should* only require versioned dependencies, but if the transitional
support is provided by making /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/encodings a symlink, that
would require the same sort of versioned conflicts as x11-common (though on
a much smaller scale, since there are only two packages providing files in
this directory).

Hmm, does the encoding provided by xfonts-tipa even *work*? It looks like
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir belongs to the xfonts-base
package, so there's no way for xfonts-tipa to register a new encoding? If
*that's* true, then the easiest upgrade path may be:

- xfonts-base Depends: xfonts-encodings (so that packages which previously
depended on xfonts-base for the encodings are satisfied)
- xfonts-base ships a /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir that
uses absolute paths to point to all of the encoding data in
  /usr/share/fonts/X11/encodings (??)
- xfonts-tipa gets ignored because it doesn't actually work

Also, given that libfontenc1 references the encodings directly, is a
versioned dependency from libfontenc1 to xfonts-encodings appropriate? This
would parallel the dependency of xserver-common on xfonts-base in previous
versions, I think.

Thoughts, XSF? Will an encodings.dir containing absolute paths actually
work?

By default there is no difference between runlevels 2-5 in Debian, so
you do not have to change anything in /etc/inittab.

This bug is caused by missing dependency on x11-common from unstable,
and was already reported as #365134.

libxpm-dev in amd64 testing?

2006-05-09 Thread Hans Blom
Hello Debian X Developers,

Would it be possible to add the "libxpm-dev" package also to the
"testing" distribution for "amd64"? According to

http://packages.debian.org/testing/libdevel/libxpm-dev

this package is not yet available for AMD64, although it seems to be
already in the "unstable" distribution for that architecture. Or are
there problems related with it?

Kind regards,
Hans Blom

Bug#366615: xkb-data: Requires "XkbModel" to be "macintosh_vndr" rather than "macintosh" or won't accept plain english characters

2006-05-09 Thread Hans Ekbrand
Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.8-5
Severity: important
Tags: l10n

Here is an excerpt from my xorg.conf

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
# Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "macintosh_vndr"
Option "XkbLayout" "se"
Option "XkbOptions""altwin:meta_alt"
EndSection

With XkbModel set to "macintosh" instead of "macintosh_vndr"
xdm would not accept plain english characters (it would only
accept numbers and non-english characters, i.e. the special
swedish characters that I cannot type in this terminal).

No, it should work without change:
$ setxkbmap -model macintosh -layout se -print
  xkb_keymap {
  xkb_keycodes  { include "xfree86+aliases(qwerty)"   };
  xkb_types { include "complete"  };
  xkb_compat{ include "complete"  };
  xkb_symbols   { include "pc(pc105)+macintosh_vndr/se"   };
  xkb_geometry  { include "macintosh(macintosh)"  };
  };

Can you please file a seperate bug report against xkb-data, with your
keyboard settings from xorg.conf?

Obviously, I'd like things to work in 64-bit mode!

I have no idea how easy or difficult it would be to rebuild this package

I've just tried to upgrade xdm to 1:1.0.1-6, from a
not-very-old 6.9.something version (sorry, I don't think I can now find
out what the old version was). I have not upgraded any other X
packages.

When xdm tries to start, according to /var/log/xdm.log :
server /usr/bin/X cannot be executed

This comes from /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers, which has this path hardcoded.
My X server seems to be in /usr/X11R6/bin/X, provided by xserver-common
6.9.0.dfsg.1-4.

My guess is that the location of the X server has changed recently, and
that if I now upgraded my other X packages it would now work properly.
But I'm not going to test this.

One solution would be to make xdm depend on whatever package it is
that provides the X server, so that it will find it in the right place.
Otherwise some mechanism to find X wherever it is installed is needed.

No.

I don't understand what it means to "disable" the Option "AGPMode".

Yes. The X server doesn't crash at 16 bpp.

Bug#366500: xbase-clients: bad ROFF .so request in some man pages

the chip-id-override does of course fix the problem; it works fine with 0x3150

/kernel/drivers/char/drm/drm_pciids.h
(i have already reported the chip-id as mentioned in 'drm_pciids.h')
when having dri enabled in xorg.conf, resuming from kernel-interna
software-suspend does not work - it seems to be a xorg issue.

Package: xfs
Version: 1:1.0.1-4
Severity: important

xfs fails to start showing the following error message:

Setting up X font server socket directory /tmp/.font-unix...done.
Starting X font server: xfs/usr/bin/xfs error: CONFIG: unknown parameter
"cache-hi-mark"
/usr/bin/xfs error: CONFIG: unknown parameter "cache-low-mark"
/usr/bin/xfs error: CONFIG: unknown parameter "cache-balance"

The problem seem to be the following lines in /usr/lib/X11/fs/config:

cache-hi-mark = 2048
cache-low-mark = 1433
cache-balance = 70

Unfortunately, commenting them out does not seem to fix the problem,
because while the output of xfs is now

dustpuppy:~# /etc/init.d/xfs restart
Stopping X font server: xfs not running (removing stale /var/run/xfs.pid).
Setting up X font server socket directory /tmp/.font-unix...done.
Starting X font server: xfs.

the command

$ ps auxwww | grep xfs

returns nothing.

