Come on people. I know I've seen this error come up before. Assert is a
macro, not a function. Please don't add packages, even to unstable, if
they won't work under any circumstances. Especially for something like
this:

Yes, although it might also make sense to try the current master and
ati-1-0-branch heads.

I tried this out. All revisions built OK, but all caused the monitor to
 power off.

Installing the old xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-video-ati gives a
 working setup.

I also tried using git-bisect with
 git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/xserver, but done of the
revisions would compile due to various type errors, I guess due to the
 incompatible changes made since 7.0.

Did you try the server-1_1-branch? Maybe we could help you get past the
errors if you posted them.

Is there anything else I can do?

Some ideas:

  * Build 6.6.2 against xserver-xorg-dev 1.0 and see if that works.
  * Look for any differences in the log files.

I'm not using the debian package... but this was a good suggestion since
upgrading nvidia driver solved the problem.
I didn't think about it immediately cos generally when something in X related
to nvidia change, X doesn't start at all and I have nvidia related error
messages in X log. This time everything went smooth with the exception of
 fonts.

Depending on the definition of 'missing fonts', ignoring the
incompatible ABI between X server and driver could have caused this...

That's not really a good solution though, as it won't allow using the
mouse once the X server is started. It would be better to make sure the
kernel module behind /dev/input/mice gets loaded regardless of whether
there's any mice connected. Longer term, the upcoming X server
input-hotplug support should should solve this cleanly.

 Hi!

After upgrading from xorg 7.0 - 7.1 the xserver crashes when working

included in Debian). The server crashes when moving, resizing or
changing the content of the main window. When using the fglrx driver

is displayed. The following backtrace is added to the xorg logfile:

This is probably really a bug in mesa-swx11-source and should be fixed
in the Mesa 6.5.1 release, which should be packaged for Debian 'soon'.

You probably really want to use direct rendering though?

No firms plans but we are expecting to ship mesa 6.5.1 with compiz and

that is within a couple of weeks, not months. Those responsible for the
actual uploads will be doing evaluations to ensure it won't disrupt the

Package watch files

2006-09-25 Thread Thierry Reding
Hi all,

I've just noticed that most of the XSF packages don't ship with a watch-file.
Now, I know that some people don't like watch-files and other do, so I wanted
to ask what the XSF's stance was.

I have already talked to Drew Parsons about this on IRC, and he referred me
to the XSF todo list[0], which lists the watch columns on the QA[1] page as
one item to be done. Now, following the watch column links to the DEHS
page[2], and by looking at the source of the DEHS scripts on alioth, it very
much looks like these scripts use a database constructed from package watch-
files to show a package's status (I will try to contact the author of DEHS
to confirm this).

That said, and if nobody has any objections, I was planning to systematically
go through the SVN trunk and add watch-files to packages that don't have one
yet.

Bug#389404: [savage] savage DRI driver does not work with X.org 7.1.1

2006-09-25 Thread Martin Steigerwald
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-1
Severity: normal

Hello, Savage DRI driver does not work with X.org 7.1.1, it works
okay with 7.0.22.

With 7.1.1 I the window that glxgears opens remains black. glxinfo
still shows Direct Rendering: Yes. Also with supertux in GL mode
the screen stays blank. Both consume all of the available CPU
power while running.

AFAIK this is an upstream bug. It has been discussed on the moderated
mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
http://probo.probo.com/pipermail/savage40/2006-August/000490.html

From what I understand this is the bug in question:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=195851

There seems to be a patch available that fixes this and some
other savage problems:
http://probo.probo.com/pipermail/savage40/2006-September/000512.html

According Alex Deucher who did the patch it is sent to upstream already
and will be contained in the next version of the savage DRI driver:
http://probo.probo.com/pipermail/savage40/2006-September/000513.html

So it would be nice to have that version, preferably in time Etch...
I am willing to test any savage driver package for stability issues ;)

Regards, Martin

Bug#389416: xserver-xorg-video-via makes screen black

2006-09-25 Thread moonykily
package: xserver-xorg-video-via
version: 0.2.1-4

Recently I updated my xserver-xorg-video-via driver. After reboot, I found my
screen black. The system is still running, because I can type my password to
get into kde -- I can hear its startup music, but can see nothing. Even I
press ctrlaltF1 to switch to console, the screen is still black.

I'm using Debian Sid, kernel 2.6.17-2-k7, libc6 2.3.6.ds1-4, and xorg 7.1.1.
My motherboard is ABIT KV80, VIA K8M800 + VT8237 chipsets, and my graphics
card is Integrated Unichrome Pro Graphics with 2D/3D/Video controller.

Bug#389433: xserver-xorg-video-fbdev: Rotate option does not work anymore

2006-09-25 Thread Samuel Mimram
Package: xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
Version: 1:0.3.0-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

I use fbdev to rotate my screen (my monitor can be turned vertically) since
the driver (ati) for my video card does not support it. The corresponding
option in xorg.conf is:

Option Rotate CCW

It used to work very well, but since the last reboot of my box I get an
unreadable screen with this option. It looks like four interleaved
copies of the screen (shown horizontally) evenly horizontally
translated (it's a bit hard to describe it, but in one word, it's a
mess).

I guess that the problem was introduced between 1:0.1.0.5-2 and
1:0.3.0-3. It's a bit hard to track this more precisely since no
upstream changelog is shipped with the pacakge.

Feel free to tell me if you need me to do some tests, etc.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Samuel.

