Bug#370074: xserver-xorg: Changed ModulePath breaks 3rd-party installers, e.g. NVIDIA video driver

2006-06-03 Thread Alistair Turnbull
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.20
Severity: important

Those of us with an NVidia GeForce 6100 (motherboard graphics) have to
use a binary-only driver supplied by nVidia. The installer puts modules
in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules, and until this morning that worked fine.
However, my latest apt-get dist-upgrade left me without an X server,
because the default module path has changed to /usr/lib/xorg/modules.

I can see the attraction of the new convention, but there is no need to
break compatibility with 3rd-party software. I eventually found that
adding the following lines to the Files section of my
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file fixed the problem:

# Path on which the NVIDIA drivers install themselves.
ModulePath /usr/X11R6/lib/modules
# Debian default module path.
ModulePath /usr/lib/xorg/modules

The order is important: the NVidia-supplied libglx module must be used
in place of the one which comes with the X server.

Obviously the ideal solution would be for NVidia (and others?) to
release their driver under a licence that allows it to be packaged by
Debian, but pragmatically that's not going to happen, so I suggest a fix
along the above lines might be a good idea.

Bug#370088: x11-common: Please conflict with ghostview

2006-06-03 Thread Roger Leigh
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.0.20
Severity: normal

ghostview isn't available in sarge or later releases, but is available
in woody. This package installs into /usr/X11R6/bin and so if present
will break the x11-common upgrade.

Please conflict with ghostscript to avoid this problem.

BTW, there may be other packages in woody causing similar problems.

Bug#369900: xserver-xorg: reduce visual artifacts during X server startup and shutdown

On Fri, 2006-06-02 at 17:38 -0400, Michael Gilbert wrote:

Yes, although with the version of X you're using, most of them (though
not the one you're using) are included in xserver-xorg. Also beware that
with generic drivers like vesa or fbdev, this may even be beyond the
driver's control.

Bug#370093: Installation aborts due to versioned conlicts being too loose on AMD64

2006-06-03 Thread Max Bowsher
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.0.20
Severity: important

x11-common contains versioned conflicts with many old xorg-x11 packages
using the version specifier '= 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6'.

However, there was an AMD64 binNMU into testing via
testing-proposed-updates, of version 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6+b1, which fails to
match the above specifier. This is especially critical in the case of
xbase-clients and xutils, since the lack of conflict means that these
packages remain installed, leaving files in /usr/X11R6/bin, causing
x11-common to abort the installation.

Please update the conflicts appropriately.

I've set severity important, since it would help all upgraders if fixed
packages were to hit testing quickly.

Thanks,
Max.

Hi.

I upgraded to new version when it'd reached testing and was unable to
fix one problem by changing my configuration, so I considered it as a
bug :).

Steps to reproduce:

I start 2 xservers, eg. one on vt7 and the other on vt8 (no matter
if both belongs to the same user). Then I can switch to both of the
servers from text console and vice versa. Now I want to switch from one
server to the other. But that makes lower part of the screen black. When
I go with my mouse cursor in that part, ugly vertical bar is displayed
and the mouse appears on upper margin of my screen.

Switching to text console and back to xserver fixes that.

Bug#369900: xserver-xorg: reduce visual artifacts during X server startup and shutdown

2006-06-03 Thread Michael Gilbert

my card) individually and report my findings to the bts.

Yes, although with the version of X you're using, most of them (though
not the one you're using) are included in xserver-xorg. Also beware that
with generic drivers like vesa or fbdev, this may even be beyond the
driver's control.

Bug#370128: Direct Rendering

2006-06-03 Thread smsms
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.5.8.0-1

Hi,

I run etch and just pulled in the new Xorg via dselect. The result is that my
direct rendering does not work any more. The Xorg log says:

(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering enabled

But glxinfo says:

direct rendering: No

I use the Ati Radeon 9200 which gets detected correctly by Xorg. After I
discovered that I could no longer play my shooters I tried some xorg options
related to dri, but they didn't work either.

Thx,

Malte

Bug#370141: X crashing on PCI-e 7900GTX

2006-06-03 Thread Mark Nipper
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nv
Version: 1:1.0.1.5-2
Severity: important

The card shows up as:

(rev a1)
:05:00.0 0300: 10de:0290 (rev a1)
---

I'm attaching my Xorg.0.log. I'm assuming this is probably
something already addressed in CVS with Xorg. But just in case it
isn't, upstream can be made aware of this at some point.

Let me know if you need any more information. The proprietary
nvidia driver works fine (using 1.0.8762-1). But I tested the nv
driver without ever having loaded the nvidia kernel module
(untainted kernel), so that shouldn't be an issue.

Missing pkgconfig files

2006-06-03 Thread John Rigg
I'm trying to compile a GTK2 app on AMD64 sid, but keep getting errors
about missing pkgconfig files, eg. /usr/lib/pkgconfig/xext.pc
and /usr/lib/pkgconfig/xi.pc.
These files should be in libxext-dev and libxi-dev according to the
package file search facility on debian.org, but I've installed these
packages and the files are missing. Can anyone tell me where they've
been moved to?

John

Bug#370167: Maybe xorg should conflit with vide

2006-06-03 Thread Pierre Machard
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.20
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

In one of my computer at home I had not made any upgrade since few
months. I had problem when running a dist-upgrade with testing.

I had to remove vide manually before being able to re-launch a
dist-upgrade. FYI vide installed its binary into /usr/bin/X11/vide

As far as I know vide was removed from stable, testing etc... but
existed into old stable. (my computer was previously under sarge
with (visibly) old packages inherited from previous release)

merkel% madison vide

Bug#370181: Monitor Display Size Incorrect

Video Hardware: Trident CyberBlade i7 AGP (8420-64)

Problem: Sarge installation sets the HP N3270 laptop display size to
800x600 (default?) when the display is 1024x768. Woody installation
worked perfectly with this laptop. At least four installation attempts
were tried with various choices for the following:

boot: linux vga=771 apci=off
Video drive - Trident
Auto detect monitor - NO (autodetect gave same result)
   LCD monitor
   Medium (other optios tired)
   1024x768 (75Hz, 70Hz and 60Hz are options all tried)

Bug#370189: libice-dev: Cannot finde -lICE

2006-06-03 Thread Vincent Lönngren

Bug#353494: (no subject)

2006-06-03 Thread Lee Cremeans
I did some more checking, and I can reproduce the bug running
kernel-image-2.4.27-586tsc on the same machine. I also cross-checked
with another OS (FreeBSD 6.1-RELEASE) to see if this is an upstream
problem, and X.org crashed in the same place (while drawing the default
stipple) with a SIGSEGV; this may be due to differences in how FreeBSD
handle illegal instructions in user mode. In any case, it would seem
CPUID is unusable from user mode on the Cyrix chips, and the
Cx486/586/6x86 don't have MMX, so the fix would be to make fbHaveMMX
check for a Cyrix processor before trying to use CPUID. I'll look at the
X.org code again and see what I can do.
