Bug#367158: xserver-xorg: small fonts for the 2nd Xsession

2006-05-14 Thread lexa
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6
Severity: important

Hello

We use two Xsession, one for me and one for my girlfriend on the same
computer. The first Xsession (first at the logging)
have a Xsession who work perfectly with a correct size of fonts. The second
Xsession have always small font (12px i think)
I have think that's come from the config of the Xsession but :
- if i start my session in first my font have normal size, my girlfriend log in
in 2nd (start a new Xsession) her font a tiny
- if it's my girlfriend who log in in first, her fonts have a normal size, i
login in 2nd it's my font who is tiny

Sorry for the bad english... im'french

Bug#367179: xserver-xorg: xorg consumes too much CPU

2006-05-14 Thread Daniel Hofstetter
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.18

Xorg consumes on my machine at least 40% of CPU even if there is no activity.
If I
work with several applications Xorg consumes more than 60% of CPU and slows
down these
applications.

Bug#367113: libxext6: missing symlink libXext.so on fresh install

This is not a bug in libxext6 but in whatever looks for libXext.so
instead of libXext.so.6. The .so symlink is only intended for build time
linking and thus in the libxext-dev package.

Bug#331435: xserver-xorg: Mouse pointer occasionally vanishes

2006-05-14 Thread Gregor Horvath
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

Is there any news to this bug? I also have the same issue
on my laptop HP nx6125 with Debian Sarge. After a few minutes of idle
the mousepointer disappears.
Although geyes does still works (eyes are moving when moving the mouse),
there is no mouse pointer visible and clicking has no effect. rmmod and
modprobe mousedev and psmouse does not help.

That indicates the cause isn't in the driver but in the X server or even
the client side. You can verify that by trying a different driver, e.g.
vesa.

I just didn't ship it in Ubuntu. Personally I think the X.Org one is

Bug#367220: xbase-clients: Incorrect references in the manpages generates file not found errors

2006-05-14 Thread Ricardo Bugalho
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 1:7.0.1-1
Severity: normal

man yields errors like:
mandb: can't open /usr/share/man/man1x/xtrap.1x: No such file or directory
mandb: warning: /usr/share/man/man1/xtrapchar.1x.gz: bad symlink or ROFF `.so'
request

It's specially annoying since it does that in the cron jobs too.

The problem seems to be that xtrapchar.1x.gz refers to xtrap.1x,
but what actually exists is xtrap.1x.gz and mandb isn't smart enough to find it.

(didn't upgraded a while) xdm does not start any more. If I invoke
/etc/init.d/xdm from commandline as root nothing happens (no output, no
logfiles (/var/log/xmd.log , Xorg.0.log) written).
I made an `apt-get remove --purge xdm apt-get install xdm` to be sure
configuration files are reinstalled, but the problem still existed.
I tracked down the problem to the line:
DAEMON=/usr/bin/X11/xdm
in /etc/init.d/xdm
/usr/bin/X11/xdm does not exist in my debian installation. Instead of
/usr/bin/X11/xdm I found that xdm is installed at /usr/bin/xdm
so I changed the above mentioned line in /etc/init.d/xdm to
DAEMON=/usr/bin/xdm
With that change /etc/init.d/xdm produced following output:
---
$ /etc/init.d/xdm start
Starting X display manager: xdm
---
But X does not start anyway. But I get a log entry in /var/log/xdm.log saying:
---
Sun May 14 12:08:07 2006 xdm info (pid 5676): starting
Sun May 14 12:08:07 2006 xdm info (pid 5676): starting X server on :0
Sun May 14 12:08:07 2006 xdm error (pid 5678): server /usr/bin/X cannot be
executed
---
/usr/bin/X cannot be executed because /usr/bin/X does not exist in my
installation. It shoud say /usr/X11R6/bin/X but I didn't found out, where to
change that. I stopped my research at that point.

startx does work and the xorg Xserver starts normally.

Bug#367260: xorg-server: server fails to start at 2048x1536 but starts at 1920x1440 (then crashes)

2006-05-14 Thread Jeff Abrahamson
Package: xorg-server
Severity: normal

If I request 2048x1536 resolution in xorg.conf, X fails on startup
with a backtrace that is not output to Xorg.log for reporting here.

