Bug#375460: Upgrade to linux kernel 2.6.17 makes Xserver crasing on startup

2006-06-26 Thread Marcel Sebek
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.22

Hi.

I upgraded kernel to 2.6.17 and xserver stopped working. I tried both
DRI enabled and disabled. I also tried disabling all modules and removing
all font directories, it didn't help.

The Xserver receives SIGSEG:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X11/X(xf86SigHandler+0x88) [0x80b8d98]
1: [0xe420]
2: /usr/bin/X11/X(main+0x5cc) [0x806e46c]
3: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xd0) [0xb7d51eb0]
4: /usr/bin/X11/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x91) [0x806d881]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

This is the trace with ati driver. I also tried vesa, the trace also
started with xf86SigHandler+0x88 and ended with FontFileCompleteXLFD,
but it has a few more lines between.

On attempting to upgrade x11-common from 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7 to
6.9.0.dfsg.1-4, it fails to upgrade with the error message:

Directory /usr/include/X11 on my system is currently a symlink to

I have successfully upgraded all other X11 packages to 6.9.0.dsfg.1-7,
except for xserver-xorg (which is still at 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7).

It looks to be the same issue, just with slightly later versions.

I have since upgraded x11-common and libxft-dev to the latest versions
in testing/etch, and I no longer experience this bug.

So, the problem has been fixed as far as I am concerned.

Thanks. And I will look harder next time to find related bug reports - I
did check x11-common's bug reports thoroughly, but apparently not
 libxft-dev.

Thanks, closing then.

Hello,

sometime in January xdm stopped displaying a background picture (and
boy, that gray grid pattern is ugly..). It seems that support for
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup was dropped silently. This contradicts the
documentation since xdm.1 still says that background images should be
set using Xsetup.

Please restore the original behavior, fix the man page or at least
document a workaround somewhere.

Regards

Diego

Upon upgrading xdm to version 6.9.0.dfsg-1.3, dpkg silently rewrote
/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config such that my Xsetup script does not get run
anymore. This is contrary to the xdm(1) manual page which clearly states
that the Xsetup script will get run:

After resetting the X server, xdm runs the Xsetup script to assist in
setting up the screen the user sees along with the xlogin widget.

If there is some good reason why the default configuration should
prevent local customizations of the login screen (such as installing a
nice background picture, or starting some buttons to shutdown or
reboot the machine), this should at least be documented. Neither the
changelog nor the NEWS file warned me that my local setup would stop
working.

Re: xorg error

2006-06-26 Thread Drew Parsons

How may I resolve this error reported in my xorg log:
EE) I810(0): [dri] I830DRIScreenInit failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] i915 kernel module version is 1.3.2 but version 1.4 or greater is
 needed.?

Probably need to upgrade your kernel. I think it's 2.6.16 or higher.
Make sure you have the latest libgl1-mesa-dri too.

Bug#375553: xserver-xorg: Server freezes switching to console and back

2006-06-26 Thread Nicola Girardi
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.22
Severity: grave

I start the X system typing startx, then go to the console pressing
C-M-Fn (for some n) and so some other stuff, the go back to X with
M-F7. At that point, either it takes a while and becomes usable
again, or it freezes and the only thing left to do is shut the server
down with C-M-BackSpace. There doesn't seem a pattern showing in what
cases it hangs and in what cases it doesn't. I'm using the following
card, as shown by lspci:

Re: monitor blanking randomly

2006-06-26 Thread martin f krafft
also sprach martin f krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006.06.09.2013 +0200]:
It works, but every now and then, screen0's monitor will just blank
for a second, then come back up. It'll do that 3-7 times, then it'll
 be fine for a while.

I can reproduce this semi-reliably by scrolling large portions of
a page in a full-screen firefox window. I cannot seem to do that in
a non-full-screen window.

Bug#375587: Package recommends xkeyboard-config which does not exist.

2006-06-26 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1:1.0.2-8
Severity: minor

xserver-xorg-core recommends the xkeyboard-config package which does not
exist in the archive. There only exists a source package
xkeyboard-config which produces the binary package xkb-data. The
Recommends: should be updated accordingly or removed if it is no longer
valid.

Re: Bug#375460: Upgrade to linux kernel 2.6.17 makes Xserver crasing on startup

2006-06-26 Thread Drew Parsons

I upgraded kernel to 2.6.17 and xserver stopped working.

Just for reference, I've upgraded to 2.6.17 but X is working same as it
did before (i810). I'm sorry I don't have a suggestion for fixing your
crash.

Drew