Alexander

By the way, 0x5460 (Radeon X300) works. But Xorg 6.9 and 7.0 (with
6.5.8.0) are not very happy. When I start a 3D program (like glxgears),
I get:

Unknown device ID 5460, please report. Assuming plain R300.
*WARN_ONCE*
File r300_state.c function r300Enable line 456
TODO - double side stencil !

No ctx->FragmentProgram._Current!!

File r300_render.c function r300_get_num_verts line 188
user error: Need more than 2 vertices to draw primitive QS !

I have reported the problem in #350847 against libgl1-mesa-dri a couple
months ago. But, I never got any answer (and the pkg-mesa-devel list is
moderated...).

Thanks.

Does either of the following options make a difference?

Option "SilkenMouse" "off"
Option "ColorTiling" "off"
Option "SWcursor"

If any of these doesn't seem to make any difference, please double-check
in the log file that it's really in effect.

Also, if you're using Option "AGPMode" or any other AGP/DRI related
options, does disabling them make a difference?

Finally, does running at depth 16 instead of 24 make a difference?

Just xorg.conf.

Bug#366516: boot process of fresh etch installation does not lead to graphic login: inconsistent paths /usr/bin vs /usr/bin/X11

2006-05-09 Thread Joachim . Wuttke
Package: xdm
Version: 1.0.1-6

Inconsistencies in downgrading from sid to etch lead me to completely
reinstalling Debian. So, this report is about Debian etch as of today.
I installed from the CD image
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_beta2/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso.
I deselected "desktop" and "standard" to prevent the gnome overhead from
being installed. After rebooting into the fresh system, I updated apt and
upgraded the installed packages via ftp. Then, I installed xserver-xorg,
xdm, my preferred window manager, a few other packages, and all their
friends-and-relations.

(1) At some stage, startx failed because some scripts expect xdm to reside
in /usr/bin/X11 whereas etch installed it in /usr/bin. A symbolic link
helped.

At this stage, if not earlier, I was able to start X11 from tty1 via startx.

(2) /etc/inittab comes with default runlevel=2. It seems that I have to
change this manually.

(3) After the n-th reboot, no progress: still a vt100 login to tty1
instead of the graphic X11 login screen. At last, I found an enlightening
message in xdm.log: "server /usr/bin/X cannot be executed" "server open
failed for :0, giving up" and so on. Another link towards /usr/bin/X11
helped.

xdm developers: _please_ prevent Debian from becoming gnome-only.

- Joachim

Version: 7.0.17

When I run X, I see a display that has a central section that looks
more-or-less normal, surrounded by a band of weirdness. If I tell
Xserver-xorg to use the vesa driver, all works more or less.

My laptop uses a Cirrus logic GD7548
With Xfree86 I used to use the svga driver.

The automatic upgrade from Xfree86 wrote a config file that attempted
to use the Cirrus driver.

Bug#366514: Automatic upgrade from Xfree86 needs to fix mouse

2006-05-09 Thread Peter Chubb

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 7.0.17

I tried to upgrade from Xserver-xfree86 to xserver-xorg. The
XF86Config-4 file had the mouse device as /dev/input/mice. The
rewritten xorg.conf file had /dev/mouse, which doesn't exist on my
system. It looks as though the info in XF86Config-4 is not consulted
for the upgrade.

Thank you, I finally had to write some doc for a course during the
weekend
and hadn't got time to upload it.

Bug#366500: xbase-clients: bad ROFF .so request in some man pages

2006-05-09 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 1:7.0.1-1
Severity: normal

A "man atobm" gives the error:

man: can't open /usr/share/man/man1x/bitmap.1x: No such file or directory

before the man page can be found.

dixsept:~> gunzip -c /usr/share/man/man1/atobm.1x.gz
.so man1x/bitmap.1x

but the man page is:

dixsept:~> locate bitmap.1x
/usr/share/man/man1/bitmap.1x.gz

Other man pages are affected, e.g. xtrap*.

The problem is still there in xterm 210-3.

dixsept:~> ls -l /usr/share/man/man1/x-terminal-emulator.1.gz
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root root 42 2004-11-19 19:12:18
/usr/share/man/man1/x-terminal-emulator.1.gz ->
/etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator.1.gz
dixsept:~> ls -l /etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator.*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 2006-01-17 16:48:55
/etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator.1x.gz -> /usr/share/man/man1/uxterm.1x.gz