If I request 1920x1440, X runs, but leaves the display in an unusable
state (a version of a blank screen) when X exits. The machine is
still usable via ssh, but I can't get the display to work again
without rebooting.

This might be related to bug #365654.

Bug#363248: dexconf ignores mouse settings from debconf

2006-05-14 Thread EspeonEefi
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.18
Followup-For: Bug #363248

I was encountering this same problem, so I dug into /usr/bin/dexconf a
bit. I found this really strange section (starting from line 271):

### MOUSE / INPUTDEVICE

DO_EMULATE3BUTTONS=

fetch xserver-$SERVER/config/inputdevice/mouse/port
MOUSE_PORT=$RET
fetch xserver-$SERVER/config/inputdevice/mouse/protocol
MOUSE_PROTOCOL=$RET
fetch xserver-$SERVER/config/inputdevice/mouse/emulate3buttons
if [ $RET = true ]; then
  DO_EMULATE3BUTTONS=true
fi

exec 4$DEXCONFTMPDIR/InputDeviceMouse
cat 4 SECTION
Section InputDevice
Identifier Configured Mouse
Driver mouse
Option CorePointer
Option Device/dev/input/mice
Option Protocol ExplorerPS/2
SECTION
if [ -n $DO_EMULATE3BUTTONS ]; then
  printf \tOption\t\t\Emulate3Buttons\\t\true\\n 4
fi
printf EndSection\n 4

It seems as if dexconf is simply ignoring the values for Option Device
and Option Protocol that it's pulling from debconf. Is this actually
an intentional behavior?

Any news about this bug?

As the current error doesn't solve any problem, why not let
/usr/X11R6/bin there until a better solution (if any) is found?

With gucharmap one can see many characters from one font shown together.
I want to see one same character but from many fonts, shown together.
E.g., I want to see how all the relevant fonts on my system show U+8392,
and all shown on the same window together. What is the tool to do that?

Bug#367313: xfonts-scalable: ships xfonts-utils-autogenerated fonts.* files

2006-05-14 Thread Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe
Package: xfonts-scalable
Version: 1:1.0.0-4

Hello,

since 1:1.0.0-3 xfonts-scalable ships fonts.{cache-1,dir,scale} files
which are usually autogenerated via xfonts-utils in the fonts-packages
postinst scripts.
Of course, this does also happen for xfonts-scalable and, in turn,
leads to failing debsums checks:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/holbe% debsums -s xfonts-scalable
debsums: checksum mismatch xfonts-scalable file
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.cache-1
debsums: checksum mismatch xfonts-scalable file
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.dir
debsums: checksum mismatch xfonts-scalable file
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.scale

6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 (the latest 6.9 package) didn't do this, so I think this
is not intentional but some mistake happened while 1.0 transition.

Btw. xfonts-100dpi-transcoded, xfonts-75dpi-transcoded, xfonts-cyrillic
and xfonts-jmk do also ship fonts.scale files. However, they don't seem
to be automatically overwritten.

Thanks for your work best regards
   Mario

I just didn't ship it in Ubuntu. Personally I think the X.Org one is
infinitely more valuable, and that the one from manpages-dev shouldn't
be shipped, as it's not exactly the most useful thing to have around on
 your system.

The trick with the DRIVER_whatever variables was nice for avoiding the

Bug#367079: same crap with mouse

2006-05-14 Thread David Martínez Moreno

I changed mouse driver from evdev to mouse and similar things do
happen there. Buttons send wrong events, no button 4 and 5 events.

And I cannot map them with xmodmap. Either it complaints about not
specifying enough buttons - it claims to see 14 buttons (or 32! with
evdev where there are only 10), or it accepts when I specify dummy
numbers, but nothing changes in the mouse behaviour.

I know that it could be to blind-shoot, but could you please test
xserver-xorg-input-mouse 1.0.4-3? It carries a patch revamping the whole
wheel method.

Well, yes, there is one remaining file added manually by me, however the
postinst should not rely on that and fail otherwise.

