Bug#390503: killing gconf helps, unseting not
* Evgeni Golov wrote: Hi, deleting the gconf* and gnome2* folders helps - after that I had window-borders with compiz. Is this a general compiz/gconf bug, or did it happen because of the previos installation of compiz from the ubunti package from compiz.net? I did also run into this bug a couple of days ago, but wasn't able to trace it to its source. I found that it helps to run the following: $ gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz and restart compiz. That way you'll loose all the settings you've changed in compiz, but I guess it's better than deleting the complete gconf and gnome2 directories. I have personally never used the Ubuntu packages, nor the ones from compiz.net, so it's probably unrelated. So far, the only explanation I have is that it might have something to do with installing a new compiz.schemas file, which is what I did before I was hit by the bug. It's really an issue with all drivers, but the ati one has a ton of options. It'd be nice if it was more clever about using those options when necessary. I currently have no idea how feasible this is in reality though. Note that this is an XAA option, not a driver option. The driver doesn't have the information to decide when to disable offscreen pixmaps with XAA. I wonder if patching the server to automatically enable this when radeon is loaded until we have a good fix is worthwhile... It would be a big performance penalty for people using XAA but not a compositing manager, i.e. probably the majority for some time to come. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | http://tungstengraphics.com Libre software enthusiast | Debian, X and DRI developer

Re: Help compiling 4.3.0 for 3.1 stable
Thanks very much Aaron for your help. For the benefit of newbies with similar questions, and without wanting to continue discussion on this list, here is what I did. BTW, Google has a new code search service: http://www.google.com/codesearch/advanced_code_search You will almost certainly need to install a number of additional packages; apt-get build-dep xfree86 should take care of that step. Indeed - 30 packages which I won't list here. As you suggested, I downloaded the .dsc file and used dpkg-source: In a directory zz/ with: xfree86_4.3.0.dfsg.1.orig.tar.gz xfree86_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1.diff.gz xfree86_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1.dsc I ran: dpkg-source -x xfree86_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1.dsc This gave me: zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/xfree86-4.3.0.tar.gz zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/local/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/patches/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/po/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/scripts/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/README zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/rules Executable zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/debian/... and many more files Then from zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/: debian/rules unpacked created: zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/stampdir/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/stampdir/log/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/stampdir/sources/ zz/XF-comp/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/xc/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/xc/config/ zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/xc/doc/ etc. - the source tree Now: debian/rules setup works like a charm. It applies about 240 patches from debian/patches. Being a newbie, I didn't know what to do next, so I looked at debian/rules to find a target which would compile the whole thing. I chose build-arch-only without too much thought. debian/rules build-arch-only After 1.5 hours, I had a largish (22 Megs) XFree86 server binary (I guess it compiled in all the drivers rather than making them modules) in: zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/xc/programs/Xserver/ which I could copy to /usr/X11R6/bin/ in place of the old 1.7 Meg version. This runs fine. There was also a very large XFree86 in another tree under: zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/xc-xserver-xfree86-dbg/ which I guess is full of debugging information. Googling reveals that this build-arch-only target is not favoured: http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2006/04/msg00064.html and that most people use dpkg-buildpackage instead. I found that I could change some code in: zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86Xinput.c and recompile the server only from: zz/xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1/build-tree/xc/programs/Xserver/ with: make Makefile make Makefiles make includes make depend make The resulting XFree86 server in that directory embodied my changes. Other newbies might pursue more conventional approaches to building via: man dpkg-buildpackage http://people.debian.org/~mpalmer/debian-mentors_FAQ.html http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-debpkg.html http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html#s-debianrules - Robinhttp://www.firstpr.com.au -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#391376: xserver should be able to write multiple xsession-errors
