experimental upload of xfont and Xprint

2006-06-21 Thread Drew Parsons
As you're aware libxfont does not build with freetype 2.2. A patch
exists, but it has a problem or two. The problem is hard to pin down,
however. I only see it in some (not all) truetype fonts using the 10646
(unicode) registry, and only by using xfontsel or xfd.

I've uploaded a version with the patch to experimental so you can try it
for yourself if you want.

This is just a rough binary test for the patch, I haven't integrated it
as a proper source package.

Having a working (or mostly working) libxfont lets xprint work again, so
I've also uploaded a new version of xprint to experimental. This
requires a new xfixes, so I uploaded that as well.

The new xprint is simply provided as a service, but please report any
bugs you may find coming out of the new libxfont with the freetype2.2
patch. It would be helpful if we can find anywhere if it causes
problems for people. Do all programs display their fonts normally?

Drew

Since this warning note has been added specifically because the xserver is
being removed in situations we don't want it to, and the removal is being
caused by a new package that didn't exist in sarge, it is indeed very
difficult to detect the difference between an upgrade and a new install.

For d-i's purposes, preseeding this d-i note into oblivion is an option, but
it would be much nicer if someone could figure out how to keep the xserver
from being removed on upgrade in the first place.

I removed the AlwaysCore and/or SendCoreEvents, and now it works.
I mean, both built-in and external mouses give cursor movements,
and I finally get each button to produce a ButtonPress/ButtonRelease
event, no more mixing between button1 and button3.

I always wondered what is this SendCoreEvent good for ?

Bug#374839: xserver-xorg-core: rapid scrolling or repainting scrambles xterm or emacs display

2006-06-21 Thread Norman Ramsey
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1:1.0.2-8
Severity: normal

After a recent apt-get upgrade, I have noticed severe problems with
the screen becoming garbled on my Thinkpad X40. This may happen only
after an APM resume; I'm not sure. Strangely, the problem can
sometimes be cured by repeatedly switching back and forth between
internal and external display using Fn-F7.

I'm not sure how to describe the symptoms; the best I can do is that a
thin strip of scan lines---maybe three pixels high or so---becomes
replicated across a large fraction of the window, and the rest of the
window goes blank. It's almost as if the scan lines are scrambled
somehow. The effect is confined to a single window and doesn't affect
other windows on the same screen.

The two applications where the problem shows up consistently are xterm
and emacs:

 * When xterm scrolls, the part of the window that is newly painted
becomes scrambles. The problem can be mitigated by setting 'Jump
Scrolling' off in the xterm's ctrl-middle-click window.

 * When emacs scrolls and repaints, the window can become scrambled,
and typing ctrl-l to refresh the window scrambles the window
   completely.

Most interestingly, if I use my window manager to change virtual
panels on the desktop (I'm using fvwm), switching away from and back
to the offending application completely cures the screen. Likewise,
forcing a scrambled window to the bottom and then to the top fixes the
problem. Finally, dragging a small window over a bad window causes
the obscured regions to be repaired when they are uncovered again.
All these symptoms lead me to conjecture that when the app is asked to
paint the screen, it works fine, but some kinds of scrolling requests
cause the strangeness. That's why I'm reporting the bug against
/usr/bin/Xorg (my best guess) as opposed to something else.

I know this one is going to be hard to reproduce; please let me know
if I can provide other information. (And I'm not sure I know how to
downgrade to a previous version, but if you would like me to try that
and check for results, let me know that too.)

Hi Dirk,

Could you tell us which version of libice6 is installed on your system?

libice6: Installed: 1:1.0.0-3

(by the way, you should consider using the reportbug tool, which adds
useful information to bug reports, like versions of depended-on
packages)

I have tried using the reportbug tool but since the affected machine is
so
fragile at the moment it's a bit hard for me to embed the requested
information via copy and paste. I have luckily access to my mail program
now, but no shell at all! As soon as this problem is solved I will go
ahead
using reportbug.

Also please report the output of 'ldd /usr/lib/libSM.so.6' to the bug
address.

ldd /usr/lib/libSM.so.6 gives the following output:

linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xe000)
libICE.so.6 => /usr/lib/libICE.so.6 (0xb7f98000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xb7e43000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x8000)

Bug#374821: startx crashes after dist-upgrade

Hi, I'm Ramiro Cano.

After the dist-upgrade of yesterday, startx doesn't work anymore. I made
sure it's a window manager problem, and I also tried to solve the
problem by modifying the xorg.conf file because I though it could be a
problem of fonts.

I have the Xorg.0.log, but it's too long to attach (about 7 lines),
so I won't do, but you can request it if it can be useful

Here is the output of startx:

Have you verified that it's using direct rendering?

My apologies for reposting basically the same message. I did not see this

It does illustrate though how strongly the d-i team feels about this :-P

Bug#374775: kdeinit symbol lookup error for libSM6

2006-06-21 Thread Dirk Werner

Package:libsm6
Version:1:1.0.0-4

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, kernel 2.6.15, libc6 2.3.6-13.

After an update yesterday, Kde does not start up anymore, this is the content
of /home/user/.xsession-errors:

Xsession: X session started for dirk at Mi Jun 21 09:41:33 CEST 2006
startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libSM.so.6: undefined symbol:

I tried to downgrade libxft2 from 2.1.8.2-8 to 2.1.7 cause someone obviously had
success doing this but that caused no change for my system.

I didn't; you asked whether xlibmesa-gl-dev could supply it. As for
libgl1-mesa-dev, you'd have to ask Marcelo.

The trouble is that I normally want libgl1-mesa-dev but I cannot
simultaneously install libgl1-mesa-swx11-dev and libgl1-mesa-dev.
They both conflict with and provide "libgl-dev".

They both also come from the same source package "mesa", so I'm a
little puzzled that you suggest libgl1-mesa-dev cannot supply the GLw
library. Why is that?