We've found a good solution for this bug. It's closed unless you can find a
way and submit a patch that reliably fixes the issues mentioned by Steve in
this bug report. I invite you to do so, but in the meantime, the current
solution, though awkward and a little annoying, will ensure that we don't

Re: mesa: FTBFS on hurd-i386 because of dri/drm

2006-05-14 Thread Marcelo E. Magallon
On Thu, May 04, 2006 at 06:14:13PM +0200, Michael Banck wrote:

the attached patch fixes this problem in the most elegant way I could
come up with given the make-me-harder attitude of mesa's
debian/rules. If somebody has a better suggestion, I'd be happy to
  know :)

Whatever. If don't understand why debian/rules is the way it is, keep
your comments to yourself. If you can come up with a better solution
to the problem of packaging Mesa, by all means post a patch.

As the current version has reached testing some time ago, and a
missing mesa seems to be breaking a lot, I plan to NMU this in a
couple of days if there are no objections.

The proposed patch is not acceptable on grounds of not scaling well.

 This in particular:

  +ifeq (hurd-i386,$(DEB_HOST_ARCH))
  +select_target_any = $(shell dh_listpackages -s | grep -v '^$$' | while read
  p ; do cut -d ' ' -f 1,3 debian/libdir.map | grep -w $$p ; done | grep -v _
  | grep -v dri | cut -d ' ' -f 1 | sort -u | grep ^$(1)- | cut -d - -f 2-)
  +else
   select_target_any = $(shell dh_listpackages -s | grep -v '^$$' | while read
  p ; do cut -d ' ' -f 1,3 debian/libdir.map | grep -w $$p ; done | grep -v _
  | cut -d ' ' -f 1 | sort -u | grep ^$(1)- | cut -d - -f 2-)
  +endif

If you inspect debian/rules you'll see there not a single explicit
mention of architectures in there. I'd like it to stay that way. In
the past debian/rules was a mess of architecture special casing and I
don't want to go back to that.

If you can provide a comprehensive list of architectures where
libgl1-mesa-dri SHOULD be built, I'll accept that. If you are so
inclined, moan about the lack of exclusion lists for the Architecture
 field with the dpkg developers.

Is DRM linux specific or does it exist on FreeBSD, too?

 Marcelo

I'm using etch and had no problems with xdm before but since the last upgrade
(didn't upgraded a while) xdm does not start any more. If I invoke
/etc/init.d/xdm from commandline as root nothing happens (no output, no
 logfiles (/var/log/xmd.log , Xorg.0.log) written).

Merging with the other bugs already reported against this issue.

xprint-utils must be installed to build xbase-clients 7.0.1. Otherwise
the build fails with the following error:

No package 'xprintutil' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XDBEDIZZY_CFLAGS
and XDBEDIZZY_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Since upgrading to Xorg 7 some programs fail to start. Some other programs
 start, but errors are
 written to the console.
 gv (crashes):
 Warning: Cannot convert string
 -*-Helvetica-Medium-R-Normal--*-140-*-*-P-*-ISO8859-1 to type FontStruct

Can you try the package at
http://people.debian.org/~dnusinow/xfonts-encodings_1.0.0-4_all.deb and let
me know if that fixes your problem? You may have to restart the X server
for it to work. Thanks!

Bug#366994: xfonts-encodings: Absolute_path patch makes it out of work

 Hi David,

Recently, several bug reports have been composed for the problem of
incorrect encodings file locating function, including 362722, 366097
and 366098. The bug that X11 encoding cannot find encodings file is,
originally, due to the incorrect encoding-path in rules file of
package libfontenc1. Fortunately, the wrong encoding path has been
fixed in the latest version of package libfontenc1, say, 1.0.1-6.

But the upgrade of package xfonts-encodings results in a simliar bug
again. It seems that the absolute_path patch may not work, since it
makes X11 applications cannot find a proper encodings file even when
 libfontenc1 does provide a right encoding-path.

I have to downgrade xfonts-encodings from 1.0.0-3 to 1.0.0-2 to solve
 this problem.

Could you please try the xfonts-encodings package at
http://people.debian.org/~dnusinow/xfonts-encodings_1.0.0-4_all.deb and let
me know if it's still broken? Thanks!