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.0.20 Severity: wishlist Tags: patch Hello Xorg-Team and Maintainers, my ${HOME} is mounted via NFS and I am using three Workstations called michelle1, multimedia and devel. Now, I have the problem, that only the first started xserver can write the ~/xsession-errors and if there are errors on other xservers I will not aware of it. The next Problem was my devel machine where I run directly 4 X-Servers for Unstable, Testing, Stable and Old-Stable... After puzzeling a little bit arround I have create a a working patch for /etc/X11/Xsession which I use since over 2 years. How it works: 1. If noting is done, the $USER will not notice ANY changes 2. If the $USER do a 'touch ~/.xsession-errdir' then /etc/X11/Xsession will automaticaly use the directory ~/log/xsession/ which is created if it does not exist. 3. My patch use 'hostname -a' and ${DISPLAY} 4. It produce logfiles like: -rw--- 1 236546 2006-09-30 13:16 20060930100108-devel.private:1 -rw--- 1 23966 2006-09-30 15:58 20060930154500-devel.private:2 -rw--- 1 3599 2006-10-04 03:35 20060930155353-devel.private:3 -rw--- 1 10995 2006-09-30 20:39 20060930203827-devel.private:2 -rw--- 1 52535 2006-10-05 11:57 20061002121644-michelle1.private:0 -rw--- 1 11654 2006-10-05 13:32 20061005133103-devel.private:1 and here some older one: log/xsession/BACKUP: insgesamt 1366 -rw-rw-r-- 1843 2006-03-05 00:31 20060305001651-devel.private:2.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1922 2006-03-05 00:21 20060305001952-devel.private:0.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1916 2006-03-05 00:31 20060305002248-devel.private:0.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1924 2006-03-05 00:31 20060305002437-devel.private:1.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 1034 2006-03-05 00:27 20060305002801-devel.private:8.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1844 2006-03-05 00:31 20060305002834-devel.private:8.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1306 2006-03-05 00:38 20060305004155-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 2093 2006-03-06 17:26 20060305014015-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1843 2006-03-05 12:35 20060305115750-devel.private:2.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1364 2006-03-05 12:33 20060305123900-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 3131 2006-03-08 20:58 20060305124142-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1816 2006-03-05 13:00 20060305125605-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1842 2006-03-05 13:00 20060305125755-devel.private:2.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1816 2006-03-05 13:36 20060305132436-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1865 2006-03-05 14:08 20060305134240-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1842 2006-03-05 15:07 20060305145628-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1817 2006-03-05 15:07 20060305145845-devel.private:4.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 1547 2006-03-05 21:58 20060305213548-devel.private:4.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 1805 2006-03-05 23:02 20060305215945-devel.private:4.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 2421 2006-03-05 22:57 20060305220812-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1910 2006-03-06 01:05 20060306010232-devel.private:4.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1861 2006-03-06 01:07 20060306010321-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1797 2006-03-06 19:22 20060306192044-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1590 2006-03-06 19:27 20060306192814-devel.private:3.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 2047 2006-03-13 01:16 20060311154152-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw-rw-r-- 1 2627 2006-03-26 15:24 20060311161641-devel.private:3.gz -rw--- 1421 2006-03-13 01:32 20060313012049-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1845 2006-03-13 02:17 20060313013317-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1690 2006-03-13 02:23 20060313022301-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1 1143 2006-03-13 03:08 20060313024124-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1 1186 2006-03-13 03:38 20060313031345-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1 335344 2006-03-26 20:55 20060313063000-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1155 2006-03-23 11:37 20060323113612-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1155 2006-03-23 12:47 20060323124606-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1155 2006-03-23 13:08 20060323130713-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1155 2006-03-23 13:09 20060323130753-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1155 2006-03-23 22:53 20060323225218-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1153 2006-03-23 23:09 20060323230736-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1153 2006-03-23 23:10 20060323230840-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1153 2006-03-23 23:27 20060323232547-mobilix.private:0.gz -rw--- 1 1121 2006-03-26 15:48 20060326152906-devel.private:3.gz -rw--- 1 1078 2006-03-29 04:39 2006032620-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1710 2006-03-30 03:20 20060329141811-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1 4326 2006-04-10 15:19 20060329141847-devel.private:3.gz -rw--- 1466 2006-03-30 03:31 20060330032025-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1571 2006-03-30 03:33 20060330033101-michelle1.private:0.gz -rw--- 1497

Bug#391389: xkb-data: With uk keyboard, Shift-3 gives 3 instead of the sterling character

OK, why was uk accepted by the X server, then? My current bet is that it wasn't. Did you check /var/log/{Xorg.0,*dm}.log files? I haven't kept the Xorg.0.log file, but I had a look at it and the uk option was accepted. Not even a warning. Moreover, all the keys gave the expected character, except Shift-3, which gave 3 instead of the sterling character. -- Vincent Lefèvre [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Web: http://www.vinc17.org/ 100% accessible validated (X)HTML - Blog: http://www.vinc17.org/blog/ Work: CR INRIA - computer arithmetic / Arenaire project (LIP, ENS-Lyon)
Bug#390203: problem lies with xserver-xorg-mga-1.2.1.3
Same problem with a G400. 1600x1200 worked before, but after upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.2.1.3.dfsg.1-2, nothing above 1152x864 worked. No pertinent error messages (that I could see) in the logfile, and the monitor goes into DPMS standby mode. Ctrl-alt-backspace restores the terminal. Same behavior as if, in the old days, a misconfigured X modeline tried to drive the monitor at too high a frequency. Which is odd, because my Viewsonic GS790 is capable of 1600x1200 at least. Downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-mga_1.4.1.dfsg.1-4 by hand restored video. Alex Winbow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#391052: Likewise
