Bug#392312: xserver-xorg-core: [sparc] Freezes system and causes severe data loss

2006-10-11 Thread Frans Pop
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1:1.0.2-9
Severity: grave
Justification: starting Xorg trashes partition tables

I tested Xorg on my Sparc Ultra 10 and experienced system freezes. When I
rebooted after one of these freezes, the partition table of my first
harddisk had disappeared making it necessary to install the system from
scratch.

The disk has never before shown problems and also showed no problems
during and after the reinstallation.

Jurij Smakov found the following bug reported by the Sparc upstream kernel
maintainer. It seems to me that it could well explain both the hang and,
because apparently it messes with the IDE controller too, the corruption
of the hard disk.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8020

[...]

And joy, oh joy, I have just discovered that after the last try the
partition table of my second harddisk (that contained my /home dir) is
now gone as well!
So I'd say that proves the relationship between running Xorg and that
problem.

I have confirmed that I do indeed have the SIMBA Advanced PCI Bridge.

I asked this on irc, but you weren't around when I was. Is it ok if I
revert the 0.2 commit on trunk so I can upload this fix?

Why not upload 0.2? It runs fine for me and also has metacity theme support
now. I patched it to build against the metacity currently in unstable.

It should allow compiz to build on the arches it ftbfs'ed on.

I was under the impression that the FTBFS'es were only due to missing
libxcomposite = 0.3 on those arches, which should have been fixed by the -3
revision. By the way: -3 was tagged, but was it ever uploaded?

If you want to do it too, go for it, as I'm not sure I'll be able to do much
work over the next day or two for personal reasons.

I will probably not get the time until the weekend, but as I said, maybe we
can just upload 0.2-1. That way, we can get an official version (tarball
included) in.

The minor updates are fine, although they don't really seem to be
worthwhile iirc, since they basically just allow you to run lint during
builds, which isn't interesting to us. If you want to do the update though,
 go for it.

I'd like to do it for aesthetic purity, so we can say etch really does
contain X11R7.1 without having to cough about thte ifs and buts.

As for xss, I say we leave the package name as it is for etch and then fix
it later. Changing the package name this late in the game doesn't really
buy us anything interesting. I'd be happy to have it be one of those
instant changes we make once etch is out though.

OK, we'll keep it as libxss for now then.

I'm interested in packaging the developmental i810 (intel) modesetting
branch. Alan is keen for people to test it. I'd think to call the new
package xserver-xorg-video-intel, since I think X.org upstream will be
calling it intel once it's finally released. I'd put lots of this
driver is a development snapshot, only use it if you really mean it
  warnings into the description.

I'm not sure renaming the driver is a good move right now. I don't want to
jump the gun on upstream. I also don't want people who will inevitably fail
to read the warning to install it thinking that it's the only intel video
driver when they should be using the i810 package. Admittedly,
 xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting is a mouthful, so if there's a
compromise in there somewhere that'd probably be ideal.

Ah I see. Because the upstream module was renamed xf86-video-intel, I
had assumed they were renaming the new driver intel. But looking
inside the modesetting branch I see the driver is still called i810.
So you're right, xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting makes more sense
in that case, until upstream fully renames it. Unless I missed
something, this means i810-modesetting will have to conflict with (and
replace) i810, since it generates the same i810_drv.so (rather than
intel_drv.so which is what I had assumed it was doing). A pity, since
this makes it a little harder to test and compare the two side by side.

Umm, -3 hasn't been uploaded to unstable yet... It was tagged

This illustrates nicely the dangers of closing bugs with things
that aren't a Closes: tag in the changelog, or the 'upload has

the changelog. ^_^

I'm gonna steal this bug, since the original submitter apparently
solved their problem by installing the pacakge version whose
versioned dependancy was missed.

Bug#377328: add truetype and cid fonts

severity 197156 important
clone 197156 -1
reassign -1 x11-common

Now that xfs-xtt is gone, xfs needs to include it's fonts. Additionally
dexconf needs to list them in xorg.conf.

Note that the patch in 377328 only adds truetype, but I believe CID needs
to be added as well.

Re the severity: this is a pretty important bug: after upgrading, my
KDE desktop was totally blank, missing all icons. They came back after
adding the TrueType fonts, also all my fonts were messed up. And then
there is the flash player issue. So this is pretty important to be fixed
before etch is released.

It would be nice to change in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us : (section
alt-intl):

key AE09 { [  9, parenleft,   dead_breve,dead_breve ] };
key AE10 { [  0, parenright,  dead_abovering,dead_abovering ] };

to

key AE09 { [  9,  parenleft, leftsinglequotemark,  dead_breve ]};
key AE10 { [  0, parenright, rightsinglequotemark, dead_abovering ] };

(as used in section intl).

Reason: in the present alt-intl version, both alt-9 and shift-alt-9
produce dead_breve. This a bit of a waste of key combinations.

The proposed modification leaves dead_breve and dead_abovering available
with shift-alt, but produces an easy way to type single-quotes by means of
alt. Single-quotes are very useful things to have on a system.

Regards, Jan

Bug#392498: palmax touchscreen logic bug prevents use in low loads

2006-10-11 Thread Yann Vernier
Package: xserver-xorg-input-palmax
Version: 1.0.0.5-2

The palmax touchscreen driver contains a bug related to
the parsing of data from the serial port. The problem
occurs when less than five bytes have been read after the
current package to be processed, a very frequent case
except when the system is under high load. The result is
that touchscreen data is discarded instead of parsed,
rendering the touchscreen unresponsive.

I have found the faulty logic and am attaching a patch
which seems to solve the problem correctly for me, though
it could probably use a second set of eyes to check for
other thinkos.

I am using a Palmax PD-1100, and with this patch applied
my touchscreen seems to work fine.

Hi,

currently it's difficult for someone with little knowledge of the Debian
package pool to find out what package is missing if an X server reports
unable to open default font 'fixed'. It would be great if apt-cache search
could be used to discover xfonts-base.

The paragraph

If you are not using a remote font server, you must install this package if
you are installing an X server. It contains fonts without which X servers
 will not work.

could be rephrased to read

If you are not using a remote font server, you must install this package if
you are installing an X server. It contains fonts such as 'fixed' without
which X servers will not work.
