Hi,

I tried to take your set of installed packages and reproduce a similar
upgrade (although with sarge's aptitude).

These are the steps I followed:
- debootstrap sarge
- take your dpkg status file, and generate the list of installed
  packages, with something like
  grep-dctrl -FStatus -sPackage 'ok installed'
- remove from it the packages that weren't in sarge
- apt-get install $(cat packages) in the chroot
[ see in attachment the list of packages installed at this point ]
- deal with udev not detecting the chroot (#395889) :)
- sed -i s/sarge/etch/ etc/apt/sources.list
- optionally, add "deb http://people.debian.org/~jcristau/xorg/ ./" to
  sources.list to test r4176
- aptitude update
- aptitude dist-upgrade [ output attached ]

The change I made to xserver-xorg in svn r4176 doesn't seem to change
much in this case. The only difference between the what happens with -9
and with this version is the installation of fglrx-driver,
fglrx-kernel-src and xserver-xorg-input-acecad with xorg -9 (probably
because of the Depends on xserver-xorg-video-1.0 and xserver-xorg-input
without alternative, aptitude pulls in as many drivers as possible).
So overall the only thing that I find odd with this upgrade is the
removal of openoffice.org, but that's probably not X-related :)

My next try will be to see what happens when upgrading with etch's
aptitude.

Cheers,
Julien

The Xserver freezes if the machine resumes from suspend to disk and DRI
is enabled on an ATI Radeon card, at least on my ATI Radeon Mobility M6
LY. It will completly lock the machine. This is a known problem. Charl
Botha has written a patch for this. Since it is still not included in the
XF86 cvs and is also missing in XFree86 4.3 according to
 and my own
experience with 4.3, I would like to have the patches applied for the
Debian package xserver-xfree86.

More information about this problem can be found at
, patches can be found at
.

I am using the suspend to disk feature of the APM bios, not the swsusp
of the Linux kernel.

Closing the bug since the patches got applied a while ago. Feel free to
reopen if the bug still occurs, but I am pretty sure resuming from
suspend has been working fine on these Radeon chips for a while.

since i've upgraded, X is quite broken : i can't do start anything

Hi,

Alex Deucher produced a patch to enable PowerPlay on the radeon chipset:
the patch is at http://www.botchco.com/alex/radeon/dynamicPM/hy0/. I
simply adapted the that patch to the the Debian package and recompiled.

I've been running now with DynamicPM set to true on my radeon M9000 and
I get less fan activity and more battery power. I include the patch here
in the hope that it can make it into the Debian package.

thanks
graziano

Bug#405639:

2007-01-05 Thread peter green
What is wrong with both having the -all packages in reccomends on thier own (so
that reccomends using package managers always pull them in on sarge-etch
upgrades) AND also having them as an alternative in depends so that they get
pulled in by new installs made using package management tools that don't
understand reccomends.

that is i understand why the reccomends were changed to fix the other bug but
not why the depends were changed at the same time.

seems to be unrelated. Did any of you guys reproduce the problem
recently? If not, I will close this bug in the next weeks.

Thanks for checking.

I'm pretty sure I've run into the problem within the last year (I'm
now running Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS), but to be honest, I don't go out of my
way trying to repro this bug since it's pretty catastrophic.

If you want, I'll clear a little time on my schedule and see if it
repros -- I predict it will.

i suspect this will also happen if a user selects the Desktop task from
debian-installer, as tasksel uses "aptitude --without-recommends". and
that's probaly not the only package burned by this bug (i think ltsp and
live-package are suffer).

is there some other way the upgrading issues could be addressed?

Bug#327497: Duplicate of #338241?

2007-01-05 Thread Mario Frasca
Hi Michel,

short story:
OK, bug disappeared for me too.

longer story:
I have completely reinstalled my system, about two months ago, bought
a new larger HD, further the same hardware.

one of the tests I run after installation was on fbdev and it still had
this problem.

I did not yet set up automatic update/upgrade and yesterday, after
holidays and some skipped upgrades, I had some serious problems getting
the system up again... in particular I could not use X any more - at all!

so immediately after one reboot I opened the xorg.conf file and went
back from ati to fbdev and I'm up again, X usable, no swapped colours,
no locked system! -> me happy user.

will need to file a bug regarding the ati driver or see if it has
already reported...

ciao,
thanks,
Mario

Packaging NoMachine NX

Yes, this is the nx-X11 package, right? Are there other difficult packages
besides this?

Here's the diffstat for nx-X11-2.1.0-2 against whatever version of XFree86
they use (made by comparing with the .XF86.original files they are shipping,
so I hope they didn't introduce other changes from upstream). Some of these
changes are only relevant for other operating systems, so the actual diff is
smaller.

So what is the first step for integration? To try to forward-port it for
current X.org?

Check whether the GLX_EXT_tfp is available with direct or indirect
rendering.

If it is only available with indirect rendering, export
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT
forcing compiz to use indirect rendering. This works around an issue with
libGL which currently doesn't list GLX_EXT_tfp as supported.

Using apt-get will ignore Recommends, and that is a bug in apt-get.

The reason the Recommends were changed is that on upgrades the Depends: on
xserver-xorg-video-all | xserver-xorg-video-1.0 were insufficient to pull in
xserver-xorg-video-all on upgrade in many cases. I don't know whether
adding in the -vesa is going to make a difference, but using packaging tools
that ignore recommends is... not recommended.