Package: xserver-xorg-input-evdev
Version: 1:1.1.2-3

some more info on the previous fix.

for an uknown reason to me, now the mouse needs to have xmodmap run in
order to have proper use of its keys. in latest versions of X that
wasn't necessary.

on this logitech mx510, this xmodmap string was needed: pointer = 1 2 3 4 5 8
9 6 7

Bug#389476: xterm: ansi color slows scrolling down

2006-09-25 Thread Friedrich Delgado Friedrichs
Package: xterm
Version: 210-3
Severity: minor

I've noticed that there is a considerable slowdown in scrolling speed
when lines contain ansi-color codes that change the background (!)
colour.

This slowdown is hardly noticeable on a reasonably fast machine, but
on my trusty old toshiba libretto (only 266 Mhz, but I'll never part
with it) listing a directory with 200 files with ls --color=yes is
unbearably slow.

This must have crept in a few updates ago, I can't remember scrolling
being that slow on the laptop before. It's not fixed in 210-3.1
(tested on the laptop, uses same distribution and software, but
neomagic display hardware) and not in upstream (220) either.

The following loop in a bash tests that behaviour:

bogomips=`grep bogomips /proc/cpuinfo|tail -1|cut -f2 -d:|cut -f1 -d.`;
wallclock=`date +%s`;i=0; while [ $i -lt $bogomips ]; do echo -e
\033[47m$i\033[00m; i=$(($i + 1)); done; echo $((`date +%s` - $wallclock))
seconds

Outputs numbers up to $bogomips with white background. Will take about
10 seconds on my athlon 550 at home and the machines at work (intel
2800 mhz), and about 55 seconds on my laptop. I assume something
causes additional sluggishness on the laptop (maybe the display
driver? There's an old bug at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1877 which might be
related).

The slowdown only happens when the background colour is changed, so if
you change the first escape sequence in the echo string to e.g.
\033[31m (red foreground) the whole loop takes about 1 second.

Also there is no slowdown in rxvt, on any machine.

I think this should probably be forwarded to upstream but I'd like it
to be in the debian BTS nonetheless.

Finally I manage to hit a bug that is actually reproducible! :)

Kind regards
 Friedel

After an unstable update, I got an error dialogue box at Gnome startup
regarding the keyboard. The root cause is the file
/usr/share/X11/xkb/geometry/thinkpad
which tries to include files from the ibm_vndr directory, which no
longer exists.

I think I was bitten by this bug. After a reboot, Emacs doesn't
recognize anymore the Alt key as Meta.

FWIW, the bug is present also in version 0.8-12exp4.

The xmodmap output changes from (0.8-12):

Log:
* Add patch from Cyril Brulebois to allow package to build on HURD, which
lacks DRI and directfb. This includes not using lib-directfb in the
build-depends for hurd-i386. It also creates a new debian config,
debian-indirect, which is used when building for HURD. This config is
invoked in the debian-dri config on hurd-i386. Thanks to Cyril Brulebois
for the patch, Michael Banck, Michel D?\195?\164nzer, and Samuel Thibault for
input on an appropriate fix. (closes: #358065)

Bug#389007: [Xorg-driver-ati] Bug#389007: Regression: Radeon 9200 powers off Apple Cinema Display connected via DVI

What monitor model is it precisely ?

 It's a 2005 Aluminium 20 Cinema Display. Model No. A1081 according
the bottom edge. It has built-in USB and FireWire hubs and
touch-sensitive brightness and power buttons on the right-hand edge,
 if that helps.

Sounds like the same as mine except mine is 23... did we change
something there ?

I fixed a problem at one point that was causing exactly that
behaviour on my Apple Cinema HD display. The problem was that the
driver was leaving the i2c lines used for DDC in the high state. I
put them back down at the end of the DDC procedure and that fixed
it. Now it's possible that this change got lost ...

It was a problem for me IIRC around May/June 2005.

Bug#389506: fails to configure with debconf

2006-09-25 Thread Joshua Kwan
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-1
Severity: grave

I installed etch from a beta3 CD and upgraded to sid. After installing
xserver-xorg to satisfy the dependency of fglrx-driver, I got a dialog
box saying:

Empty value: A null entry is not permitted for this value.

Hitting OK just causes it to be shown again. I cannot install X..

Here's the debconf debug output:

debconf (developer): -- 0 ok
debconf (developer): -- INPUT low xserver-xorg/config/monitor/identifier
debconf (developer): -- 30 question skipped
debconf (developer): -- GO

debconf (developer): -- 0 false
debconf (developer): -- INPUT critical xserver-xorg/config/null_string_error

(at this point the error is shown, and the cycle begins again)

Bug#389514: xserver-xorg-input-keyboard: implicit pointer conversion

2006-09-25 Thread dann frazier
Package: xserver-xorg-input-keyboard
Version: 1:1.1.0-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Our automated buildd log filter[1] detected a problem that will cause
your package to segfault on architectures where the size of a pointer
is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.

X Strike Force X.Org X11 SVN commit: r3510 - trunk/lib/libxcomposite/debian

2006-09-25 Thread X Strike Force SVN Repository Admin
Author: beatle
Date: 2006-09-26 01:02:17 -0400 (Tue, 26 Sep 2006)
New Revision: 3510

Modified:
   trunk/lib/libxcomposite/debian/changelog
   trunk/lib/libxcomposite/debian/control
Log:
Update the build-dependencies to more closely reflect the list of packages
needed to satisfy PKG_CHECK_MODULES.

Also remove the build-dependency on libxdamage-dev, because the package
doesn't seem to use it at all and builds fine without it.

Daniel Stone initially introduced the build-dependency on libxdamage-dev.
Daniel, if you are reading this, can you think of anything that will break by
removing that build-dependency?

With that change the package is ready, so feel free to upload anyone.