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.1.0-2 Followup-For: Bug #391052 Same problem here. Affects me with both video drivers I tried (radeon and fbdev). Interestingly, while Ctrl-Alt-F1 works, the F1 still gets passed through to the apps, so that when I get back there's usually a help window waiting for me. Not sure if that might be related. Xev shows nothing on Ctrl-Alt-KP+/-, but repeated and undefinable mashing of those keys occasionally spits out XF86_Next_VMode or XF86_Prev_VMode. Each key says Control_L, Alt_L, and KP_Add respectively. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers experimental APT policy: (1000, 'experimental'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18 Locale: LANG=eo.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=eo.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages xserver-xorg depends on: ii debconf 1.5.5Debian configuration management sy ii x11-common 1:7.1.0-2X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc ii xbase-clients 1:7.1.ds-3 miscellaneous X clients ii xkb-data0.8-17 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xserver-xorg-core 2:1.1.1-9X.Org X server -- core server ii xserver-xorg-input-evde 1:1.1.2-3X.Org X server -- evdev input driv ii xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1:1.1.0-3X.Org X server -- keyboard input d ii xserver-xorg-input-mous 1:1.1.1-3X.Org X server -- mouse input driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ark 1:0.6.0-3X.Org X server -- ark display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.2-2X.Org X server -- ATI display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-chip 1:1.1.1-4X.Org X server -- Chips display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-cirr 1:1.1.0-3X.Org X server -- Cirrus display d ii xserver-xorg-video-cyri 1:1.1.0-4X.Org X server -- Cyrix display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-dumm 1:0.2.0-3X.Org X server -- dummy display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-fbde 1:0.3.0-3X.Org X server -- fbdev display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-glin 1:1.1.1-3X.Org X server -- Glint display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-i128 1:1.2.0-3X.Org X server -- i128 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i740 1:1.1.0-3X.Org X server -- i740 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i810 2:1.6.5-3X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx ii xserver-xorg-video-imst 1:1.1.0-3X.Org X server -- IMSTT display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-mga 1:1.4.1.dfsg.1-4 X.Org X server -- MGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-neom 1:1.1.1-4X.Org X server -- Neomagic display ii xserver-xorg-video-newp 1:0.2.0-3X.Org X server -- Newport display ii xserver-xorg-video-nsc 1:2.8.1-3X.Org X server -- NSC display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-nv [ 1:1.2.0-3X.Org X server -- NV display drive ii xserver-xorg-video-rend 1:4.1.0.dfsg.1-4 X.Org X server -- Rendition displa ii xserver-xorg-video-s3vi 1:1.9.1-3X.Org X server -- S3 ViRGE display ii xserver-xorg-video-sava 1:2.1.2-1X.Org X server -- Savage display d ii xserver-xorg-video-sili 1:1.4.1-4X.Org X server -- SiliconMotion di ii xserver-xorg-video-sis 1:0.9.1-3X.Org X server -- SiS display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-sisu 1:0.8.1-3X.Org X server -- SiS USB display ii xserver-xorg-video-tdfx 1:1.2.1-5X.Org X server -- tdfx display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-tga 1:1.1.0-3X.Org X server -- TGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-trid 1:1.2.1-3X.Org X server -- Trident display ii xserver-xorg-video-tsen 1:1.1.0-3X.Org X server -- Tseng display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-v4l 0.1.1-3 X.Org X server -- Video 4 Linux di ii xserver-xorg-video-vesa 1:1.2.1-3X.Org X server -- VESA display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-vga 1:4.1.0-3X.Org X server -- VGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-via 1:0.2.1-5X.Org X server -- VIA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-vmwa 1:10.13.0-3 X.Org X server -- VMware display d ii xserver-xorg-video-vood 1:1.1.0-3X.Org X server -- Voodoo display d Versions of packages xserver-xorg recommends: pn discover1 | discover none(no description available) ii laptop-detect 0.12.1attempt to detect a laptop ii mdetect0.5.2.1 mouse device autodetection tool ii xresprobe 0.4.23debian1 X Resolution Probe -- debconf information: xserver-xorg/multiple_possible_x-drivers: xserver-xorg/config/monitor/use_sync_ranges: * xserver-xorg/config/inputdevice/mouse/port: /dev/input/mice xserver-xorg/config/monitor/lcd: false xserver-xorg/config/device/default-identifier: xserver-xorg/autodetect_monitor: true xserver-xorg/config/display/default_depth: 24 xserver-xorg/config/display/modes: 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480 xserver-xorg/config/inputdevice/keyboard/internal: * xserver-xorg/config/inputdevice/keyboard/options: *
Bug#391052: ctrl-alt-+/- not working
I am also seeing the problem reported in #391052 with ctrl-alt-+/- not working. I see the problem on several systems: System #1: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200] (rev 01) xserver-xorg 7.1.0-1 xserver-xorg-input-kbd 1.1.0-2 xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.6.2-2 System #2: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 65) with the etch version ( xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.5.8.0-1) I don't see the problem but when I upgraded to latest unstable (6.6.2-2) it broke. Hope this additional data helps. Let me know if you need me to try anything else. -- Matt Taggart [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
